I have found no information stating how long a dragon sleeps. Do to this I am assuming that it sleeps for a normal amount of time (8 hours a day, like a Human).

So that begs the question, how long does a 1201 year old dragon sleep over its life time?

8 hours is 1/3 of a day, thus the amount of time you sleep in a 365.25 day year is:
1/3 * 365.25 = 120.5325 days asleep

The dragon is 1201 years old so multiply by 1201
120.5325 * 1201 = 144759.5325 days asleep

Divide by 365.25 days in a year
144759.5 / 365.25 = 396.33 years asleep.

And of course it always wakes up when the PCs are there.

Share any stories about dragons sleeping, or correct me!

Well, actually I believe dragons sleep much much longer than that. As they get old they tend to snooze a lot more.

But, even assuming 8 hours...so what? Humans and dragons will spend 1/3rd of their life asleep dragons just have a lot more life. And it sems pretty reasonable that a dragon would wake up when the PCs show up, considering they've got probably the best set of senses in the entire Monster Manual.

I imagine alot of dragons have not a whole lot to do, say they're 'made dragons' and get food and treasure and such delivered to them daily all they have to do is sit around and bask in thier own power. And what do you do when you have nothing to do all day? Sleep, so they probably do that alot.

Disingenuous statement. A human who lives 80 years sleeps 26.66, using that same math - the exact same proportion - but the amount of time spent asleep overall is entirely irrelevant. Your average human is going to wake up when someone breaks into his house and starts going through his cupboards, too. The only difference is that dragons are much more perceptive of their surroundings, and more easily wakened by intruders.

The default assumption is that dragons sleep for months or years at a stretch (unless woken up), then wake up to rampage and feed for a short time; some are more active, and some are more torpid. Intruders in their lair set off alarms (and alarms; the mental alarm wakes the caster from sleep), make a racket, and probably cause minions to come running to wake the dragon up.

Also, adventurers are more likely to enter the lair of an active dragon than one that has been asleep for the last five years, since active dragons tend to be easier to find.

So, dragons are mafia now?

Talk about a kiss of death. Can you imagine how their breath smells?

IŽd say that the SMELL of a dragons breath is your least problem, once it is targetting you. IŽd be more concerned of (by? with?) the heat turning you into cinders ...:smalleek:

Dragons sleep at the speed of plot. That is, they might as well be sleeping whenever the DM wants them to, and have them wake up whenever the DM wants that too. I'm pretty sure they still need to rest for 8 hours to prepare spells though.

yeah, dragons are always asleep until an adventurer shows up.

Naw man, that's Chuck Norris you are thinking about. Easy mistake though.

If I was a dragon, I'd sleep 14 hours a day straight, get up to eat, roll around in my pile of coppers for exercise, eat again, and then spend the rest of my time reading ancient tomes of forbidden power and the like or naughty dragon literature.

Indeed, but that's "recover spell slots." They're sorcerers by default.

There was a really great topic on what dragons do with their spare time a while back. A few of the more memorable suggestions included waging shadow wars against other dragons and doing human-esque hobbies such as sculpture, origami, and perennial gardening.

I'd probably think "Yeah man, I'm going to read ancient tomes of forbidden power!" and then get distracted by naughty dragon literature. Just like real life... *sigh*

Dragons sleeping?
Something like that.

Where do you think sorcerors and half-dragons come from?

Naughty dragon literature would make for a very interesting read. They must have very perverted minds, considering that some dragon or another has slept with every creature in the multiverse, and those high Int and Cha scores would give them incredible skill with language.

Dragon porn...

Thank you, I need to go bleach my brain now.

Anyway, I do know from the Dragonlance setting, at least, Dragons spend a great deal of their time in magical slumber, but I'm not sure how it translates to the D&D world. Doesn't the Draconomicon have rules on this?

Any creature that polymorphs to procreate is perverted. With all the half-dragons and dragon-blooded folks around, one has to assume that it's a racial trait. It's probably inherited too.

Anyway, dragons probably sleep a lot. They should. They need their strength to thwart stupid burglars!

This... is fantastic. Dragons may spend long periods without mating. So, obviously, they need naughty dragon literature to get them through. But dragons are creatures of class, taste, and distinction. So where does this artistically compelling naughty dragon literature originate?

Ladies, gentlemen: I think we may have found a new prestige class for the bard.

Exotic Smut Artist?

Prerequisites:
Skills: Craft (write), Craft (draw), or Craft (sculpture) 8.
Special: Must have a dirty mind and no self esteem.

I dare anyone to continue that into a class. DARE I say.

Really? It sounded like a skill to me. Didn't Belkar says "I took max ranks in Craft (Disturbing Mental Image) last level"?

Ya know, technically a Half-Dragon is still full dragon type, so it doesn't take a dragon to make a Half-Dragon.

But man, this thread is going downhill fast: dragon smut, dragon smut PrC, what next?

Unfortunately, I imagine it is in much the same way one gets to Carnegie Hall.

While you are coping with that, realize that their less than perfect efforts likely still exist.
