Hello everybody, I would like to ask for some help... My youngest nephew has been watching me use the computer, looking through books, and playing D&D and has taken to the mind flayers quite a bit! He, for the past month or so, has been asking me to get him a mind flayer toy and I don't know where to go about getting one! :smalleek:

I've done countless Google searches, asked the hobby shop, gone to friends looking for help and nothing... I come to all of you asking for a site, shop, tutorial or something where I could make/purchase something that resembles a mind flayer without going for a Pirates of the Caribbean Davy Jones toy. Octopus and squid toys don't work either, I learned that one at Wal-Mart yesterday :smallsigh:

Please help me with this, it would make the little guy very happy and me very relieved!

All I could find were D&D miniatures, which are small and tend to be expensive. One issue is that illithid/mind flayer is claimed by WOTC as "product identity" so any maker would have to license any toys or face potential litigation. Presumably this is more trouble than it's worth for a relatively niche creature that is pretty much entirely unknown outside of D&D players.

It doesn't have to be a mind flayer per se, just something that resembles it enough that he won't say "No, dat's not a mind flayah."
For being three years old, he's a smart cookie. As much as I hate to say it, he outwits me frequently. I'm twenty :smallannoyed:

I kind of thought one of the models from the first Bones kickstarter by Reaper minis was a not quite a mind flayer. You could look there. I don't know if they yet have the models for general sale but if not I'm sure someone can sell you one and ship it to you.

Perhaps something Cthulhu related instead?
There certainly is a more than passing resemblance between the two creatures.

I was about to say, there's a fair bit of Cthulhu merchandise out there - it's not quite the same thing, but it might be close enough. I personally think these Cthulhu plushies (http://www.toyvault.com/cthulhu/index.html) are pretty adorable, but you know your nephew's tastes better than I.

I'm looking through that now and I'm not seeing which one (other than Cthulhu) that resembles a mind flayer - only just began looking through though.
How big are the models anyway?

Ooh, Cthulhu! Other than the wings this works quite well  Easy fix though, and I'm learning how to sew!

I went and looked through them too and didn't see anything. I could have sworn I saw a character model of one somewhere but it must not have been bones. Most of the normal sized models are probably a bit over 2" tall though, maybe not a great gift for a small kid.

You mean this guy (http://www.ebay.com/itm/REAPER-Bones-Miniature-Bathalian-77020/281155394960?_trksid=p2047675.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222002%26algo%3DSIC.FIT%26ao%3D1%2 6asc%3D18348%26meid%3D2085902119084589777%26pid%3D 100011%26prg%3D8402%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D5%26sd%3D3807 15536976%26)? I agree though, not the best thing for a three year old.

Yikes, that's small! Probably not the best thing for him, he chews on everything and fairly recently had to get a bead removed from his nose.... a miniature would hurt more than a smooth bead :smalleek:

In that case, a clip winged Cthulhu plush may be the best option.

Indeed
Thank you all for the help, it's very appreciated. I'll be purchasing a cthulhu plush soon-ish

We went to Cthulhu Chick (http://cthulhuchick.com/) to get a crocheted Elder Evil for my daughter a couple years ago (she's 4 now). Very good experience.

EDIT: Aw, bad news from her etsy store (http://www.etsy.com/shop/cthulhuchick), looks like she's recovering from a hand injury. :smallfrown:

Thanks for the suggestion. It's a shame her hand is injured though, her stuff I saw looked pretty danged cool.
