How to Random Banter:
General rules and guidelines of the Random Banter Thread

1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

14. Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait 50 threads before making another one.

15. If you can avoid dibs calling on making the next thread, that will avoid people needing to wait if the thread hits 50 pages while the dibs-caller is asleep.

:elan: Anyone found breaking the rules will be sent to stand in the corner and receive a very stern talking to! :elan:

Well, Forum Staff's Signature says

The above words represent the consensus of the entire Giant in the Playground staff, including the moderators, the webmaster, and Rich Burlew.

(The PM box for this account is not regularly monitored; please direct any PMs to the forum staff to Roland St. Jude, the forum guru. Thank you.)
So probably a shared account Rawhide took control of for this.

An excellent high school dramedy/action here parody. Seriously.

(if you read "seriously" in Motor Ed's voice, have a cookie)

The majority of the episodes are available online (those that aren't are probably lost in the coding on Disney's site, there but not actually viewable because they never give you the link).

Relevant Link (http://video.disney.com/shows/kim-possible-4ba34a96fd91059e961b9666)
Relevant Link 2 (http://sharetv.org/shows/kim_possible/watch)
Relevant Link 3 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Kim_Possible_episodes)

Season 1 is fairly meh. Season 2 sees a new director/producer/whatever and starts going in a slightly different direction. Not the best, but the three-parter is great ("Eat hot plasma Supreme One stooges!" "Viva La Resistance!"). Season 3 I haven't actually watched most of in a while, so I forget how good it is. Season 4 is by far the best.

You're telling me. Keep in mind it's only 6AM over here and I'm currently still curled up in bed surrounded by a stack of CDs.

I feel like a dragon on his hoard.

EDIT: Did I seriously write "hear" instead of "here"? The music's going to my hear head

Heh I like that comparison. Must protect the hoard!

"Complaining"? Did you not hear me compare myself to a dragon?

How is that anything but awesome?

Heh I like that comparison. Must protect the hoard!

If I was more creative I'd construct some elaborate metaphor about how music is, in a sense, a "treasure" but it's 6AM and I don't think I'm that "Disney".

Whatever, got my dragon swag on anyway. #dragon #2013 #protectthehoard #swag #realtrapmusic

I'd like to know what everyone's first Random Banter was, if they remember (general vicinity, if not). First one they posted on, that is.
Hm. Somewhere around one hundred and seventy and one hundred and eighty, I think.

I came in because TaiLiu talked about tea in #193. It gave me some way to say hello. I will refill and heat the kettle on the stove now. Does anyone want plain black tea in teabags that can go in the compost later or Chinese restaurant tea or black tea with vanilla in a plastic mesh teabag? I have sugar cubes ready and I will buy fresh milk and lemons at the farmer's market this morning.
I'll take my tea without teabags.

Yeah, I believe it turned out to be a load of poo, from what I recall.
Still, it is certainly an interesting reason to create such a thread.

Heh really 6AM currently? Nearly 2 in the afternoon here. But you don't need to confince me, I already know that there is great worth in music. Sadly, I do not really know much about musical genres and artists. I just know when I enjoy or hate a song that I hear.

Well I did apologize last thread for my rude assumption...it isn't that I think that you default to that though. It's more like I can see that you are very strong with your opinions which is a good thing, but I personally have never been good with my own opinions. It isn't that I think you are very argumentative, but that I think if I tried to really discuss my opinion on something versus yours, I may make an argument of it when I shouldn't, which is not what I want to do. I like discussion but am not sure how to properly go about it I guess. I haven't really talked to you here in RB as I have Teddy or Kneebs or Finny. I think that is the best way to put my words? No, even then I am still not sure that I put that right. Part of it also is that I can tell by the last thread that we do have some conflicting interests, like Big Bang Theory and Disney movies, and I know I saw other things I disagreed with you on but I can't recall at the moment.

Just...look, all that aside I don't dislike you or anything like that. I'm just trying to figure out how to talk to someone that seems to have so much different from me without seeming like a jerk. I think I am failing at that. At the very least, I never intended to make you feel upset or to judge you. I'm very sorry for that AllIHaveIs (think you said to use that instead of Crunk last thread, I could be wrong). :smallfrown:

Do people still wear watches, incidentally? I'd have thought the fact that basically every piece of pocket-sized electronics has a clock function had made them a bit redundant.

Speaking from personal experience, you'll probably find you have more fun once you stop worrying about how other people view the bars you set for things. Sure, you'll get the odd 'hard to please' and 'hates everything' remark, but that's just how it goes.

I started wearing a watch when I came to uni. I did have a watch before that, but I found them somehow super strange... However, ho and behold comes autumn 2012 and I have a new watch, and well, I would like to say I still have it but that'd be lie... I lost it, and bought an identical one to replace it... :smalltongue:

... What was my point? Ah. Yeah. I feel naked without it. I like keeping things analog, and I just sort of like having it on me. The ticking's loud but comforting. I've also found that having a watch has made me less obsessed about my phone, as before after looking the time I would go "well, I have it in my hand now, might as well do something else", but now I just quickly check the time (and date) on my watch, boom, done, back to being relatively productive.

