The Fortnight

This is meant to be a standalone short adventure set in A World Too Small for Giants (http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/a-world-too-small-for-giants), but it could easily be adapted to fit in any campaign setting or even be a stop during a larger campaign arc (although this would require altering the ending). Feedback regarding the setting, pacing, and encounters would be greatly appreciated. I intend to run this for my group of friends and end around Halloween, and anyone wishing to borrow ideas, either in whole or in part, is more than welcome as long as you tell me how it went for your group.

NOTE: This is a work in progress, and I wanted to get a layout in place for myself so I had a framework to work within as I went.

Welcome to Fort Pioneer

http://th02.deviantart.net/fs36/PRE/i/2008/245/e/4/Slovenia_Mountain_Fortress_by_EricForFriends.jpg

This lonely fortress sits one the very edge of civilized lands, the first line of dense against the strange and terrible beasts and monsters of the far wilds. It stands guard over the only mountain pass within 100 miles, and while it is a fairly recent addition to the landscape, it has already withstood the test of goblin raids and roving trolls. But now it finds itself besieged by a legion of goblins led by cunning and vicious hobgoblin commanders. Supplies are dwindling, communication with the outside world is impossible, and there is no escape. Reinforcements are due to arrive in two weeks, but will they be too late?

And as if that weren't enough, there is something darker going on within the walls of the fort. People are going missing, and everyone has heard the whispers coming from the dark passages below the fortress...

The Cast

Below is a cast of ten premade characters, each with a statblock and a brief backstory to help players get into character. The Fortnight is designed to be a lethal adventure. Characters are expected to die, and when they do, they can simply pick up the next surviving character. However, these other characters are not simply waiting in the wings while the heroes are out repelling the goblin assault; when a new character is selected, roll on the death table and apply the penalties to the new characters accordingly.

If there are no more PC characters available, it is game over (although generous DMs can allow players to use NPC characters or even to generate new characters. Don't forget to roll on the death table!).

The Burned Book

Months after the events detailed in this adventure took place, a single item was recovered from the ruins of the fortress. It was a small book; many of its pages are torn or missing and the outer edges blackened by flame. It's widely believed that this was the journal of one of the officers permanently stationed at Fort Pioneer, although historians tend to disagree on this point. Some claim it was a mere conscripted soldier describing the affair, others counter that the elevated language prove that it was written by a wandering priest who sought refuge in the fort. But whoever wrote it, the first legible entries begin shortly before the siege did, and the bleak events that took place are described day by day within the cracked leather tome.

The goblins have us surrounded, but during the day it is difficult to feel fear. The chill winter air is crisp and bright, and almost everyone is of good spirits. Goblins have never captured taken even a settlement from the Empire before; how could they hope to take a fort? The magnificent tapestry in the great hall shows what is to come if the goblins continue this foolish assault. They will be met by our great warriors and slaughtered like the defenseless swine they are.

Today is a day of preparation and anticipation. The goblins do not attack until nightfall, and it is a good time to introduce the PCs to the inhabitants of Fort Pioneer. The overall attitude is optimistic; most believe that the goblins will throw themselves against the walls, be repelled, and be gone within the week. A few NPCs in particular stand out:

Renzo: He seems utterly certain that the siege will come down hard on the fort, and that few, if any will escape unscathed. Oddly, he seems unafraid in the face of this prophesied danger. "Have you made peace with the eleven? For your time on this world is coming to a close."

Alden: This man is utterly confident in the victory of the defenders. He is also fairly dimwitted. "Them goblins haven't got a chance. All we gotta do is shoot 'em and they're dead!"
