MERCENARY ESPIONAGE AND RECONNAISSANCE CORPORATION

The Mercenary Espionage and Reconnaissance Corporation is the most prominent faction of mercenaries and adventurers in this world. Their skills are offered for hire to anyone who can pay. More than that, the Corporation exerts considerable control over the teeming masses of the freelance mercenaries, adventurers, hired weapons and troubleshooters of the chaotic land of the Nexus. They offer licenses that entitle one to discounts, legal protection and job offers... in exchange for a cut of the profits. To that effect, MERC has offices in Inside, Riverside and Skyside. MERC does not appreciate competition, so unlicensed mercenaries operating in these cities are subject to a negative marketing campaign. If one proves troublesome, harsher steps may be taken.

Hiring MERC:
Hiring MERC is as simple as providing any information needed and negotiating appropriate payment. Contracts must gain the approval of a MERC member. If the member thinks the job is too risky, doesn't pay well enough or is otherwise troublesome, they may contact Dipsnig or one of his lieutenants for special approval.

There are two categories of official MERC contracts. MERC Member Contracts, jobs to be carried out exclusively by MERC members, and MERC Licensed Contracts, jobs to be posted publicly for any MERC license holders to complete.

The following for must be filled out. MERC Member Contracts are posted in an area exclusively viewable by MERC members, while MERC Licensed Contracts are posted in all MERC locations and are viewable by all license holders.

Job Description: Brief description of the job to be performed.
Contract Type: MERC Member Contract or MERC Licensed Contract.
Hired by: Character or group name (Player name).
Target: Character or group name (Player name).
Payment: Approximate or specific where applicable.
Notes: Any additional information.

Note that MERC refuses to deal with slavers, the organization AMEN, and they won't carry out assassinations.

Current Contracts:
MERC Member Contracts:

Payment: 1400 Nexus GP or specified equivalent (plus compensation for commission fee)
Notes: ((Feel free to make up a monster attack or invite an antagonistic character to interrupt, but I'll make something up to keep us on our toes otherwise. flopping to crush a target. It eats humanoids.

Every MERC member and license holder will get a commission for protecting Trog's Tavern and Black Dragon's Den from attacks, attempted robberies, random encounters and other events.

Completed contracts can be found here (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1bWaLexXM4Subtwpi99NCEd3qpiVjbAFUyitdCJQQw5Q/edit#heading=h.ka8gmtz84z5).

Licenses:
Those unwilling or unable to join MERC full-time can apply for their licenses. Obtaining one is relatively simple, requiring only coming to their main base or one of the offices and filing in their name. A license comes with the following benefits:
Discounts in Trog's Tavern, Black Dragon's Den, Erin's Emporium and Azik's Enchantments
Protection from dishonest employers.
Access to MERC Licensed Constracts.
Free medical care by MERC's lieutenant and medical robot, CB.

In exchange for the license, its holder is obliged to pay MERC a cut of their profits.

However, the license may be revoked if the holder breaks MERC's restrictions on jobs or glaringly breaches the organization's professional standards. The first time it happens, the license can be returned for a fee. The second time the fee is higher and the third time, the license is revoked permanently.

Membership Information:
In order to be hired as a full-time member of MERC, one needs to prove their worth either to their leader or one of his lieutenants. Usually, it involves being a mercenary of some skill and professional standards, but the organization is also open to those with other valuable skills, provided they can prove that they'd be useful to the group. Full-time MERC members enjoy the access to MERC-exclusive jobs, and a cut of the profits and influence their control over the mercenary business brings.

Locations:
This thread not only serves to contain the MERC base, but also all other MERC associated locations. These locations are separate from each other and events in one location will not affect the others. Because of this, please label posts appropriately for any scene's location.

MERC Base:
The base consists of several buildings located in the cold regions of the Nexus. It tends to snow a lot. It resembles an arctic base somewhat, but is much more friendly and hospitable.