I wasn't referencing a specific hip hop song, more the general lifestyle. It's escapism at its purest, really. Some folks fantasize about alien worlds or fighting dragons, my fantasies tend to involve me overlooking New York from my penthouse loft, clad in a very expensive Giorgio Armani suit even though I'm a wealthy spokesperson for Gucci. Typically I'm clutching a cigar when a very attractive person (I don't like to be picky :smalltongue:) walks in and hands me a glass of chilled rosé. And maybe I have seven gold chains on, or something. I dunno, my fantasies tends to be inconsistent when it comes to jewelry.

I think people mostly wear watches for fashion these days, though I might be wrong. For all my adoration of that lifestyle I really can't name a watch brand other than Rolex.

Believe me, I'd love to 'let it go' and not care what people think. And with fortnightly sessions with a psychologist maybe someday I'll get there. But for the time being I take negative feedback like a freight train. Though, in this case, I'm mostly very frustrated that I'm still being seen as some hostile snob despite my best effort to reign that part of me in. I feel like the effort wasn't even worth it, y'know? See, this is why I like 4chan. Even uncut and uncensored I'm one of the nicer folks there.

And, honestly, who wants to scare people off merely because they have different opinions? I'd like to exchange ideas, who knows, maybe someone will get me to change my mind. I think you'll find a post of me denouncing Adventure Time on one of those threads and now look at me! I love it! Dreams can come true, folks, but you won't know if you don't try.

My ambitious fantasies all involve the military. I would like to become a Brigadier-General or an Army Ranger someday, or maybe an ace pilot or paratrooper (the latter two are more likely, because if I join the military I'm going through the Air Force first). Otherwise, I would like to revolutionize something that should've been implemented but hasn't because budgets and patents and other politicking get in the way, like designing a squad automatic weapon that can have its sturdy machine gun barrel switched out with a thinner, shorter barrel that is comparable to the M4 Carbine, or dig up the gyrojet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gyrojet) and turn it into a sniper weapon.

What I actually hope to do is be a mechanic or a weldor (welder is what the machine is called), or maybe an engineer if I can get through college. Maybe gunsmithing as a hobby/part-time job.

Oh god. Aprill 2008. Gah. *NAME* was still in charge back then!:smalleek::smallconfused:
Looks that way. Surprising you'd remember that, considering your join date...

Sweet, 99 votes on the poll. Apparently we don't understand what a poll is.
Well whatever it is I'm not voting in it :smallwink:

I still don't have a tea ball. How are you going to get the tea leaves out?
I rather think the point of loose-leaf is that the leaves stay in.

So, I decided to see if Hulu had Sword Art Online...

I should probably get around to seeing that at some point. Probably once I cycle back around to the 'S' section on my Crunchyroll binge.

I decided not to make it 200 from the get go, but it is still a centenary - the second centenary.

I think 'bicentenary' is the word you're looking for here.

But if the leaves stay in, how can you tell Autumn from Spring?:smallconfused::smalleek:

Bah. The only tv show one needs is The backyardigans.:smallcool::smallbiggrin:

I want the 225th or 226th, because the word for 225th is Quasquibicentennial. I had the 176th, and i got to call the thread the post-Septaquintaquinquecentennial thread. (Also, if i remember right, the first day was on April Fool's and we all got ponified. The first post I could find by me in a RB thread was in thread 134, and it was truly a random post, as I then left and didn't say anything for what seems quite a while after that.

I think 'bicentenary' is the word you're looking for here.

No, bicentenary refers to completing 200 years threads, while centenary refers to completing 100 years threads. This is the first bicentenary of this thread, and the second centenary.

Here (http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/BF00136242) is the term second centenary used in a published academic journal.

I should probably get around to seeing that at some point. Probably once I cycle back around to the 'S' section on my Crunchyroll binge.

Apparently, Season 2 (which Hulu lists as Season 1, much to the confusion of some people who have heard there are two seasons) has some pacing problems, but that literally whizzed right by me because I watched it all at once. There's also complaints about Asuna being turned into the captive princess, but they managed to do it naturally enough and the new girl is strong enough. It also has a legit happy ending, which is practically nonexistent for shorter anime/manga (might help that it started as light novels and this is just an adaptation).

Only problem I have with Season 2 is that it's only a small leap to get Kirito = Kazuto, one that Leafa didn't make until he outright put a bridge down for her by telling her that he's here to save Asuna. Well, okay, that's not the only problem I have... there is a bit of squick. Thankfully the incest is prevented before it got physical (I doubt Kirito/Kazuto would've ever allowed it even if it wasn't incest, since he loves Asuna).

Alright, hear me out...

In X-Men, the humans hate the mutants, whom most of which just want to co-exist with the "normals" and live their lives...

The mind behind Mutant Rights is Professor X; a mutant that teaches that, with discipline over their mutations, Mutants can live among humans, and that humans can learn to live with mutants. He dreams of a Utopia where human and mutant are seen as equals and are treated the same.

However, Magneto, the leader of the rebellious Brotherhood of Mutants, thinks the only way for the mutants to survive, they must take the offensive against humanity. He preaches hate to his followers towards humanity and their crimes against their kind...

When thinking back to the Civil Rights Movement in America, doesn't Professor X kinda start to sound like Martin Luther King Jr., and Magneto like Malcolm X?

First Random Banter I hear you ask? That is a good question and I can't remember. But I did just check, and it was one hundred and seventy-five as far as I can tell.

