the rules say adamantium has 40 hp per inch and a 20 hardness, does that mean 4 inchs would have 160 hp and 60 hardness?

It would have 160HP, but hardness doesn't stack. It remains at 20.

Also, it's Adamantine.

What is this "Adamantium" you speak of? Isn't that from Marvel?

Xerlith is correct, in whole and in part.

I'd use...

OBDURIUM

- STRONGHOLD BUILDERS GUIDE (3.0)
Ammunition: +120 gp
Light Armor: +10,000 gp
Medium Armor: +20,000 gp
Heavy Armor: +30,000 gp
Weapon: +6,000 gp
This incredibly rare and hard metal represents the pinnacle of non-magical strength. Treat weapons and armor crafted from obdurium as adamantine, except for hardness (30), hit points (60 per inch of thickness, or twice as many hit points as a typical item), and price (twice the listed price for adamantine).
Editor: Actually, there is no reason to buy this over adamantine, unless for some reason the hit points of your equipment is a big issue for you.

Then you can cast the spell...

HARDENING

- DEITIES AND DEMIGODS (3.0)
- EBERRON CAMPAIGN SETTING (3.5)
- MAGIC OF FAERÛN (3.0)
- SPELL COMPENDIUM (3.5)
Transmutation
Level: Artifice Domain 7, Magewright 4, Sorcerer/Wizard 6
Components: V, S, M
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Touch
Target: One item of a volume no greater than 10 cu. ft./level; see text
Duration: Permanent
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: Yes (object)
For every two caster levels, add 1 point of hardness to the material targeted by the spell. This hardness increase improves only the material’s resistance to damage. Nothing else is modified by the improvement.

Cast by a 20th level guy (Or an artificer pretending to be 20th level) you can in theory get up to 40 hardness. Much better then Adamantine for purposes of shielding.

The psion's Matter Manipulation is better than the Hardening spell, since it's instantaneous instead of permanent.
