Does anyone have any handy hints? I've got everything installed, just need to get busy working on it.

Except I have no clue how. How closely would the illustrator directions work?

I don't think many people here use GIMP in making avatars. The preferred programs seem to use vector graphics - the likes of Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape (which, like the GIMP, is free)

Ouch. I can go find inkscape then. Sodipodi and adobe won't download or install.

Read this (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8742&page=4#99) for Inkscape/GIMP info (avatar-specific). Good luck!

People generally use Inkscape to make the avatars, and gimp to make them gifs.

Using GIMP to do the what-now? When I used to upload as a GIF, I would just use Photoshop at school and "Save for Web". But now (because I'm using FireFox and IE 7) I'm too lazy to convert to GIF, so I just use transparent PNGs instead. Although I do use Inkscape to create my avatars.

It's weird. Gimp doesn't have a simple "circle" tool, and adobe didn't install. Inkscape does work fine and I'm working with it now, but it doesn't have a straightforward "Fill" tool. At least that I can find.

Select your line/circle and press ctrl-shift-f (that's the shortcut) which should open up a menu where you can set stroke style and fill etc