The pendant was cheap and I wore it for maybe a week at most then got bored of it, so that can be thrown out unless someone there wants it. Laptop is essentially yours (and your sisters) 'cause I don't even use it unless I have no other option. Beads were for a cosplay that I never ended up doing anyways. The glass was just something I got from a promo at McDonalds, so you can have that. Other smaller things, just send me a PM about them and I'll guarantee that the majority of 'em could just be thrown out. I threw out a whole garbage bag of stuff when I moved.

Gosh, you actually cleaned out everything else?

I'd do something cool in Terraria but when I was without internet and kept trying to play it, my worlds kept disappearing. Made several topics on the official forums in the pc tech support section and never got a reply, so meh.

You should have gotten something prettier, rather than just going by the supposed health benefits of wearing crystalline minerals.
Anyway... When I have time, I shall do an inventory of the stuff you left behind and send it to you in a PM.

Mostly. All that remains is that bookcase to dust and the cupboard where I'm storing your stuff to go.

Is that still happening? That is decidedly odd if I do say so myself.

I couldn't quote from before so I just want to try to comment to Ele that I question the clubs here because where I live is so very small, but still I don't feel I have time to dedicate myself to a club currently. And I suppose I can ask my optometrist about prescription sunglasses, but I have no way to pay for it right now, so first I need to work that out.

I thought that was the case... Still, when you do have time, it is an option to consider.
You don't have to get them right now. It's just an idea for when you next go in for glasses.

*sadly looks at the lock up of previous thread*

But but what if I wanted to quote stuff?! :smalleek:

You could do what I did to quote Mynxae. What one does, is one copies the text, places it in a quote box, remembering to add in the formatting to add who the quote is from, and voilà! Instant quote!

If I was more creative I'd construct some elaborate metaphor about how music is, in a sense, a "treasure" but it's 6AM and I don't think I'm that "Disney".

There's no need! Treasure can be defined as anything valuable/desirable and tangible that can be stored securely. Therefore, a stack of CDs can be considered treasure.
Of course, there are many more possible definitions of treasure, but that one works the best in this situation and requires very little philosophy.

Do people still wear watches, incidentally? I'd have thought the fact that basically every piece of pocket-sized electronics has a clock function had made them a bit redundant.

I do, all the time. In fact, I'm wearing two watches, but one's twenty minutes slow.
But, that could just be because I really don't like pocket-sized electronics.

Still no idea who Bruce Campbell is. Aaaactooorror?

Doesn't he make soup?

Oh Finn... That's the oldest trick in the book! And a rather successful one at that... Unfortunately, it wouldn't work if I lost my watch as people would ask what happened to all the scratches on it and why it suddenly has a very slightly different band.

I too am a fan of analogue time pieces. I find the ticking very soothing, though I only hear it when it is very quiet. Also, I can kind of feel the ticking of my pocket watch from time to time, and I think that's cool.
But yes, nothing's more convenient than looking at one's wrist and immediately being able to ascertain the time and date. One just needs to remember to adjust it on the first of the month five times each year.

Also, in honour of the centenary of threads, I hereby decree that this thread shall go to 100 pages.

We just need to not instinctively revert to new thread mode at forty-eight pages.

On further investigation, I believe this (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4155646&postcount=733) was my first ever post in a Random Banter thread.
My first ever RB post was talking about the weather. How very British of me.

In that case, I suggest that the British be in charge of initial discussions with alien species. After all, most inhabited worlds are likely to have weather.

(Also, if i remember right, the first day was on April Fool's and we all got ponified. I hope to continue the tradition.)

That was a fun April Fool's... Was it this year or last year? I can't recall...

And here I was thinking it was because odd numbers sound snazzier. Guess I was wrong.

There are some countries that use 100khz spacing, and some that use 50khz, but the latter is being eliminated as most digital scan (as opposed to the analog knob) FM radios can't tune in an x.x5. The further the gap, the less interference between close channels and the more wideband the channels can be.

So, it took another two days, but I guess I'd start writing a few responses now. Also, I'm feeling somewhat unwell and can't maintain several levels of thought, so my writing feels like it's going to be a bit different than usual. Mostly because I can't rembember if there was something I wanted to say when I begun writing the paragraph.

Also, I should really get to my schoolwork...

My schedule already feels recursive enough... I think it'd be nice to get to a good place and just freeze it there... *drifts off*

I definitely agree. Problem is, I won't get to get to the best of places for as long as uni keeps interfering, and if I froze time, I'd never get there...

That was quite poetic Teddy. But to me at least the idea of rain clouds isn't bleak. They are like a sign of spreading life, of revitalization of the land, and depending on how much rain sometimes an area of peace in an otherwise tumultuous life. We had many clouds here yesterday, but they seem to have vanished now without leaving their gift, all that remains being a small chill. I believe I shall commence with the snuggling from that.

Thanks!

Yeah, over here, the rainiest season is the autumn, when all life withers or otherwise goes into hibernation, and the autumn rain is usually cold and drab. There is no such thing as a revitalising rain in the autumn...

Hehe rather out there Teddyy, but everyone has their preferences. :smalltongue: Mine personally are (according to this math program thing) between 18 C and 26 C. Warmish without boiling me. And failing that, I enjoy cold weather since for me it is easier than handling hot weather.

