Oh, man, it just occurred to me. What if, instead of just terraforming, you could add in creatures! some simple creatures, with programmed AIs that follow some simple patterns. Like a terrarium full of little virtual critters, with a landscape you could control.

I don't know if the world is ready for this kind of technology yet. Most people don't take the term "sandbox game" literally.

Isn't that what Spore is?

But yeah, that would be kinda cool. The AIs would need to exhibit different behaviors, perhaps necessitating some kind of basic learning algorithm. Add in the concept of food and hunger, and an ecosystem can emerge.

Oooh, and you could use it for more than worldbuilding, too. Imagine a physics game where you have to guide a virtual ball to a goal using the terrain.
