1. Why are assasins limited to melee sneak attacks?

Most of the best assasinations i've ever heard of were ranged.

2. When you get bonus spells from high INT, CHA etc is it spells known or spells per day?

The assasin entry in the SRD has me confused.

1. Because that's how they made things, possibly thinking it'd be too good if you could do it ranged.

2. It's spells/day.

Are assassins limited to melee sneak attack or is it that the death attack can only be used with a melee attack?

The latter.

Ranged death attack... My mind broke.

If the victim sees the assassin watching him for three rounds, the assassin is doing something wrong.

I was thinking more of an greater invisibility using assasin crouched in trees/rooftop with improved/greater manyshot.

The victim doesn't have to know that he is a victim. That's the beauty of the assassin.

It could, potentially, maybe have to do with the religious group who preferred to kill with ceremonial daggers.

...maybe. As that's really reaching for an explanation for it other than it must have seemed overpowered. I think the better answer is indeed that it must've seemed overpowered, but hey. :P
