Okay, we have a new comic.

Guys, we all love to be on the first page, second page, third page, and the like; because it means that we found the comic less than twenty minutes after it was posted.

However, it is not completely fair to post more than once in the first six pages; because you've already got your post in; you're already on one of the first pages, you've already shown that you're fast. If ten people got on right when the new comic was uploaded and spammed, nobody else would get to be on the first few pages.

It feels wonderful to find yourself on the fifth page of the new comic.

Please let this glory of being on the first few pages be based on speed and nothing else. Please Don't post more than once in the first six pages. Let other people have a shot at the prize.

Strange, when did you become a moderator?

I think you've misjudged most of us. Sometimes it comes down to commenting on the current comic and then realising something and speculating about current events. By Giant fiat there's no official glory in being first to respond, as you'll find in many internet forums.

Not sure what you're getting at. There are rules for not double posting immediately in succession. Also, there are rules for not celebrating making the first page, because there is nothing celebratory about it. So, there is no "glory" in early comments that you speak of.

There's no de jure glory in getting on the first few pages; but it just feels good. Also, you don't have to worry so much about whether or not your question was asked and answered on an earlier page.

I've noticed on many forums that people tend to read the first few pages of a discussion, skip to the end, and respond. So, if you post in the first five or six pages, you are a lot more likely to have a threadhopper respond to your question than if you are in page 23 of a 44 page thread. There's a definite advantage there.

While this may be true, your logic also means that someone who has already posted on the first few pages cannot answer the question of another poster or respond to the speculation of another poster who also posted on the first few pages without waiting for a substantial number of other posts to separate the portions of the infant discussion. That just seems unreasonable to me.

Besides, if you really have a question that you burningly want answered, you can always start a thread devoted to it.

Bear in mind that if you're on page 23 of a 44 page thread, when you posted on page 23, it was a 23 (or 22) page thread, making your post the most recent one.

There are already rules specifying that you can't "celebrate" your post with stuff like "FIRST!" or "First page!" or whatever without getting your entire post deleted. And there are already rules against double posting, and posting meaningless spam. Beyond that, there are no restrictions on posting in the Discussion Threads. In fact, we deliberately oppose any such restrictions as they will only serve to create perceived value in posting early, something we specifically want to discourage.

So, no, this isn't going to be a rule, and we don't even really want it to be a guideline either. The solution to the "problem" of not being able to post in the first few pages is, "Stop caring about posting in the first few pages."