Layout:

http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq40/happyturtle-avs/no-base2.png

One central building, containing the common room, the kitchen, the infirmary, the armoury and the tunnel entrance. Four smaller buildings connected to the main one by roofed corridors: One for sleeping quarters, one for the laboratories, one for the training area and one for storage. Also, there are considerably large beast pens also connected with the main building.

Main Room:
In need of description.

Room Descriptions:
In need of description.

Infirmary:
This room has come a long way from where it was. The circular room has been fitted with a number of high-tech hospital beds, and some healing tanks. The walls are lined with supplies, tools, medical apparatus, and many things that look very, very advanced. Everything short of surgery can be done in here. The tanks are on the far side of the circle from the door, five of them, currently empty. A sign is posted next to the tanks:

WARNING: HEALING TANKS ARE ONLY FOR EMERGENCIES. ONLY USE TANKS WITH DOCTOR RECOMMENDATION. ACTIVE TANKS MUST BE MONITORED BY A TRAINED PROFESSIONAL AT ALL TIMES.

Against the wall near the entrance are a number of stretchers. One spot in the right wall is a marked out section of blank wall. A note is attached:

“See about having a door put in here, for emergencies.” Oddly, on the other side of that wall is the armoury.

Almost missable in the calculated medical clutter are white curtains, which can be pulled upon tracks in the ceiling to give bedridden patients some peace. Sanitation stations (like modern hospital sinks, but even cleaner) are at the front and back of the room. Each station has spots for hand washing, instrument washing, general trash throw-out, and hazardous trash throw-out.

Yeah, the MERC infirmary is now prepared for anything short of surgery.

The surgery is done in the member’s quarters.

CB-484, not seeing the point in a large room for himself, has converted the bulk of his room into a fully-equipped futuristic emergency room and surgery centre. It has lots of adjustable lights, emergency supplies, pointy objects, things with large warning signs on them, and a sanitation station. One door off to the side is marked “CB-484 Only.” What was once the closet of the room has been deemed suitable to be CB’s living quarters, and he has no intention to expand.
Kitchen:
In need of description.

Labs:
In need of description.

There's an extensive cave and tunnel network is located under the base and the mountain behind it and some tunnels go forth to key Nexus locations. Both are accessed through the main building. There's a separate door for the complex and the tunnels.

Defences:

Secure walls and windows that can be locked if needed.
Six Aperture Science laser-targeting chain-gun turrets placed on the exterior of the base.
Two Asuran golems (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/d/d3/Chubby_Golem_model.jpg) programmed to obey MERC members and defend both the personnel and the base.
Clockwork penguins, armed with light machine guns. Crude and ineffective, but numerous.
Dimensional lock placed on the entire base.

Offices:
MERC has offices in Inside, Riverside, and Skyside, where mercenaries can come to receive licenses, inquire about job opportunities, make complaints about dishonest employers, and conduct other administrative business.

Common Building:
MERC has a building located in Inside to serve as a place for MERC members and MERC license holders alike to gather. Here they can plan and discuss jobs, network with fellow mercenaries, or simply socialize.

Description:
The common building is a large building in the suburbs of Inside, with two floors. The inside of the building is rather plain and simple, but solid. Not luxurious, but enough for a hard-working mercenary to rest. The rooms inside are as follows:

The job room - it contains a list of all available jobs, and this is also where potential employees can come looking for someone to solve their problems.
The bar - here, the mercenaries can eat and drink. It has a wide menu for a variety of species and tastes. Nexus being what it is, it makes no assumptions about 'standard adventurer fare'
Recreation area - a large room with card tables, a pool table and some couches, for the mercenaries to relax.
Pool - a bit more extravagant. One of the rooms opens up on the outside, and contains a swimming pool.
Training Area - a simple room for the mercenaries to train and spar.
Sleeping Rooms - upstairs, there's a number of rooms for the mercenaries to rest. They're small and rudimentary, only meant for those who for some reasons can't or won't rent rooms in Trog's.

