In drow of the underdark, we are introduced to a small list of alternate class features. Among these is the abyssal specialist wizard. In exchange for a single prohibited school (which cannot be divination), you become specialized in spells of the chaotic, compulsion, darkness, evil, and fear descriptors.

Questions:

Given that each specialization has a label often used in place of wizard (necromancy specialist wizards for instance are necromancers), what label would one refer to for abyssal specialist wizards?

Are there any other non-school oriented specializations for wizards, and where would one find them?

Is there any reason one would take abyssal specialization over a standard school specialization? Anything that would compliment this in terms of Prestige classes or feats?

Are there any other non-school oriented specializations for wizards, and where would one find them? The only ones I can think of are the Elf Wizard sub levels from RotW, the Domain Wizard from UA, and the Changeling Wizard sub level from RoE.

Is there any reason one would take abyssal specialization over a standard school specialization? Anything that would compliment this in terms of Prestige classes or feats? The Abyssal Heritor feats from FC1, namely Chaotic Spell Recall, and the Planar Wizard ACF from the Planar Handbook. Combining those two with the Abyssal Specialist ACF gives you the ability to specialize in EVERY SPELL EVER, and to become a walking Pearl of Power with no limitations on spell levels. Dirty, tricky, and hilariously powerful.

… That is positively [Evil]. Why don't I see the abyssal specialist brought up more often?

Because it's impractical. You have to get to Wizard 10, which means wading through dead levels galore, and spend a bunch of feats on Abyssal Heritor feats (only a few of which are any good, and there's not many to begin with).

Realistically, the best way to use it is to be a Grey Elf and use the DCFS to exchange all of your racial proficiencies for AH feats.
