View Full Version : What would be a good class to mimic Berserker from F0?

I am looking for a class that would emulate the abilities associated with the berserker from Fate/Zero (F0). The most noteworthy and impressive ability within his arsenal would be the noble phantasm known as "A Knight's Honour," a power that allows the berserker to use any item as a type of weapon, assume that he as trained with it all his life, and then gives it a level of magickal properties. A toughness and durability necessary to suvive within combat also seems appropriate, as well as some magickal talents or what-have-you to stand toe-to-toe with more powerful entities at higher levels. Homebrew is of course acceptable, even appreciated.

Oblig. Servant Soul (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=299771).

Failing that, I'd probably build Berserker as a barbarian/Frenzied Berserker/Kensai for Arondight. If I really, really wanted to focus on Knight of Honor and didn't want to use homebrew... your choices come down to building off Drunken Master (improvised weapon buffs) or Warblade (weapon feat retraining on the fly), or a combination of the two. Potentially throw in a dip of Master of Masks for exotic weapon proficiency.

@ Vin: I suppose that would work, but I'm looking for something a little closer to home. Thank you though.
@ Bekeleven: Thanks a bunch. I'll definitely check this out. Just what I'm looking for.

I like what I'm seeing so far. I'm definitely open to homebrew, and as for the class, I'd just be a bit less focused on the berserking aspect of the class. I'm mostly interested in the "knight's honour" ability, I think.

Not exactly what you asked for, but there's always the Psychic Warrior's Soulbound Weapon ACF. It's sort of like taking out the middle man of improvised weapons. Short version, It lets you summon a specific weapon using the Call Weaponry power. Then, with augmentation, you can customize it every time you summon it with whatever enhancements you want.

For the "pick up any weapon and master it" angle, the Warblade's Weapon Aptitude seems fitting.

People seem to keep suggesting Warblade and Swordsage and I'm not sure those actually work well.

Something based on Tome of Battle might be the way to go, but all of the vanilla classes really seem to benefit/require you to use a real weapon or your fists. Especially if you want enchantments. At best most of his utility would be coming from the techniques he uses, not his use of an improvised or non-improvised weapon. At worst he's swinging around a bit of scenery that does sub-par damage and actually causes him to take penalties to his attack. I definitely don't think he'd be able to pull something like the first gif on the Knight of Honor page where Lancelot hits (sheathed)excalibur with a lamppost and the lamppost doesn't just disintegrate.

Is there anything like the Psychic Warrior's Soulbound Weapon ACF or a Soulknife fix that lets you bind properties to held objects, rather than summoning them wholesale?

Disclaimer: I'm the DM, so I can OK stuff and all of that (I'll definitely be using the Servant Soul for my own ends, so thanks for that).

I can't remember where (I know, near useless...) but there's a feat that emulates the improvised weapon ability of the drunken master. It's something like "pick up any weapon" or "never without a weapon." It does damage from 1d4-1d8 if I remember correctly, and that would cover about a third of what Geryv is looking for.

edit: Pathfinder has a feat called "Catch Off Guard" that does this, although I'm sure I've seen a feat from 3.5 official material.

I think it's Pathfinder only, but that sounds like the Catch Off Guard (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/combat-feats/throw-anything-combat---final) and Throw Anything (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/combat-feats/throw-anything-combat---final) feats.

This is a pathfinder game with 3.5 and approved homebrew allowed.

This sounds like exactly what you're looking for.

That is definitely a cool class (and possibly one I'll be employing later), but it seems like it's entire shtick is creating the things they use, not just picking up what's on hand.

Edit: That said, given the nature of their fluff, you could probably change it so the class changes the substance of things rather than creates objects wholesale.

Paladin of tyranny (half-orc sub levelsRoD) 3+/Monk 2/Drunken Master 1+
Feats: Ascetic Knight, Deflect Arrows, Willing Deformity, Deformity (madness)EE, anything that grants UMD as a class skill

That gets you improvised weapons, immunity to mind-affecting effects, plus a frenzy that doesn't restrict your actions.
