I'm helping design a new zone for Rex Rocket, a military barracks, and I'm looking for ideas for new and awesome enemies. This zone's theme is geared towards battle, whereas the previous zone was more about platforming. I have a design order to make more small, simple enemies that pack a punch.

With that in mind, I thought I might ask you guys what your favorite enemies have been in various run-and-gun games, like Mega Man, Metal Slug, Gunstar Heroes, and other such shooter games. Rather than bosses, I'm thinking about your run-of-the-mill level enemies.

The themes of this zone are "fortification" and "battle". So far, we've made a lot of enemies similar to those in the Metal Slug games-- guys who hide behind shields, soldiers who fire from cover and throw grenades, things like that.

Hmm, I think the Sniper Joe line (http://megaman.wikia.com/wiki/Sniper_Joe) of enemies would be a good inspiration, given the theme. However, the Mega Man Sniper Joes don't really act like snipers, so maybe you can do something with that. Sniper Joes can also pilot various vehicles, such as mechas, helicopters, jetskis, turrets, etc.

I know it isn't a single badguy, per se, but I love how themed badguys can be. For example, each badguy in Megaman had the same 'assembled' look about them that really captivated me.

As for favorite badguys, Strider for Genesis had a number of good ones.

I'm thinking of a Captain Falcon type.

Powerful, limited attack that is relatively heavily telegraphed. Not dangerous on its own, but becomes much more challenging when other factors would distract you or pull your concentration away.

Thanks for your thoughts, I'm working on this today and I'll let you know what I come up with.

I built some motorcycle enemies that sort of drive back and forth shooting diagonal bullets.

Maidro-Bot
The player first discovers these in a joke room, the cleaning closet of the ship. LAUREN makes a sarcastic comment about how every robot is essential in her battle to stop you. Later and rarely, cleaning bots may be mixed into normal enemy fights.

The Maidro-Bots attack Rex with cleaning fluid while shouting EXFOLIATE, EXPURGATE, EDULCORATE and similar. The cleaning fluid freezes Rex after a few shots, and then the Maidro-Bots switch from firing cleaning fluid to feather-dusting Rex. Maidro-Bots are completely harmless on their own, but combined with other enemies they can immobilize Rex and make him an easy target.

And now we also have Deathsketballs. I guess today is a day for silly.
