So I've been playing with these guys for a while and in our most recent sessions our party has been fallowed by a mysterious water creature whenever we're near the coastline. My character had died so I had decided to make one based around sailing and when I brought it up to the DM he thought it'd be a great idea to move the whole campaign in that direction, the only problem I can see is, is there a way to shift the characters who are still alive that were based on a land adventure to an aquatic one? I've read a lot of the stormwrack book and I might be stupid but I'm having trouble figuring out if my friends can keep their characters and not have too much trouble.

Well, honestly a lot of it is going to be fine as long as SOMEONE has the right skills. One guy can tell them how to run a ship, can navigate so you don't get lost, etc. Probably you.

The only real problems? Did they invest in Swim (Everyone should in my book, it's a hard lesson to learn)? Are they carrying like 500 lbs of gear at all times (They're going to go overboard, DMs always do it)? And do they have balance skill ranks (A lot of ship effects make you roll balance)?

If the answers to these are Yes? They should be fine. The only other stumbling blocks I could see are rare ones unlikely to be the case... like if your team is entirely Archery focused combat wise, or have a lot of Archers... they probably are going to have a bad time.

Aside from the points ArcturusV mentioned, the only other character type that might be affected negatively by an aquatic campaign is a mounted-specialist. Of course, if they can secure an aquatic or amphibious mount, no worries.
Certain weapons/tactics might be less effective in the water, but you should be fine for the most part.

A greater armor crystal of aquatic action costs a few thousand GP and grants unlimited water breathing, a swim speed, and freedom of movement as far as the water is concerned. This goes a long way in the direction of allowing water based adventures for a normally land locked character.

They DO need +3 armor though.