For me, half of it is about being able to keep the right body temperature throughout a multitude of activities. 25-30°C is good, because then I don't have to wear anything warm which gets sticky if I start to sweat, and -10°C and below is good, since I can easily dress warm enough for it with proper winter clothes, yet I'll seldom get too warm even if I'm active... :3

I realised I'm having a hard time deciding who's my favourite Swede - Nalle or Kurre. :smalleek: Ack! They're both so nice!

Naww...

Well, considering Nalle thinks I'm doubly awesome (as quoted in my sig) I must be the better Swede.

Then again, Teddy is pretty awesome as well, restoring old trains and stuff.

Hehehe, thanks! :3

Also, we're not as much restoring as enhancing it, steampunking it up to our dreams...

A digital version or a physical copy? From a store or through the mail?

If you got a physical copy through a store then someone might have just broken street date. It's been a while since I worked in retail, but a lot of times if a store breaks the street date (release date) and gets caught then it pretty much means everyone else gets to as well.

Admittedly, the last time I remember this happening it was almost a week and a half before street date rather than less than a day.

It was indeed a physical copy.

Also, looking back through the threads, I noticed I've manage to post more than several of the Forumites I saw as great and talkactive Banterites when I GitP-grew up. The nostalgia is actually making me feel a bit sad...

Do people still wear watches, incidentally? I'd have thought the fact that basically every piece of pocket-sized electronics has a clock function had made them a bit redundant.

I do, an old watch I've had for years with a twice-cracked glass on it. I got a new watch last Christmas to replace this one, but the battery ran out within half a year and this one ticks on, so I changed back.

And part of the reason for why my phone hasn't managed to replace it is because it's much less convenient to carry around. I'm not very fond of putting larger objects in the pockets of my pants, so I've only got my fleece jackets or shorts (with leg pockets) to fall back on...

Some people want money. I want respect. I want to have an impact.

Well, going into the ballistics industry should certainly help with the impact part... :smallwink:

I want the 225th or 226th, because the word for 225th is Quasquibicentennial. I had the 176th, and i got to call the thread the post-Septaquintaquinquecentennial thread. (Also, if i remember right, the first day was on April Fool's and we all got ponified. I hope to continue the tradition.)
No. No ponies. Never again.

Are you trolling? That's the entire point. X-Men is a big analogy to the American Civil Rights movement.

So I just got back from a computer science competition and saw there was a new Random Banter thread! With a poll! Anyway, my first random banter was #199, so I'm still pretty new.

It's one of those "not that great looking but really awesome personality" dates. Here's hoping it goes well

I am fantastic Hally, how about you? :smalltongue:

Indeed! Very much hoping so. Nice people are treasures to find, :smalltongue:

I am...ehh. :smallfrown: Way too many worries and haven't at all found a sufficient way to vent them all out. And then I wake up 3 hours later than I mean to and discover my girlfriend called an hour ago. :smallsigh: So now? Very unwell. Though I am not wanting this to make others feel less fantastic. So please stay joyous.

Also, in honour of the centenary of threads, I hereby decree that this thread shall go to 100 pages.

Woohoo! I am down for that.

It is very strong tea behind the vanilla flavor. Don't drink it after dinner. :smalleek:

Ah I see. I have only ever really had sweetened ice tea, I just know that I enjoy vanilla coffee, so why would I not like vanilla tea? :smalltongue:

I thought that was the case... Still, when you do have time, it is an option to consider.
You don't have to get them right now. It's just an idea for when you next go in for glasses.

Oh yes I certainly shall. 2 other club ideas I have for when I have some money to back it up is to maybe run an official tabletop gaming club somewhere up here, and also if a certain friend of mine starts a jujitsu dojo I would be happy to join that once I have the funds.

Yes indeed. I shall ask once I can. I'll be talking to my grandma tomorrow about insurance. But I have to keep mentioning it so I don't forget. :smalltongue:

So, officially back to my dorm from Comic Con.
results: 2 gundam models, 3 T-shirts: one "Essential NPC- Do Not Kill", one Charmander Shepard, and one "So many books, so little time" with a dragon on it. No one got the outfit I was wearing, probably because I couldn't find a single Fallout cosplayer. Got to see Dark Souls 2. Will have pictures once my parents get them off their camera.

Well I am very glad you had some fun out there. Heh I can't believe on one there got your outfit, that is so unfortunate. :smallconfused: Well eh, at least there was still fun and great souvenirs.

My first random banter?

This one!

Right now!

Well welcome to it! Have fun with the massive amounts of banter. And have a cookie!

Like vastly many others, I was drawn in to this, my first random banter, by the tantalizing sight of a poll icon! HOW COULD I RESIST?

I'm not really much of one for directionless chatter. :smalltongue:

Well hello Tuggy and welcome in! Yeah the poll does seem to have that siren lure to it. :smalltongue: And it isn't really directionless. It just has many different directions at once. But there actually usually is some form of consistent communication.

Thanks!

Yeah, over here, the rainiest season is the autumn, when all life withers or otherwise goes into hibernation, and the autumn rain is usually cold and drab. There is no such thing as a revitalising rain in the autumn...

Yes, it seems Teddy has been gone for some time. Well, welcome back!

Ehh....I have school stuff to do too. :smalleek: Not helped by me not waking up until so late now... *mild panicking*

Well I did greatly like it! I see rain as revitalizing because I love the smell of it, the cool feel, and wind that is usually part of it, and our lake here is almost dead right now, so rain is much appreciated for that.

Yeah, I suppose that is very workable. To me with clothes comfort is very important.

