Just how good a choice is the thri-keen as it comes to choices for a player?

Depends what do you want to do, in general the non-psionic thri-kreen is better since it has a lower ECL (3 as opposed to 4).

Monstrous Humanoid HD aren't that bad for melee types, and I am sure there are ways you can abuse the +30 racial jump (dragoon type builds anyone?). They also benefit a lot from stuff like Sneak attack or Dragonfire inspiration (Seriously 5 attacks at ECL 3/4 can be quite scary).

On the higher optimization spectrum you can level drain one of your RHD and change the other for a class level.

Personally I like them very much, but I haven't had the option to use them.

as with any race with a +LA, allowing the LA buyoff from UA always makes any +LA race more viable.

Thrikreen can make good beatsticks, with their 4 arms and multiattack (TWF for creatures with 3+ arms) you can essentially attack with 2 greatswords

They make surprisingly effective Tiger Claw swordsages. Sudden Leap on a thri-kreen might as well be pounce.

I would say that they are great on a MWF build, but that essentially precludes a caster build.
