Hello!

So, I absolutely love Mind Flayers, and I have always been interested in playing one; so, as I was browsing Savage Species, I came to page 187: it listed a progression chart for Mind Flayers, and I was wondering if I took one level in this at the beginning (the new campaign I am doing is starting at level five), would that work for a Wizard build? Also, does anybody know of any other viable ways to be a Mind Flayer that isn't homebrewed?

Thanks!

Unfortunately, you can't take just a single level of the progressions in Savage Species, you have to take all of the levels in Mind Flayer before you can take even a single level in Wizard.

If you wanted to feel like a Mind Flayer, you could take the Illithid Heritage feats, which would slowly transform you into an illithid. Otherwise your best bet is homebrew. I suggest this one, (http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?PHPSESSID=jgtc760e28vtdkde7e05rhkbb1&topic=9557.msg322757#msg322757) personally.

The Savage Species racial classes do not permit multiclassing until the racial class is complete. So your first wizard level would be at 16th level.

I do not see the point to such a limitation so your DM might change the rules to allow muticlassing from an incomplete racial class.

However the savage species racial classes are, in general, much weaker than normal PCs. As such you might want to use homebrewed racial classes like these (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=7947714&postcount=13)

Edit: Ninja'd

Ask your GM if he's willing to allow you to use gestalt rules for wizard and the illithid's racial hit dice.

If you're using the Psionic version of a Mind Flayer, you could be a 9th level manifester by the end of the progression, which might remove some of the sting.