I'd write more but delays...issues...gah. I think I'm gonna go curl up in a ball for today. I'll write back when I can. :smallfrown:

There's no need! Treasure can be defined as anything valuable/desirable and tangible that can be stored securely. Therefore, a stack of CDs can be considered treasure.
Of course, there are many more possible definitions of treasure, but that one works the best in this situation and requires very little philosophy.

I was aiming less for philosophy and more for poetry. I failed anyway so it's a hypothetical discussion.

I am so not up with the Pokemon. Until this thread I could have sworn that franchise had died. Maybe I should get X or Y and see what the fuss is about. It'd be good to play with the sound off while listening to my music.

This is probably an excessive ask given the level of detail on the subject but is it possible to have an avatar made of the rapper Riff Raff (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--X69fKFmwC4/URk67BoRwyI/AAAAAAAANb0/xRnG6LgEO9w/s640/riff+raff.jpg)? I'd like to know what everyone's first Random Banter was, if they remember (general vicinity, if not). First one they posted on, that is.

It was around the mid-seventies I believe, probably Cassie's or D'anna's, but to be honest it might have been a little earlier.

Oh! What teas were these?

The Lost Ones:
Raspberry, strawberry and loganberry tea
Lady Grey
Rose tea
Jasmine tea
Cherry blossom tea
Earl Grey
Peppermint tea
Lemon and ginger tea
Strawberry and apple tea
Assam tea
Chamomile and honey tea
Four bags of darjeeling

Most of these were anywhere from full to a fifth full. And all but four of them were fifty bags to the box. The other four were only twenty. So I lost around one hundred and fifty bags of tea. A bit more actually, but I'm estimating roughly.

The Saved Ones:
Peppermint
Lemon verbena
Chamomile
And the four 'bags' of an expensive, house mix of hibiscus, [something] and rose hips tea that I'd bought from a speciality shop last month.

Or in terms of numbers: seventy-nine bags of tea.

Yeah. I lost a lot of tea, so I'm curled up on this saggy sofa typing online while cradling a cup of chamomile tea listening to 'White Wine in the Sun' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCNvZqpa-7Q) because damn, that's a wonderful song.

Most could be contained in a single re-used danish butter cookie tin that any grandma or mom would have spare lying around the house for storage. Depending upon your preference (I like to live dangerously) you can either subdivide them inside sandvich baggies or just have the teabags loose inside the tin.

Or liking soda? :smalltongue:

Yeah it probably is narrow-mindedness. Coffee of all flavors bitter without a lot of milk and sugar, although the level varies and a good flavor can overcome that, tea is all over the place but it's possible to like or dislike all of them, and soda is super-sweet but again is all over the place (especially when you get into ones that replace the high fructose corn syrup or sugar with healthier natural stuff).

As someone that lived in rural suburbia (with a stronger emphasis on rural than the suburbia, although there was a fair share of both) for quite a long time, we only had a serious problem with power once or twice.

Let's be indecisive buddies. We'll get a bracelet and have meetings and we won't invite girls. It'll be fun!

Heheheh :smallamused: I laughed at that probably a good bit more than I should have.

The Lost Ones:
-snip-
Most of these were anywhere from full to a fifth full. And all but four of them were fifty bags to the box. The other four were only twenty. So I lost around one hundred and fifty bags of tea. A bit more actually, but I'm estimating roughly.

The Saved Ones:
-snip-
Or in terms of numbers: seventy-nine bags of tea.

As has been said - that's quite an impressive collection of tea - both to have had and to have lost. Sorry, man. :\

Not liking soda I get, you're a human being. The other two perplex me. It's me and my narrow mind but I cannot imagine anyone, anywhere, from any walk of life not liking coffee or tea.

Some sodas are objectively better than others, and I could argue over those all day (as I'm sure several people here could do with teas and coffees). I never really liked coffee all that much, although I have had it once recently (some people were giving out free coffee one morning, and... hey, free coffee), and while what I had I'm going to assume was not the good stuff, it still wasn't bad.

Plus, sassafras tea is just plain awesome. :smallcool:

100% disagree.

I don't like coffee at all, even with milk and sugar, so I will use tea.

Milk != tea with milk and sugar
Sugar != tea with milk and sugar
Tea != tea with milk and sugar
Milk and sugar != tea with milk and sugar
Tea and milk != tea with milk and sugar
Tea and sugar != tea with milk and sugar
Only tea with milk and sugar is = tea with milk and sugar

It's a combination of all three (or the lack of one or two) that makes the drink. If you like tea with nothing added, you should enjoy it that way, if you prefer a mixture, you should enjoy it the way you enjoy it. Liking tea or coffee with milk and sugar does not make it any less of a drink or mean you're adding them because you like them and not the tea or coffee. It means you like the combination, or the way that the extra ingredients improve the flavour.

Coffee ice cream normally doesn't have much real coffee in it, I've found, and almost without exception merely duplicates the smell of coffee as a part of the flavor, not the taste of it. (and yes, there is a distinction between the two as far as flavor is concerned).

Also, in that case, one would like coffee-flavored ice cream, and not necessarily coffee.

Well, you did specify with a lot of milk and sugar. And while I can follow your logic, I take quite a bit of issue with one disliking component parts of a composite food, and then claiming to like a specific food entirely based upon separate component parts. If you like coffee only with lots of milk and sugar, then that has to be treated as an entirely different entity from unadulterated coffee.