OoC Rules:

No godmodding.
No destroying the whole place. No, not even then. This applies to all locations.
Keep the curtains to a reasonable amount.
Label posts for appropriate location. It's especially important here, seeing as there are multiple buildings in this thread.

"Stealth. Disintegration magic. Teleporting past. Fire, with all exits redirected via portals into space. Finding out exactly where we would be if we were on the surface, advancing fifty paces, and then digging our way back down," Krait states in a dull monotone, reciting a list of means by which they might deal with his adversary, more for his own psyche's benefit than for assisting with the task of dealing with this monstrosity. He warily jabs at it with his voulge, intending to just cut it a little and retreat. Have to make sure that it can even bleed before they experiment further.

[Entrance]

"We took all the necessary precautions to make sure Magtok didn't know who was capturing him and we signal-blocked the room we're holding him in to cut him off from the rest of the MagCollective," Dipsnig says, with no indication he's not saying the truth or being dishonest.

[Tunnels]

"Well, if it isn't the most disgusting thing I've ever seen in my life," Dipsnig says. "I'd just fill this whole tunnel with napalm if I didn't know the smoke would kill everything within a few kilometres. We need it gone, without any traces."

The rat Krait pokes splits down the middle from the slightest gash, its insides spilling out as a thick, chunky green paste that faintly glows in the tunnel's slight gloom. A still-living rat beneath it squirms and squeals as the liquid drips down over it, erupting into boils as the congealed sickness spreads over it and expedites its demise.

"You would prefer living with the knowledge that this sleeps beneath the floorboards of your bedchamber?"

A bit of an exaggeration there, Krait. Rilla's room is way over down that way, on the other side of NO. Besides, it's not like this awful thing could ever hope to squeeze its way free into the main base, right? Krait stabs the monstrosity again, even though his first strike didn't really accomplish much. Hey, if it's working, and nobody's suggesting anything better, why not?

"The voulge contains some magical enchantments. Fire, lightning, and more. I don't believe there's anything meant to help with the smell of giant spit-roasted demon vermin, however."

Outside NO => Main Door

Late in the evening, the deep roar of a powerful engine can be heard getting closer. If anyone investigates, they'll see a rapidly approaching glow of daylight accompanying it.

Finally, a little before a minute passes, the vehicle enters the area and slows to a stop, revealing a heavily armored man sitting on top of a simply gorgeous motorcycle (http://confederate.com/web/r135/r135/r135_files/r135_wraith_combat.jpg). The only differences are that this bike is flat white, and the front end looks like a female angel with her arms and wings outstretched to make the handlebars and legs as the frame and shock system.

The armored man that gets off of the bike is quite a sight himself. He wears a suit of power armor that appears almost like platemail except that all the edges are softened, excess material removed, and form-fitting. The suit is pure white except for a pale blue cross that starts at his neck and ends halfway down his abdomen. A cape of the same color unfurls from his shoulders once he's off the bike, and he takes a moment to equip himself.

He reaches into a container on the side of his steed and pulls out a pair of handles. He flicks his wrists, causing the items to expand to full size. The right one unfolds into a longsword covered in holy etchings and the left reveals itself to be a truly massive tower shield with the same blue cross on it. Both glow faintly, but the glowing stops when he sheathes the sword on his hip and puts the shield on his back.

His helm (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frog-mouth_helm), previously closed, slides open of it's own accord, folding away neatly into his gorget, revealing the man's face and drop-dead beautiful hair.

By the gods...the hair.

Long silky glistening golden locks spill down to his shoulder, framing the face of what has to be a model for propaganda posters. He has flawless tanned skin, bright blue eyes, a slight smile, and one hell of a jawline.

Overall, the man is a little over six feet tall with shoulders as broad as a barn, and a tapered body narrowing at the waist. His arms and legs are long and even under the power armor he appears strong. Not only that, but it appears he's always in sunlight as in a small radius around him, pure daylight shines. On him and the ground he walks on, but nothing else.

