But... What will happen to Jillian now? She's so hat-less and soft...

And was that breath attack "OMGWTFBBQ!", or was it the Orlies?

I laughed out loud for the first (Erfworld) time with this one. The 'OMGWTFBBQ' and the 'PWNED' in the background were great.

Ouch. Taking on five dwagons doesn't seem very smart.

After taking a closer look, I actually feel sorry for Jillian's victim in panel three. That's quite a pained expression for such a cute creature.

What are the odds of Wanda performing the summoning spell directly below the battle in the sky?

Edit:

And was that breath attack "OMGWTFBBQ!", or was it the Orlies?
I'm fairly sure it was the Orlies. The dwagons don't seem to rely on memes to attack.

Great Action art, Jamie. I am going to use OMGWTFBBQ now.

I think Wanda will cast the spell with Jillian in the room, and we will see Jillian move accross the room

Just registered and missed the boat with this one but i wanted to say that i really do not like the erfworld comics. The language seems aimed and children (that is not implying that onlly children like the comic) the art although good is confusing and the story so far seems boring.
No where near as entertaining as OOTS
Just my thoughts

Actually, looking at the last panel again, is that Jillian being carried away by the red dwagon? I assumed that she had fallen.

Khantalas
2006-12-28, 02:18 PM
Language aimed at children? They would call our dwagons "dragons", gobwins "goblins", croakamancers "necromancers", orlies "owls" and all kinds of weird stuff.

Really now, why would it be aimed at children?

i liked it a lot. good to see the dwagons in action. im kinda scared for jillian though. although........ if a post on another thread is right, and jillian is the new leader for lord stanley, this may be how they get her. which means that wanda already cast the spell. hmmmm.

See, now these two jokes (OMGWTFBBQ and PWNED!) are well-executed and funny. Made me chuckle.

Wish these updates could be a little longer/more frequent though.. the pace is so slow. But I guess with this level of art that's just not possible.

Mauril Everleaf

personally, and im sure im wrong, i took it to refer to the fact that they were about to get roasted or "barbequed". it works and keeps the funny, although im sure there is a meme for that.

also, this is just about as long as the first batch of oots. but i too wish it would hurry up and get here. as soon as im done, i want the next one. but thats the way i am with all comics. so, eh...

What's BBQ mean, anyway?

You're serious? Barbeque. I figured by the time a well-known worldwide fast food chain started naming their burgers bbq after it (at least they did so in holland), everyone would be in the know.

Also, here's rooting for "OMGWTFBBQ" T-shirts. I want one.

Khantalas
2006-12-28, 02:52 PM
Ah, but keep in mind that I live in a country with no barbecue culture whatsoever.

We also call them grills (actually, we don't, cause nobody actually speaks English in daily life).

Mauril Everleaf
2006-12-28, 02:59 PM
thats understandable, khan. it is a common abbreviation in america and on many american exports (like a lot of fast food chains). we also call them grills in america, although that usually refers to the cooking apparatus only, while bbq refers to the food, process of cooking and the event ("we are going to a barbeque").

silent_watcher
2006-12-28, 03:34 PM
"OMGWTFBBQ" is a common internet joke mocking the many abbreviations in internet lingo (OMG, WTF, ROFL, LOL, etc). I read it a lot in internet games. In case you didn't know, it means "Oh My God - What The <expletive> - Barbeque."

Barbeque (or barbecue, or bar-b-q) has a rich and full background that few people care about, but there's a technical difference between barbeque and grilling. The latter is more common, where you stick meat on a metal grill and turn up the heat. Barbeque is a slow cooking by drawing heat from smoke. It's common to call it "smoking."

Back on topic. I think Om is right. I didn't notice it before, but the red dwagon has something in its mouth in the last panel. It looks like a human, with yellow hair, probably Jillian.

Aelahn
2006-12-28, 03:41 PM
Personally, I thought the "OMGWTFBBQ!" and "PWNED" were sound effects of the dwagons rather than the Orlies. Frankly, I think "OMGWTFBBQ!" is a much better sound for a breath weapon than something like "FROOSH!" or something. It's really the sound effects and background things that make this comic for me.

Aww, man, poor Jillian. Although this was foreshadowed back on page 8 ("Except for dwagons").

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that Jillian is not going to be Stanley's new warlord. While that would be kinda funny, Jill is clearly on Ansom's team and I don't think Erfworld is going to go the brainwash direction. Also, Jill has backup coming; I think she's going to be rescued.

Judging by the way the flames wrap around the OMGWTFBBQ, I don't think "about to" is appropriate. I'm thinking that was the best death cry ever.

Sending six orlies against four dwagons? If that's anything like six owls against four dragons, Jillian is sizing up to be pretty heartless. Thus I love her. I can't wit to see the inevitable dramatic picture of her haggard after a long battle and covered in marshmallow, cotton stuffing, and other cutesy innards. I feel like she will siongle-handedly make sure this comic can't ever really be "for kids".

Did you leave out your </scarcasm> tag? Because if your serious thats more than slightly... odd.

