In my current, low-level campaign I'm playing a human paladin. He has an old goat (don't ask... :smalltongue: ) I would like to eventually turn into his special mount when he hits level 4. Supernatural events have happened without explanation in his life before, so letting a goat grow into large size should not be problem.

However, afaik there's no stats lying around for dire goats anywhere. So, what I'm asking is for you to either prove me wrong or suggest stats for such a beast. It should be comparable to a war horse in terms of power/abilities, of course.

(I have no particular build in mind, btw, so don't worry about making things that fit into anything specific).

Honestly? I'd just use the war horse stats and substitute a Gore attack for the hoof attacks. Maybe give it (Ex) Sure Footed in exchange for the "second" hoof attack it's losing. Sure Footed means it gets a racial +10 to Balance, Climb, and Jump checks.

Not a bad idea. I'm guessing Improved Bull Rush is a must too

There's also a pathfinder version (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/monster-listings/animals/herd-animals/goat/dire-goat-tohc). Shouldn't be hard to change it into 3.5.
It misses a bull rush attack, though. And is only medium.

Edit:
Also; "This giant goat stands as tall as a halfling at the shoulder.", isn't that, like, the size for a normal goat?

Start with a Brixashulty (Races of the Wild p. 186). There is no "Dire" template from WotC, but Necromancer Games did release one for their Tome of Horrors book:

http://www.necromancergames.com/pdf/ToHDire.pdf

If that's not "dire" enough, add Warbeast (MMII) and Mage-Bred (Eberron) if need be.

Are there stats for a normal goat for 3.5? I can't seem to find any.
In any case, Pathfinder has a dire template. It lists stats for a goat and dire goat too, but they are small/medium respectively meaning you couldn't ride them as a human.

OK, I don't have anything constructive to add, but let me just say that a dire goat paladin mount is just an epic idea.

reminded me of the Grand Stubborn Master, a hero character from the game Warlock: master of the arcane which A) never retreats, and b) rides a donkey.

normal "stubborn knight":

That link doesn't work anymore. I think this (http://www.talesofthefroggod.com/NG/pdf/ToHDire.pdf) is the same thing. It seems like Necromancer Games became this Frog God Games.

By the way, it seems like the template was updated for Pathfinder by the author. If can be found here (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/monster-listings/templates/dire-creature-cr-2-tohc).

And no, I can't think of a way of getting that large Dire Goat "by the rules" short of advancing a medium one. A pity. Gotta love those rams (http://portalwow.com.br/files/2011/04/Ironforge-Ram.jpg).

The bison says "the bison’s statistics can be used for almost any large herd animal." Dire goats probably fit the bill.

Thanks. It must be kind of hard for you all to believe that this is actually a pretty serious and tragic character.

It probably need a little downscaling, though. It's a bit tougher than a heavy war horse.

Thanks for all the suggestions, everybody