With a quick glance around, the Techno-Paladin smiles again, revealing perfect teeth as he steps up to the door and knocks. "I'm here for a license."

The door opens as soon as he knocks. Someone must have heard the motorcycle coming. In the doorway stands Dena who immediately wishes she wore something better than a grey long-sleeved sweater and a pair of black slacks.

She gives him a quick inspection, her eyebrow arching as she looks at his face. That was some fancy hair right there. Smiling back she gestures inside, more specifically at the already warmed up cozy armchair by the fireplace. "Of course, make yourself at home. I hope you didn't freeze on your way here. "They're obviously held together by magic," Dipsnig says. "One of the magic-draining explosive bolts might do the trick," he adds, loading said bolts into his crossbow.

The voulge strike causes more of the rats to burst, some like pustules and others simply coming apart like rancid meat, showing various stages of decomposition. Surprisingly, or perhaps not so surprisingly given the deadly virulence of the pile, no insect vermin appear to be present amongst or even near it. Whatever caused their mass death appears to be an effective insecticide as well.

If Dipsnig fires the magic-draining bolt, he'll find the results rather disappointing. The pile of rats was pushed together by sheer force, and is held there by a combination of friction and a rot that fused them into a solid mass of flesh.

However, on a harder to notice level the magic draining bolt would have an effect on the inherently magical nature of the afflictions the rats are spreading. With the energy pulled from the mass of viruses, germs and filth, it would stop its rampant, impossibly fast self-replication and become somewhat stable. Any stabs from then onwards wouldn't yield any more explosive rivers of putrefied flesh and bone.

I think I heard that in a fairy tale before, and the guy in the pictures looked just like you. So I suspect you must be some children's book come true. That happens in the nexus you know?" She states with a grin. Of course, Dena's thoughts probably aren't suited for anything children should read.

An announcement has been posted in all NO offices the common area, as well as the main base.

ATTENTION, EVERYONE:

NO has signed an exclusive security contract with Trog's Tavern and the Black Dragon's Den. The deal is as follows:

Every NO member or license holder will receive a commission for any heist, robbery or other attack they help to stop.
No negotiating the commission during an attempted attack.
Compensation for NO members who try to stop an attack that ultimately succeeds.
Participating in a robbery of either of the two places is now grounds for revoking the license.

He may find that difficult due to the jammer.

Kirk isn't the only one who might or might not have difficulty with jammers. A passing Magbot goes by, driving a big ol' semi-truck full of packaged limes. For whatever reason, the citrus fruit has always had a strange natural immunity to telewarping, and with the usual telewarp routes down while Magtok installs new telepads across the Nexus, he's had to resort to more conventional means of shipping for MagMart goods headed to Riverside.

The Magbot loses control of the wheel, and starts spasming wildly due to the effects of the jammer. The good news is, he doesn't hit anybody. The bad news? He hits a building, smashing a glass display and nearly demolishing a small local business opposite NO, as well as damaging the back of the truck, causing limes to go spilling out everywhere.

This book has been waterlogged, heated and abused to the point of making the pages rather brittle and warped, but it is still readable. It covers the three years, the questions he was asked, how he dealt with him. All of the troubles and achievements of the villagers. The Peacekeeper will find that the sphere does not, in fact, emanate from a robot. It's coming from under a manhole cover in the middle of the road.

On the horizon, a craft appears. It arrives very rapidly, and lands smoothly. Harald drops out of the pilot's seat.

"Units, synch please."

Seven holoscreens pop up around him. Each one has a video box and a lot of code streaming. He pulls up an eighth box and rewinds all of them to the time of the incident, examining each box in turn.

"Hmm. Interesting. Oh, to answer your earlier question, Peacekeeper, I equip all my robots with advanced shielding. There's not a jammer in the Nexus that can knock them out. Even the big ones will only cause a bit of a headache. Now, then... Mastermind, collate with nanobot and satellite data over the timeframe."

