Something's been bothering me about horses in OOTS, and I finally spotted it.

Why do they have human feet?

They don't, they have horse feet. It is a bit hard to see, but a lot of the characters actually DO wear pants as well.

Horses are supposed to have HOOVES.

They're not horses, they're all 2 humanoids in a horse costume.

Horses are supposed to have HOOVES.

And people are supposed to have noses. It's just the art style.

I always thought that was part of their charm.

The only creatures we've seen that had hooves were demons, and they didn't have the stick legs--I think a hoof stuck on the end of the usual stick legs would look a bit silly, yet drawing the legs "properly" wouldn't fit in with the usual art style. (It works for demons because they're rarely seen and supposed to be monsters from the pits of hell anyway).

The OP has a point. The hooves of horses and also donkeys in OotS look pretty much the same as human feet in OotS do. As far as I can remember, we haven't had any of either animal since the donkey that Haley used to tow the cart with, last seen in OotS0575 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0575.html).

Now that's quite a few strips ago and there's been a gradual improvement in the artwork all along. Note, for example, that the camels in the caravan had somewhat better looking feet, as in OotS0687 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0687.html). Admittedly, they don't really look much like real camels' feet, but they're a step forward. I imagine if a horse shows up in a future strip it might have similar looking feet.

ETA: Pun not intended there. I'll take steps to avoid that in the future....

I find it disturbing that their legs are so scrawny that they shouldn't be able to support their weight. If those horses are about 6 feet from floor to crown then their legs are about 2 inches thick.

I seem to recall hearing that Rich intentionally wrote the Order's mounts out of the story because he hated how they looked. But I could be imagining that.

I must agree. I, for one, am not concerned about the level of descriptive realism in my stick figure comics about wizards and dragons.

Sort of. I'm going to paraphrase since I don't have the exact quote on-hand, but from what I recall, he soon realized that having the Order riding on horseback messed with perspective/size of the characters too much. Thus they were written out fairly quickly.

Why do they have human feet? They're reverse centaurs.

They were devils, actually. We also see a half-dragon centaur with hooves in the Familicide (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0639.html) montage.

Today I learned that characters in OOTS with foot fetishes might be deeply confused, possibly embarrassed and troubled, when they look at horses.

I accept this answer as the standing theory.

I searched Google Images for "horse with human feet". The second result is... How to describe? See for yourself. (SFW, but creepy as hell.)

Horses and humans both have dog feet, obviously.

Judging from 339 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0339.html) I wouldn't be that sure on this :smallwink:

Stick-figure-art is limited, and I think it is a fine way to draw hoofs (or noses) with it.

(But yeah, the here proposed theories have something for them as well )

Maybe they're wearing shoes.
