I know there were some classes that base itself around being linked to and upgrading certain weapons or items. I was wondering if people knew which classes these were and perhaps what feats, skills and races tend to work well with them.

Are you talking of classes like Kensai?

Scion prestige classes (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/magic/legendaryWeapons.htm) from Unearthed Arcana (also OGL and on d20SRD) fit the bill.

There's also Weapons of Legacy and the Legacy Champion.

If you're playing pathfinder, the Bladebound Magus Archetype, paired with kensai if you want exceptional focus on ONE weapon.

You get a magical weapon (with an ego score) which (theoretically) shares your alignment. The weapon progresses in power as you level up, and gains more abilities. Kensai gives you free weapon focus and a bunch of powers increasing dmg with that weapon.

Yea, classes like that mainly.

Interesting, but each class seems dependent of a specific legendary weapon. Not even a case of 'choose your specialized weapon' which is a bit of a let down.

Interesting, I'll give it a look. :)

Those are example items, and the text specifically discusses that you should be comfortable making your own legendary weapons to scion.

EDIT: Also, the Item Familiar (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/magic/itemFamiliars.htm) and Ancestral Relic feats might be of use to you.

There's the... Anointed Knight? It's not that great though.

Wouldn't there certain rules or guidelines to follow though in making your own weapon?

There are, in the actual book. The section that discusses them isn't OGL.

That looks cool, although weak. But one thing that caught my eye is the +50 hp ability you can give the weapon. Are there other ways to do that so a weapon isn't as easily broken?

Well, any mundane weapon which is spiffed up to +5 with a casting of Greater Magic Weapon will get +50 HP, and also +10 hardness.

Artificer can be played like that, if you want to build and upgrade a horde of homunculi.