Judging by your response, I think we probably have a relatively close view on this subject (from a logical standpoint, although not from a visceral one), but I like to try to make myself clear.

So, in other words, you don't like coffee, you only like coffee mixed with boiling water?

Now, normally I'd ceed the point to sardonicism and just chuckle, but that's not quite true, either. Coffee is the name of the beverage, after the grinds have been mixed with water. I don't have any particular preference for coffee grinds, though, no. (although the coffee beans themselves can be pretty good). The same goes for tea, by the way - Tea is the name of the beverage, and it isn't tea until you steep the tea leaves in boiling water.

You did say drink to start with, Amidus. I know that you can't drink a dry bean even if you put it in a blender. Not that a blender does a good job cutting up dry beans either. If you want bean flour it's better to buy bean flour and not almost ruin a blender. :smallannoyed:

There are some countries that use 100khz spacing, and some that use 50khz, but the latter is being eliminated as most digital scan (as opposed to the analog knob) FM radios can't tune in an x.x5. The further the gap, the less interference between close channels and the more wideband the channels can be.

That makes quite a bit of sense. One wouldn't want the traffic report mixed in with the weather. That could be confusing.
Still, now that I've thought on it more, odd number do sound snazzier...

I blame our friend J for saying I need feminine jewellery when I feel girly. :smallannoyed: Excellent, thank you muchly.

I got sick of it after doing it twice. I even had a cool ice house and everything in the second world! :smallfrown:

Personally, basing jewellery choices on whether they're girly or not is a terrible idea. Jewellery should be more refined and mature in my opinion.
It'll take a while to get around to doing so. I've gotten bad news today.

Perhaps reinstalling Terraria might resolve the issue? Or have you already tried that to no particular avail?

Oh yes I certainly shall. 2 other club ideas I have for when I have some money to back it up is to maybe run an official tabletop gaming club somewhere up here, and also if a certain friend of mine starts a jujitsu dojo I would be happy to join that once I have the funds.

Yes indeed. I shall ask once I can. I'll be talking to my grandma tomorrow about insurance. But I have to keep mentioning it so I don't forget. :smalltongue:

Hmm... Everything always seems to boil down to the funds... If only I could determine a method of transmuting one metal into another that is both practical and cost effective. Then I could patent the process and get rich.

Fortunately we don't have to worry about health insurance as much over here. I mean, we could get private health if we wanted, but it's expensive.

Rural suburbia?

I was aiming less for philosophy and more for poetry. I failed anyway so it's a hypothetical discussion.

Hmm... Odd. As far as I can determine, electrical supply is always regular in my part of the world, from urban areas to isolated homesteads... Perhaps the climate here is more conducive to the longevity of power lines. After all, we get no snow and less rain than most places. All one needs to do is construct the telegraph poles, no idea why we still call them telegraph poles, out of a fire resistant timber, many of which grow here naturally, and avoid thick scrub and bushland if possible.

Eh... All I did was check a dictionary before beginning. I find that usually helps keep me from making incorrect statements.

ION:
So Sister managed to spill water all over my teas and only four boxes escaped the deluge; three because they'd not yet been opened and one only has four more bags in it. :sigh:
So much lost.
But the Harrod's stuff is all good though because I'd been working through my 'commoner' teas. Off to mourn by imbibing tea and figuring out if I'm allowed to take paracetamol on these pills, and what amount is permitted if I am.
My head is killing me.

Even though I admit my dislike of tea, I can understand what it's like to lose stored beverages that one was looking forward to enjoying. Particularly if they're in glass bottles and you dropped them causing shattered glass to go everywhere and have to get stitches.
One would think I'd remember that occasion vividly, but strangely enough, I can't...
Also, I hate it when medication means you have to be picky about what you take for headaches. Mine says I can't take aspirin, which is a shame because it's always worked the best for when I have headaches.

Most could be contained in a single re-used danish butter cookie tin that any grandma or mom would have spare lying around the house for storage. Depending upon your preference (I like to live dangerously) you can either subdivide them inside sandvich baggies or just have the teabags loose inside the tin.

Biscuit tins are the best for storage. Of course, I don't have anything that would make sense to store in them, so there goes that idea...

Not liking soda I get, you're a human being. The other two perplex me. It's me and my narrow mind but I cannot imagine anyone, anywhere, from any walk of life not liking coffee or tea.

I had tea once. I hated it. Adding vast quantities of sugar and much milk made it palatable for all of a minute before I had to pour it down the kitchen sink.
As for coffee... I had learned from my experience with tea that more drastic measures were in order and loaded it up with brown sugar, cinnamon, regular sugar and allspice. I was able to consume two thirds of the cup before again, pouring it down the kitchen sink.
Personally, if offered tea or coffee, I would much rather prefer hot water with a generous helping of honey.

But sugar is natural! We grow it over here in Queensland in vast fields which we traditionally set on fire prior to harvesting, a practice which has declined due to modern farming techniques. However, if you have issue with refined white sugar, you can purchase raw sugar...
Just for reference, raw sugar tastes nicer.

That reminds me, I need to get the battery in my pocket watch replaced somewhere...

Would have been the year before, because I don't remember it.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again: If you put milk or sugar into your coffee, you don't like coffee - you like milk and sugar.

