I have been working on this skill for my D20/Pathfinder games.

IMBUE (RELEVENT SPELLCASTING ABILITY)

The character is skilled in imparting magical properties into objects they create. Whenever they are working on an item, they are focusing their energy into the item they are creating. On the final day of creation the character makes a check to permanently bond this energy into the item. Imbue is treated as a craft skill for all appropriate circumstances.

Check: When crafting a magic item, the character makes an Imbue check (See Below) if this succeeds then the item takes on the magical properties appropriate for the item created. Failing this check means that the item does not function and the materials and time are wasted. Failing this check by 5 or more results in a cursed item (see Cursed Items for more information).

Item DC
Scroll DC 15 + Spell Level
Potion with a spell of 3rd level or lower DC 15 + Spell Level
Potion With a spell of 4th level or higher DC 12 + 2x Spell Level
All other items DC 20 + the caster level of the item

Note that all items have prerequisites in their descriptions. These prerequisites must be met for the item to be created. Most of the time, they take the form of spells that must be known by the item's creator (although access through another magic item or spellcaster is allowed). The DC to create a magic item increases by +5 for each prerequisite the caster does not meet. In addition, you cannot create spell-trigger and spell-completion magic items without meeting their spell prerequisites. The Use Magic Device skill can be used to emulate item prerequisites and negate this penalty.

When crafting an item your effective caster level is figured by either the combined effective caster level from all classes as outlined in Unearthed Arcana, or as your ranks in the Imbue skill -3. You may overchannel to try and craft items at a higher caster level, this adds +2 to the DC for each level. In addition if you overchannel you are exhausted for 1 hour per level you overchanneled and fatigued for an additional two hours per level afterward. All spells or appropriate components used must be of a high enough level to meet the prerequisites.

Check: Repair When making a check to repair an item the DC is half of the DC that would be required to create the item. In this case failure only results in a curse item if you fail by 10 or more.

Action: Does not apply, an Imbue check is made as part of crafting an item.

Synergy: Imbue gives a synergy bonus on Use Magic Device Checks and checks to appraise magic items

Imbue receives a synergy bonus from Concentration and Spellcraft

Take 10/20: you can take 10 on Imbue checks but cannot take 20 due to the risk of failure

If this skill is used, it works well to allow characters to take the Open Mind feat (+5 skill points) whenever they would normally be able to take an item creation feat.
