Team Fortress 2 disc space?

So I have about 20 gigs of memory on my pc at the moment and thought about downloading TF2. But when I did so, within the first 3% of installation, it had taken up 18 gigs of disc space. I tried to find the amount of space allocated to this game and came up with somewhere between 6 and 8 gigs. Any idea why this happened?

Mine takes 12.4-ish GB, but it also has a collection of custom sounds and maps from servers...

It probably ballooned up to that size as a precaution, to prevent you from allocating other data to that space while it was in the process of installing.
