I acquired this game recently on Steam, and I gotta say...

There is something that I find fantastic about the game. The organic empire development, the ship design and battles, etc.. all of them are great. But.. but... but there is something that just ain't right. No idea what.

Something that annoys me. I have no idea what, like I said, but something prevents me from fully enjoying the game. Is it that some of the most interesting stuff on the tech tree is only attainable once the game reached endgame? Is it that the diplomacy is a strange mix of obscure, hectic and boring?

Why is this game at the same time so fun, yet bad?

Who knows? I've yet to survive meeting an enemy race, as they never fail to declare war in the next five minutes and wipe me out.

having just 20 fighters outfitted with 2-3 vulcan cannons makes the entire difference between being the newly abused kid on the block and part of the bullying gang.

I bought this game just before it's launch. It was....interesting. Lots of pretty good ideas just seemed to fumble around a bit too much. Though considering it was basically 1 guy working on it full time, its pretty impressive.

I remember the thing that killed me was that there were usually only a handful of actually decent worlds for colonization. So there were usually piles of crummy money sinks that if you didn't take the AI would and they would somehow make them manageable.

Biosphere allows you to build stuff on unusable tiles, and can store .1b population.

Terraforming (high-end tech) slowly unlocks tiles naturally and allow them to fully house population. I guess the AI does cheats a bit..

I agree, the game's problems are really minimal when you consider it's ONE guy doing it all. There is a lot, lot of good in there; and I do believe there is still miles of development potential to make it a much funnier experience.

I like to think I know what I'm doing, but the controls drive me crazy as well. I tell my fleet to move in, and the manual says they should auto attack, but they do nothing unless I individually target the enemy.

Of course, that's when they're not off 'escorting freighter' on their own initiative, even when I've directed them elsewhere.

Oh I knew about those, but then they would throw my economy off the rails. Plus a world's base stats, namely fertility and industry would hardly ever be of sufficient size to be a worthwhile colony, IMO.

I think this game has so much potential, just hope it gets the support it needs to grow into that potential.

I was one of the Kickstarter backers for StarDrive, but I'll admit I've not played it that much so far. Like Cikomyr, I think there's a lot to like, but it hasn't quite yet "clicked" with me.

As it is, I'm kinda waiting for Dan (the developer) to port the game over to the Unity engine. It sounds like we could see major improvements once that's done.

Don't quote me on this (it's been a while since I followed the game regularly), but I think that's one of the reasons he's porting it to the Unity engine.