Well, if you ever go to shopping malls, as you call them in America, then you may be fortunate enough to pass by a kiosk like shop in the middle of the walking area that replaces batteries and does minor repairs on watches.
Okay, I'm not describing this very well, and it may be highly likely you don't even have such things over there.
In any case, failing that, try a jeweller. A lot of them also do small things like that. Just, don't rely on them to get your watch fixed. They'll often send it away and you won't see it again for weeks. Of course, all this depends on the jeweller in question, as I know that some of them are also watchmakers or watch repairers.

I thought as much. It is a shame you missed it though, it was a rather fun to see how everyone responded and the mods had such cool pony avatars for the occasion.

Personally, I don't think that makes sense at all. I like milk and sugar, but I hate coffee despite how much I add.
It should be better amended to: If you put milk or sugar into your coffee, you don't like coffee - you like a concoction of coffee, milk and sugar.
Damn... Other people have already made this point... Oh well. Not much to do about it now.

What if you like coffee ice cream, eh, and you want your coffee to taste like coffee ice cream? Milk + sugar != coffee ice cream. Only milk + sugar + coffee = coffee ice cream.

Hmm... Coffee ice cream... I know I hate coffee, but I like coffee cake, and I have a feeling I've had coffee ice cream before and enjoyed it... It is strange how these things work out.

I don't normally post in random banter but didn't really feel like putting this anywhere else.

About as mild of an injury as you can get with a power tool, but it was my first trip to the ER in a decade or more. Kick back on a table saw. Didn't even realize it was that bad, I finished making the cut and looked down later and saw it. I tried but wasn't able to do anything with it on my own. Didn't even need a stitch.

That looks painful, but I can see why at the same time you probably didn't notice it at first... The ability of the human body to get impaled without noticing is amazing.

Guys, go watch Gravity. Now.

In unrelated news: I went to my psychiatrist appointment this morning and on the way home stopped at a nice little bookstore in the city. I think I have a problem with impulse buying...

But in more serious news: My Grandma died recently. She'd had a stroke on the weekend, yet despite that, it still seems too soon.
And now I feel really bad for not visiting yesterday like we had originally planned, even though it's not my fault that we didn't visit... The situation hasn't really sunk in yet.

Hmm...

I don't know what to say. Incompetence abounds over here, I guess.

You're an alien. I am missing black coffee so much. Maybe if I stand close to you I'll like it less and I won't miss it so much

Indeed, from degenerate British time travelers (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eELH0ivexKA) to mad scientists descended from the horribly mutated survivors of an attempt at xenocide on the human race by aliens from beyond the stars. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFMwgOfdG_M)

TF2 reference, I'd forgotten there was one for black metal, unfortunately. I'd occasionally deliberately made the typo from time to time because I liked it before TF2, but that's neither here nor there, just random hipsterism.

I assumed it was TF2. Still I wanted to make sure. If I had met another black metal bro that would have been swell.

"Healthier" and "soda" are two terms I could never even fathom in close proximity. Tell me more about these "healthier" corn flavoured sodas.

I love soda, but can't stand coffee or most teas.

You disappoint me. And CAN (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ac2KkpF1n3Q), not coincidentally.

See, most people I know feel the other way. They can understand not liking coffee and tea, but think it's super weird that I don't drink soda.

Are we talking about coffee again? I like coffee. I think I've mentioned that once or twice before.

My mum sent me a pot of honey off some farm near where they live. It is so delicious I think I've eaten half of it straight from the pot. I miss my dad's hives :/

Hmm... Incompetence is a highly plausible explanation... Is it an area with really old electrics? If the issues are as recurrent as you say, then they may need replacing.
Of course, as is the case with governing bodies, it'll take them a while to get around to it unless there's an election coming.

I could be an alien. I might even have an armada of highly advanced battlecruisers stationed on the far side of the Moon waiting for my signal to begin conquering the planet. If that were the case, I would advise you all very strongly not to resist and pay me tribute annually.
Fortunately, I don't have an armada, but I could still be an alien. Alas, I don't have the power to stop people liking tea or coffee.

My mum sent me a pot of honey off some farm near where they live. It is so delicious I think I've eaten half of it straight from the pot. I miss my dad's hives :/

Indeed. There is nothing better than honey fresh from the hives. One can never know just what the bees will manage to produce. I remember this one time when my parents checked up on my Dad's old hives and the honey was tinged green and mint flavoured. Unfortunately, I never got to taste it myself and it appeared to have been a one off fluke.
Alas, my Dad's hives all went wild and died out, and his recent attempts to start up some new hives at my Uncle's farm weren't successful. Looks like I'll just have to go and find really good honey to buy rather than have it delivered free of charge. Fortunately, if one knows where to look, one can get good stuff.
Mmm... Forestry honey...

The Lost Ones:
Raspberry, strawberry and loganberry tea
Lady Grey
Rose tea
Jasmine tea
Cherry blossom tea
Earl Grey
Peppermint tea
Lemon and ginger tea
Strawberry and apple tea
Assam tea
Chamomile and honey tea
Four bags of darjeeling

Most of these were anywhere from full to a fifth full. And all but four of them were fifty bags to the box. The other four were only twenty. So I lost around one hundred and fifty bags of tea. A bit more actually, but I'm estimating roughly.

The Saved Ones:
Peppermint
Lemon verbena
Chamomile
And the four 'bags' of an expensive, house mix of hibiscus, [something] and rose hips tea that I'd bought from a speciality shop last month.

