After many hours of search, you finally find the creature you’ve been hunting; it looks like a slightly oversize rabbit, its chest puffed out and large antlers on its head. Before you can do anything, you hear the voice of your companion behind you. You turn and find no one there, and when you look back at where the creature was it is nowhere to be found.
Jackalopes, also called Rasselbocks, are a rare breed of magical rabbit that can be found in the wide open plains. There, they mix with groups of their more mundane cousins, protecting them from predators in exchange for a place to rest. Due to both the fact that they look bizarre and the fact that they coinhabitate with normal rabbits, many just presume that they are not real.
Jackalopes are often hunted for their flesh, which is said to taste like fine lobster. Their milk also has useful medicinal properties (those making Heal checks to enable long term care gain a +2 circumstance bonus to the check for using a pint of jackalope milk), so there have been attempts in the past to domesticate them as farm animals. Their elusiveness and extreme aggression when cornered have made these attempts less than successful, however.
Travelers at night who walk through areas filled with wild jackrabbits often say that they can hear the creatures shouting out for them from the darkness. They overhear conversations and mimic the voices of people they have listened to in order to confuse and scare those that enter their territory.
Combat
Jackalopes usually try to trick their targets with their supernatural ability to throw their voices, though when discovered and unable to escape Jackalopes are shown to fight with a ferocity that is surprising for a creature of its size.
Mimicry (Ex): A jackalope can perfectly mimic familiar sounds, voices, and accents. This ability does not enable the jackalope to speak languages it can't normally speak (though it can mimic phrases it has heard). To duplicate a specific individual's voice, a jackalope makes a Bluff check; a listener familiar with the voice being imitated must succeed on an opposed Sense Motive check to discern that the voice isn't genuine.
Ventriloquism (Sp): A Jackalope can use Ventriloquism as an at-will spell-like ability. Caster Level 4th.
Skills: Jackalopes have a +4 racial bonus to Jump checks, and a +2 racial bonus to Hide and Move Silently checks.
