hello playgrounders,

i like the ranger. i really do. it could be a great class in my opinion.. but i just hate the "favoured enemy" ability. it's just a boring pasive bonus that you get when the DM wants and not when you actually do stuff. and thats bad, because favoured enemy is pretty important ability in the ranger's arsenal.

is there anywhere an acf\variant\anything that replaces the favoured enemy with anything that isn't really smiliar ("favoured terrain")? i couldn't find anything, but my google-fu is kinda hurrible.

edit: homebrew is fine, as long as it's not broken or something.

this listing (http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75882/19872054/Alternative_Class_Features_III) says you can only trade favored enemy for different flavor of favored enemy (like arcanist or na organization).

Arcane Hunter ACF in Complete Mage: anything that casts arcane spells or invocations, which tends to be broad enough to be actually useful.

Otherwise... try Rival Organization from the Cityscape Web Enhancement (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/we/20070228a). Make your character paranoid, and start ranting about how there's a vast conspiracy of seemingly random monsters and humanoids that are trying to kill you and take your stuff for seemingly inexplicable reasons.

I wonder if you could take Rival Organization: NPCs? Because I have to be honest, all NPCs are a conspiracy designed to kill me and take my stuff, at least in the games I play.

There's a Barbarian ACF that let's you swap Rage and Indomitable Will for Favored Enemy and Combat Style. So of you have a lenient DM you could try working backwards and trading Favored Enemy for Rage.

Put the Rage in Ranger. :P

edit: There's also one for Paladin that only gets Favored enemy, and drops Lay on Hands, Turn Undead and Remove Disease. So you could also try that.
If you did that, I'd also suggest maybe swapping the Ranger's spells for the Paladin's; just take the Holy Ranger theme and run with it.
But again, lenient DM required.

There is the Guide archetype for Pathfinder.

Not 100% rules legal, but I handle it so that you can trade Favored Enemy with bonus feats or class features as seen in the Generic Classes feat section (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/genericClasses.htm#bonusFeats).
Of course, if you want those alternate class features, you must fulfill the requirements as written there.
So if you want your Ranger to have the 2d6 Sneak Attack instead of Favored Enemy, you ought to have 4 ranks in Move Silently and Hide.

Infiltrator synergizes favored enemy into a self-buff; Freebooter, Warden, and Wild Stalker swap out the favored enemy (Wild Stalker swaps it out for Rage, even,.)
