Going through my 3.5 spell book, I was wondering about a trick that seems cool. Are you able to get a flying carpet(10x10), cast wall of fire on the edges of it, and ride said flaming carpet through hordes of baddies? If so, this seems like a terribly efficient way of traveling in contested areas.

"Oh hey, there are some guys coming towards us! Let's kill them and loot them!"

"OH S***! Is that a flying wall of fire?!"

And the bandits die.

1) I don't think wall of fire can be linked to an object, but only to a spot in space.

2) Wouldn't this cause the carpet to catch fire? Even if it gets repeated saving throws, it's going to take the damage eventually.

But what is the reference point for that spot in space? (http://1d4chan.org/wiki/CLANG)

lol, i never considered that option with an Immovable Rod.

As for the OP, if the carpet takes damage (i dont know how much it needs to take exactly) it will loose its magical properties.

I had considered that option, until you see that after only like 1000-2000 lbs of pressure the rod falls.
