Voting in this round has closed! The next round of voting will be here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=308178)!
In this tournament, quotes which won nominations here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=302659) and here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=303560) will compete to determine the all-time* favorite OOTS quote as chosen by you, the fans!

*Well, all-time until someone else decides to redo this tournament a while on down the road.

RULES:

1. In each thread, I will post four matchups. You may vote for ONE quote in EACH matchup. Later threads will have fewer matchups as the tournament nears its conclusion.

2. If your quote loses, never fear! This is a double elimination tournament. A quote's first loss will move it to a losers' bracket, where if it beats the other quotes there it may eventually move on up as far as third place.

3. Voting for this round will conclude at 9PM EDT, on Wednesday, October 9th. I will generally give a week for all rounds, unless it becomes clear that no one is voting for the last few days.

The round number is just that. The lowercase letter indicates what part of the round it is. The (W) or (L) indicates whether the round is for the winners' or losers' bracket. I may drop that distinction later on and run both in one thread.

So, without further ado, here are the matchups:

17. :thog: prison changed thog quickly. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0387.html)

vs.

18. :vaarsuvius: Now if you don't mind, I am somewhat preoccupied telling the law of physics to shut up and sit down (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0107.html)

19. :vaarsuvius: "Disintegrate. Gust of wind. Now can we PLEASE resume saving the world?" (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0595.html)

vs.

20. :belkar: "Solve a man's problems with violence, help him for a day. Teach a man to solve his problems with violence, help him for a lifetime!" (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0612.html)

21. http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i294/trytoguess/O-Chul.png "And you find the idea that I have some sort of secret knowledge implanted in my brain by the elders of the Sapphire Guard that has been so deeply supressed that no magical effect can unearth it to be SIMPLER... ...than the idea that I just don't know anything?" (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0546.html)

vs.

22. http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g68/Cats_Are_Aliens/Banners/SoonKim.png "Ghost-martyrs of the Sapphire Guard... ATTACK!" (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0449.html)

23. :redcloak: "Because let's be clear: [...] There can be only one rational response to that." (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0830.html)

vs.

24. :roy: "If someone has to die for this, though, I choose me. Actually, I choose him, but if that's not an option, better me than someone else." (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0798.html)

And let the voting begin!

I especially like Roy's quote (I nominated it!) because it really highlights how heroic he is, and I think those qualities aren't given as much recognition on the forums as a lot of other topics focusing on character virtues/abilities.

Or, for easier readability: 17, 20, 22, 24

(This one was difficult. Soon's line was a truly epic - no pun intended - and spine-tingling one, but it has to go to O-Chul explaining Occam's Razor.)

18. :vaarsuvius: Now if you don't mind, I am somewhat preoccupied telling the law of physics to shut up and sit down (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0107.html) - It's funnier.

19. :vaarsuvius: "Disintegrate. Gust of wind. Now can we PLEASE resume saving the world?" (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0595.html) - It shows us insight into V's character at that point in time, and it's still funny while doing that.

21. http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i294/trytoguess/O-Chul.png "And you find the idea that I have some sort of secret knowledge implanted in my brain by the elders of the Sapphire Guard that has been so deeply supressed that no magical effect can unearth it to be SIMPLER... ...than the idea that I just don't know anything?" (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0546.html) - This one was kind of tough, but I enjoyed their battle of wits too much not to vote for it. Still, the other quote is really good, and I wouldn't mind too much if it made it into top 5.

23. :redcloak: "Because let's be clear: [...] There can be only one rational response to that." (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0830.html)- If we include the other parts of this quote, then yeah... I really enjoyed this strip, it showed us that Redcloak still has some sort of idea what he's doing.

Why are people abstaining? The point of a vote like this is to get the better quotes through to the next round, and surely, even if you don't particularly like either of the quotes, one of them appeals to you more than the other? It's not like *neither* will go through if you don't vote, after all.

When you like both quotes too much, you don't want to hurt either of their chances. Curaced was the only abstainee to express apathy towards any of the quotes. In either case, it seems fairer to leave the decision to people with more developed preferences.

It seems to me that we need to make the distinction between a great quote, and something somebody says that makes a great moment occur. I am more concerned with whether the quote is itself great.

Two great moments; two great quotes. 17 is a funny flip comment. But 18 is the superior quote.

Without all the story behind it, 19 isn't much of a quote (although it's one of my favorite moments in the strip). 20 is, all by itself, a great quote.

21. http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i294/trytoguess/O-Chul.png "And you find the idea that I have some sort of secret knowledge implanted in my brain by the elders of the Sapphire Guard that has been so deeply supressed that no magical effect can unearth it to be SIMPLER... ...than the idea that I just don't know anything?" (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0546.html)

vs.

22. http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g68/Cats_Are_Aliens/Banners/SoonKim.png "Ghost-martyrs of the Sapphire Guard... ATTACK!" (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0449.html)

22 is an unimpressive quote, from a spectacular moment. 21 is a great quote.

Who cares? these were great moments, but neither quote was important enough for you to even bother quoting them.