Regardless, a quick breakdown:

LOL = Laugh out Loud
OMG = Oh my God
WTF = What the <censored>
PWNED = Owned
BBQ = Barbeque
O RLY? = Oh Really?
YA RLY! = Yeah Really!
Etc...

Yes, they're called "acronyms" where each letter of the "word" actually stands for another word. Laser and scuba are both examples of acronyms that have turned into everyday words.

Orlies seem to communicate solely in internet meme acronyms, with "O RLY?" being their primary voice and others like "YA RLY", "pwned" "OMG" etc. showing up when appropriate (Note that pwned isn't actually an acronym, more of a typo that became popular).

They're probably much smarter than a real-life owl to know when a phrase is appropriate and be able to follow complex orders.

edit: darn, I got ninja'd. such is life.

I'm glad to see people showing some love for the 1337-speaking Orlys. There's a surprising lot of depth and texture to this comic, if only some of the haters would step back a moment to try to see it.

Incidentally, I also laughed at the beheading of the Gwiffon/Peep, since it is a universal law of food consumption conduct that when eating a Peep, you must first behead it in one bite. I'm not actually sure what happens if you *don't* eat a Peep headfirst; I don't think it's ever been done before. I presume you open a gateway to Hell, or possibly you get flushed from the Matrix.

In any event, maybe we'll see roflcopters and lollerskates in the near future as Orly enhancements. Yarly! :smallwink:

This Gwiffon of Jillian's... Well, the one that was hers until it got eated by da dwagon (Sowwy, the cutesy voice is catching), is that it's big open mouth we see in the strip? And the one earlier when it's attacking the twoll? It just doesn't look right in my mind, kinda like how I first thought Stanley had really big lips when he was getting fired up at Wanda in page 5 or 6 of the comic...

If so, that's a darned big scary-lookin' mouth for such a cute bath-sponge-shaped bird to have. Youch.

I figured a slightly different take on golems... Given that the storyette I'm working on at the moment includes Jack Frost as a main character, the snow golems could be his personal army/bodyguard/servants/whatever. Otherwise, they might be something like a natural phenomenon, formed when heavy snowfall sits long enough in one place, reflecting the anima of its surroundings... or something, anyway. The natural phenomenon defeats the term "golem" as an artificially constructed, well, construct, but given it's an idea that came up all of 50 minutes ago, it's still a concept in progress, right?

Magical hats! How did I not think of that before!? Well, that pretty much takes care of snow golems for me - they're official as of now.

Also, for Mister Everleaf, it's not actually a game/campaign, as such. I've never played D&D in my life, what I'm making is just good ol' fashioned creative writing.

Hmm... Maybe Frosty can be the general of Frost's snow golem army. It makes sense, in a way... Well, if you twist things the way I'm twisting them.

Back in the olden days, when the Elders (figures that would one day become Santa, Jack Frost, the Tooth Fairy etc) were much more apparent and active on Earth, Frost was the physical incarnation of winter, ice, and all things cold. But no matter how powerful, one entity can't manage half a planet's worth of winter all by himself, so he invests an amount of intelligence and power in the snow itself, allowing it to spread and do all the nasty things that winter is supposed to do. So snow golems, as they came to be known, are pretty sinister - killing young lambs born late in the season, covering trees, freezing rivers and pipelines...

And humans, as humans are wont to do, try to placate the spirit of winter by forming snow into the image of the golems, in a kind of hopeless attempt to keep the real ones at bay. (Oh, the golems are supposed to think, there's already a snow-man here... Maybe I'll try another town instead). All that changed over time was that Jack Frost slowly lost some of his influence in the world, and the living snow golems died out. Not that that stops people from reenacting the various traditions of winter; after all, we celebrate Halloween (At least in America and some countries) and Christmas.

I like how the story develops. I also have this meta-world-theory about Erfworld (I don't think I'm only one with these thoughts). I've allready posted this elsewhere but I've done some more lunatic thinking:

Yes, this is turn based strategy game and yes, it's played by punch of kids. It's either homebrew strategy based on many computer and tabletop startegies or some (fictional)comercial one.

They have metafysical crazy rules how universe works but they don't see them being any crazy. It's like meta-ethics in D&D - OotS characters can't really understand ethical questions outside lawfull-chaotic-good-evil axel. In Erfworld turns are like day and night. You know about how far you can ride till dusk comes. Better example could be people in internet from different time zones. If they live in same latitude they get their night at same time of clock still they are active at different moments.

Unlike OotS characters in Erfworld don't know that they're in game. They don't make intentional jokes about rules or talk them over and over. They just talk about them as if they were common knowledge.

If I get the type of game they're plaing right.. then only leaders of tribes are what you could call PCs. Those other people are only heroes or commanders - NPCs. Therefore tribeleaders act like kids and their commanders/-mancers are real people birn in (or birn off) Erfworld without meta-chlidis-ties outside Erfworld.

