Questions pertaining to a certain monster as a PC

Hi, everyone! I was wondering if anybody knows of any good progression or scaling Illithid / Ulitharid (either works) classes / races that isn't so horrible there is no point, or so broken it is unfair!

I don't think a mindflayer makes a balanced PC because it has quite a few abilities which are spammable at-will, and can break the game (charm monster at will?).

The closest thing I can think of is the flayerspawn psychic prc in complete psionic (basically a prc that lets you take illithid heritage feats). Between this and your innate manifesting, you should be able to simulate some of a mindflayer's abilities, but without breaking the game.