"Well, unless you have a cutter keyed to the atomic structure of this alloy - which you don't - it will take you a long time to get in. When you do, you'll activate the security measures unless you have the right signal broadcasting - which you don't - and even then the data will be useless unless you can break my encryption - which you can't - you don't have a chance. That makes sense. Well, I will wait in the Inn. I've heard that it attracts a seedier crowd than Trog's, so more trouble is likely to be caused. Of course, that might change if they know NO is providing extra security...

"Not necessarily. They were designed as single-use jammers, to be activated by a specific signal and then dropped in by air to disrupt electronics. Someone could easily have picked one up and replaced it with a fake, and I'd never know. They don't report back."

The Magbot's comments receive no response, but there are slight indications in his manner that he's taking notes of what's said.

Magtok, and by his extension, his minions, still seem a little bitter after that exchange in the MagCave. It's unlikely this was an attempt at sabotaging them, as MagTruck transportation routes aren't so easy to steal that such a thing would've gone unnoticed, but if there's a chance to twist the knife, they seem more than willing to take it.

Depending on how good any sensors trained on it are, they might notice a small swarm of nanites entering the portal by means of sitting on the truck. If they enter undetected, they'll stay on the truck until it reaches the MagCave and then attempt to spread out through it. If successful, they'll start collecting data, and one nanite will leave periodically to upload all the information to Harald.

If discovered, they all promptly disintegrate, leaving no recognizable remains nor any indication of who they came from (although Magtok will probably guess.)

Harald takes the jammer (after pulling on some rubber gloves to make sure no fingerprints get on it) and examine it closely.

"Let's see..."

He reaches into his left pocket, frowns, and, putting the jammer under his arm, grabs hold of the pocket and pulls it all the way up to his shoulder.

"There it is."

He pulls out a strange tool, which he presses a button on. The end glows gold and he slices the jammer open easily. A mess of circuitry spills out which he rapidly sorts through.

"This is the tracker... disabled, I notice, expertly done too... and here we have the power supply. Old model, a bit radioactive, so I'll get that out of here as fast as I can."

He pulls out a fist-sized orb that glows gently and tosses it behind him, where an arm extends from the bowels of his ship and catches it. The jammer is now disabled. He pulls another tool from his pocket and opens the tracker up, extracting a tiny chip, barely a tenth of a millimeter across, with a pair of ultra-fine tweezers.

There's a beep from a holoscreen that pops up next to him. He hits a couple of buttons and a full copy of the data arrives in the aforementioned Peacekeeper's phone.

"Anything else? I'd like to get back to my lab and see what I can get out of the data."

"Harald's a clown, and he managed to shoot his own marketing campaign down by himself very efficiently," Dipsnig says. "SHEOL looks like they've got their act together more than he does, but I don't think they're big enough to threaten us. If they do start getting bigger, I'll take steps."

[Dipsnig's Office]

"So what can you tell me about SHEOL and Harald? I'm afraid I haven't been able to keep up with the nexus as much as I have wanted lately and you seem to be the best person to ask."The sorceress asks.

"Harald is a man with a lot of technology and the mentality of an entitled teenager," Dipsnig says. "Such people seem common in the Nexus for some reason. I don't think it's worth the trouble to pay attention to him. SHEOL is a bit of a mystery. They seem to be in the problem-solving business just like we are, but operate differently. Still, there's nothing more weird about them than about a lot of enterprises around here. I may approach them to negotiate selling them our license."

"He seems to have made a reputation of himself, yes." Cessie replies diplomatically. "I can't say much about SHEOL though but the fact I'm here should tell you enough. But what about Magtok then? Last time I heard about him he promised to put out Watchtower out of commission."

"Magtok's being Magtok," Dipsnig says with a shrug. "He rants and raves a lot, but one can never tell whether or not anything will come as a result of that. He's probably still in cahoots with Vasquez, despite leaving the Council. I'd watch out for that."