I think Ansom is like dream alterego of some teenager strategy geek (how isn't popular among girls IRL). Stanleys player would be younger than Ansoms. He likes to have towns and troops and Money. But he's more shoot-them-up than strategy type of player (in compgame terms).

i'm also convinced that this is a tabletop game (there's elements of comp and play-by-mail strategies also) because they use miniatures (frex goblinoids and skeletons) but can't affor to buy enough for large campains. That's why they use their childhood toys along with fantasy miniatures. Gwiffon looks like chicken or some kind of other bird rather than griffin (or candies but I didn't get that cause I'm not from states). Cloth golems and glass made unicorns also fit that description.

I also wonder if Power Ranger coloured Dwagons are really Power Rangers. Power Rangers and Dragons are both quite powerfull in minds of kids. Dragon miniatures aren't cheap and they seem to have many Dwagons.

I apologise overthinking

Side point, but I've never been 100% convinced that the Erfworld or OotS characters are really players playing characters - DM of the Rings (for instance) has characters who behave like players. Have you ever known roleplayers who'd soliloquize at length and in character when noone else is around (as OotS characters do)? How many players wrestle with internal voices like Hayley does rather than just deciding in five seconds what their character would 'probably do' and then getting on with it?

If I get the type of game they're playing right.. then only leaders of tribes are what you could call PCs.

Hmmmm... Stanley doesn't really talk like any sort of child though. If anything he sounds like a cynical but not particularly bright adult. And Stanley actually takes Wanda's advice, at least on not promoting any more pretty boys, which isn't the sort of thing that I can imagine happening in any sensible way in a strategy game.

I tend to think (in both cases) that the world is a real world with real people in it, but it's a real world that follows the rules of a game rather than the rules that we normally expect. If that makes any sense. So for OotS characters, the AD&D rules are just like the laws of physics. I have trouble visualizing either comic as being a bunch of people sat round a table acting out the whole thing...

i'm also convinced that this is a tabletop game (there's elements of comp and play-by-mail strategies also) because they use miniatures (frex goblinoids and skeletons) but can't affor to buy enough for large campains. That's why they use their childhood toys along with fantasy miniatures. Gwiffon looks like chicken or some kind of other bird rather than griffin (or candies but I didn't get that cause I'm not from states). Cloth golems and glass made unicorns also fit that description.
I like that idea though.

Sending six orlies against four dwagons? If that's anything like six owls against four dragons, Jillian is sizing up to be pretty heartless.
True, that. Actually, Jillian reminds me of a lot of Counter-Strike (or Quake / Unreal Tournament / whatever deathmatch shooting game) players: No matter what it costs her team, she has to score that big kill. :smallmad:
She made the classic turn-based strategy mistake, though: Send your scouts too deep into enemy territory and they're bound to run into something they can't handle.

i kinda want to know what would happen if a dwagon toasted a gwiffon with its fire breath. do you get a roasted campfire marshmellow? and do they then become good eating?

All I'm saying is that a few toasted Gwiffons, and maybe a Fudge Golem and a graham cracker creature of some sort would be all we'd need for some seriously tasty times. :smalltongue:

Hmm...1334 speak. Maybe if I've never read a joke on the internet anywhere. Maybe.

I don't know why everyone finds it so funny.

It's like the author saying "Hey kiddies, 1334 Speak! That's cool right?"

It's funny because of the way he's using it. Go read the "A note to the author" thread if you want a real explanation. And, I know this isn't going to help my case, but it's "1337" not "1334".

Hm...if you ask me, OMGWTFBBQ is definately the Orlie's exclamation of pain. Seeing how vocal they are in panel ten while in a combat situation, it just seems to fit. Also...it would seem too trite if the Dwagons also happened to speak in 1337. Just...not as funny.

I don't see how anyone can be confused, but for all you clueless people - just look at the font. Creatures have different fonts for their sound effects. All the leetspeak is coming from the orlies, and is shown in orlie font. Note how all the dragons effects use the same font - the CHUFF and SNORT, the OOARRR and CLAW and the GMFFFF. Same font, everywhere.

I want cloth golems! Too bad it's Balder's idea now, so I guess technically really I sorta kinda can't shouldn't use the concept in my own work...
It depends on how broad the concept is and how many details are similar. For instance, the fact that other people had written about the idea "a journey to the moon" didn't stop Jules Verne et al.

That's my take -- I noted on another thread that Stanley reminds me of Dilbert's boss.

Actually, looking at the last panel again, is that Jillian being carried away by the red dwagon? I assumed that she had fallen.

Yeah, I think that's the case.

And yes, the orlies' reactions to their own demise is great. :-)

As for the idea that Summon Perfect Warlord will produce Jillian, I doubt it. Taking advantage of opportune targets is one thing, but thinking you can take on five dwagons with a gwiffon, a few orlies, and a big sword doesn't sound terribly smart. She's clearly a great warrior (she did slay one of the dwagons after all), but as a tactician and a strategist, she leaves a lot to be desired).

Of course, the spell could fail altogether because Wanda is the wrong class, the dwagon, coincidentally, happens to drop Jillian into Stanley's throne room at that exact moment, so who knows....

Steve MB: I figured that my Cloth Golems would be pretty sinister, something like horror-style mummies without anything beneath the wrappings. Then again, my Snow Golems are pretty evil, as I've defined them.
