I've just finished a novel that had a rather quirky take on the War of the Worlds, involving a quasi-fantasy setting with its own freewheeling spin on the scenario. A lot of details were different, but walking tripods with heat-rays figured prominently.
The novel itself dissolved into a hodgepodge of minor meh, but now I'm thinking half-seriously of running a War of the Worlds campaign, or at the very least designing tripods to wreak havoc in the Forgotten Realms. (Take that, you $%&#@!! angst-ridden drow!)
So, how to go about this? Presumably something like an amped-up Scorching Ray would do the trick for a heat weapon. What else?
