I know I'm very late in the game to be asking questions like this, but does DDO have prestige classes the way we know them from 3.X?

Or is it closer to the 'advanced classes' used in SWtOR? (And 4E paragon classes)

edit:
If there are no prestige classes, how would you recommend playing a gish character?

For a gish, I would recommend a bard.

But, then, I always recommend a bard.

Have they really been up-powered that much?

Technically, there aren't prestige classes, there are just class options that give you the same things as prestige classes, by taking enhancements (http://ddowiki.com/page/Class_enhancements) that make you an Arcane Archer, Radiant Servant or whichever.

Good gish builds are just as complicated as they are in tabletop, but there's plenty of good ones. Right now, the single strongest gish (and one of the absolute most effective builds in the game) is The Juggernaut. (https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/404822-The-Juggernaut-Prime-of-the-Warforged?)

Like tabletop, making a good gish will take some research, but it's worth the effort.

Bards are pretty good, and are one of the easiest classes to make as a melee caster, since their Warchanter build is entirely based on that, anyway.

You know, I keep expecting this to be like playing Neverwinter Nights, just online. These enhancements seem the same as the 'advanced classes' in swtor (which is a good game), just feels weird, getting some star wars in my D&D.
As far as juggernaut:
Hmm, new player and a free one. I don't think I can do that Juggernaut build, I'm pretty sure that artificer and warforged are reserved for paying members. (In the middle of installing ddo right now)