Tunnels Under NO

Okay, so apparently it's my turn in this? Alright then, my bad. Krait stops everything he's doing, and grips one of the jawbones dangling from his polearm. It starts to glow ominously with magical energy, a faint blue filling the air around our favorite kobold.

"Commander and her goblin are advised to step back. No questions, takes too long to explain magicks involved. All will be clear in moment."

He takes a step to one side, leaving a curious sort of translucent afterimage where he was previously standing. Both him and the afterimage begin stabbing away at the abomination with their pointy polearms, attempting to clear away space for a third, fourth, and maybe even a fifth magical Krait afterimage to join in the rat-monster mutilating fun.

[Tunnels]

"We seem to be getting somewhere," Dipsnig says. "We still have a mass of rats to get through, but it seems they won't be spreading so much disease around when we do something with them."

Tunnels

The shimmering doopelgangers make short work of the initial layer of rats, chopping up the blockage into a slurry of corpses that litters the floor of the tunnel. If nothing else is attempted, this tactic will eventually break it up enough for the three to climb up over it and go onwards, but it could take as little as ten minutes or as long as a half an hour, depending on how many images Krait's magic can support, and how long it is until his arms tire from the repeated slashes and stabs. At least the mass doesn't offer any resistance no matter how deeply he cuts into it.

"I try to be weary with everything Magtok does. Not that Vasquez is much better in my opinion. She have a very special sense of justice." The sorceress replies while not going into too many details of her feelings about the commander. "But now that Magtok has left AMEN I'm not sure if that makes him more or less dangerous. At least with AMEN you had a pretty good sense of what they were trying to do. He's more subtle than that without AMEN members tying him down."

There's a story if I've ever heard one. I haven't gotten that close to any shapeshifters before, though I'll keep it in mind.

"Oh, yes, Vasquez is not to be trusted any further than we can throw her," Dipsnig says. "You heard her. She made it exceedingly clear how much contempt she holds us in and how expendable we are to her. What would she do if she had all the strength of the old Empire at her disposal, I wonder. Would she bother listening to anyone, or just grind us all under tank treads? Dipsnig muses. As for Magtok, he might have really become more dangerous now that he left AMEN. His relationship with that nuthouse has been on-again, off-again as far as I can remember, and he's been a member or leader of two other 'evil' organizations, which didn't last. He's always been most effective on his own, just with his lackeys. His ego makes him excel in such situations."

Due to a lack of other options, Dipsnig will wait until Krait has opened a passage through... this.

"At least we know someone is in there. I don't think it could have happened on its own."

"Yes, it really worries me of the condition of the nexus when persons like Magtok can control it to such a degree. But perhaps that's just the way here and I'm still ignorant about it's culture. Gods know I haven't exactly been ready to accept some of the customs around here." The sorceress freely admits.

"Oh it is. I'll tell you all about it... if you survive of course." Dena replies with a wide smile before Harvey leaves. I assume he pretty much gave her you character dictionary entry at the paper, sans the back story etc. right?

"That's the way it's always been," Dipsnig says. "The best we normal people can do is to make sure we can oppose them. At least Vyrn sees Magtok for what he is and doesn't share Vasquez's infatuation with him. I don't trust Vyrn one bit either, of course. But he's possible to work with."

Actually, after taking the paper and looking at it, you see the following:

Name: Harvey
Race: Tour de France
Profession:al

"At least we know someone is in there. I don't think it could have happened on its own."

"Someone was here," Krait corrects, advancing down the passage where the rat abomination was, covered head to toe in all sorts of awful bodily fluids from the beast. "Rat-Man could be somewhere else now. Could be dead, even. Better dead, probably."

"More like Vyrn and you share interests rather than he would be much better than Magtok. Vyrn just use a different way to amass power. But on the subject of amoral power mongers, are you familiar with Jezebel?" The sorceress asks.