Or in terms of numbers: seventy-nine bags of tea.

Yeah. I lost a lot of tea, so I'm curled up on this saggy sofa typing online while cradling a cup of chamomile tea listening to 'White Wine in the Sun' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCNvZqpa-7Q) because damn, that's a wonderful song.
Damn, that's a shame. :smallfrown:
And I was sad when I opened my box of Earl Grey the other day to find none left...

'Fraid not.

coffee
noun
1. a beverage consisting of a decoction or infusion of the roasted ground or crushed seeds (coffee beans) of the two-seeded fruit (coffee berry) of certain coffee trees.
2. the seeds or fruit themselves.
3. any tropical tree or shrub of the genus Coffea, of the madder family, especially C. arabica and C. canephora, cultivated commercially. Compare Arabian coffee, robusta coffee.
4. a cup of coffee: We ordered four coffees and three doughnuts.
5. a social gathering at which coffee and other refreshments are served.
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/coffee

The point I'm making is that it's perfectly ok to like and say you like coffee and/or tea, but only when it has something added to modify or improve it.

Do you like coffee when it has a 1:1 ratio of ground instant coffee beans to water (or equivalent brewed)? Or when the coffee content percentage is even thicker compared to the water? You might, and some very well do, but most do not.

Do you like chocolate? I don't mean the kind with milk and sugar added, I mean the pure, bitter, original kind. Some do, most like some amount of enhancement in their chocolate. It's all still chocolate (even white chocolate, despite containing no actual chocolate).

Tea with milk and sugar is still tea. Coffee with milk and sugar is still coffee. People like their teas and coffees different ways, it doesn't change what the drink is and it doesn't mean they like the other things and not the tea or coffee.

---

Additionally, the point Jade Dragon was making was that he hates cheddar, but likes beans, and likes adding cheddar to beans to improve their flavour. So, by your original statement, he likes cheddar - but he doesn't.

Someone could quite easily dislike milk and/or sugar, but like drinking their tea/coffee with milk and/or sugar. In fact, I know a few of these people.

Yup. Store-bought honey over here is so tasteless and watery.

I like that you can actually taste the difference in honey from different sources of nectar. Except over here there's a tree over here (the milk... wood? no milkwood is a separate tree. It's local name is !Xoi, as if that means anything to anyone /tangent) that makes the bitterest, most inedible honey ever that tastes like turpentine. I remember my dad having to discard whole racks because of it. He had to leave the hives when we moved off the farm, more's the shame.

Hmm... We never get store bought honey that's watery, but you can tell they dilute it.

Unfortunately, my taste buds aren't up to the standard required to fully appreciate these things... But the difference is there, even if I mainly notice that the honey is a different colour.
It's name needs to be spelt with an exclamation mark..? I can't help but find that really weird. Name aside, it makes the honey that bad? Truly, a more diabolical tree has not yet been found, except the Manchineel. Damn that tree is scary... It is a shame you had to give up the hives though. The only reason my Dad was able to keep his despite not owning rural property is that we are lucky to have friends and relatives who didn't mind him keeping hives in the less travelled parts of their properties. Hopefully they went to someone who'd look after them.

I just thought of something that would really improve Chrono Trigger (not that it's not already great):

If, in New Game Plus, the dialogue was changed such that it was clear that the PCs realize they're in a rerun, and are trying to follow the "script" as best they can but beat Lavos earlier. Other characters, not knowing this, would have slightly different reactions to them because none of them are good actors. After all, it is a time-travel game.

Well I did greatly like it! I see rain as revitalizing because I love the smell of it, the cool feel, and wind that is usually part of it, and our lake here is almost dead right now, so rain is much appreciated for that.

Yeah, over here and in the autumn, "cool" means "cold", and it does nothing to brighten up the few colours there are...

...I like that dark, deadening rain, though... it has a nice, grim feel to it.

I would also protest that there are revitalizing rains in autumn - we had one such rain last night. It was a light rain, akin to a mist, and it was just heavy enough to make itself obvious if you looked where it had fallen or ran through it. It was quite pleasant.

I do admit that it's awesomely cosy to snuggle up in a heating blanket and listen to the heavy drops hitting the window sills, but if your autumn rain is revitalising, you're not having a proper autumn to start with... :smallwink:

Some sodas are objectively better than others, and I could argue over those all day (as I'm sure several people here could do with teas and coffees). I never really liked coffee all that much, although I have had it once recently (some people were giving out free coffee one morning, and... hey, free coffee), and while what I had I'm going to assume was not the good stuff, it still wasn't bad.

Not liking soda I get, you're a human being. The other two perplex me. It's me and my narrow mind but I cannot imagine anyone, anywhere, from any walk of life not liking coffee or tea.

Heh well I feel odd now. :smalltongue: May as well weigh in on the drink talk to try to fit in.

I am never picky about soda. Pretty much nearly any kind I just love. That's me. Probably because I love sugar. That and it is easier for my family to get it in bulk than milk. But dang love that milk. I like sweet ice tea, but otherwise I don't care for it. I don't know enough about other types of tea, having never had the chance to explore the wonderful world of tea. :smalleek: And with coffee, I enjoy french vanilla and I like a few different kinda of creamers, but milk and sugar usually isn't enough for me to enjoy it.
