Housecats are available as a standard choice from the Familiar list.

For Campaign Setting reasons, I want to know if there are any kinds of cats that be taken as familiars that have by any method the ability to fly. My DM said to check the monster handbooks but I don't have any of those so I'm a little in the dark.

Edit: I'd like to avoid the Fly Spell/Scroll method if possible.

You could ask your DM if he'd let Improved Familiar allow you to get a cat with the Half-Celestial, Half-Fiend, or Half-Dragon template.

Not quite what you're looking for, but at level 1 of Fleshwarper (Lords of Madness), your familiar gains an aberrant ability, of which one of the best is wings. (Flying monkeys are traditional, but you can do flying cats just as well.)

Flying cat familiar?

I would either homebrew one or refluff something like a pseudodragon or pixie.

Tressym, from the Player's Guide to Faerun. They're... winged cats. Available via Improved Familiar at level 5.

What you're looking for is called a "tressym". They're cats with wings, originally published in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting. They were updated to 3.5 in the Players Guide to Faerun and in Lost Empires of Faerun (switching types from animal to magical beasts). They are available as an Improved Familiar for a 5th level caster, but according to Sandstorm they can also be chosen as an animal companion (which is kind of bizarre for a class feature that typically doesn't allow magical beasts or anything with an Int above 2).

So. Take the ACF that allows you to swap your familiar with an animal companion, and you can get a tressym via Sandstorm that can speak languages, level up, takes feats, etc.

Yeah that pretty much fits the bill. I'm talking to my DM right now, thanks for the help everyone!

You can also just image search it :smalltongue:

But yeah I had no idea these things existed. Way better than my suggestion. Yay splatbooks!

Cat + Unseelie Fey Template (+0 LA)

"Unseelie fey" is a template that can be added to any living creature type

How would you get that on a familiar?

Wow that's clever. Save a feat and get it 4 levels early! I'm totally doing this at some point.

Yep, tressyms in 3.5, silvanshee in Pathfinder.
