View Full Version : Cloistered Cleric Dip Worth It?

Just thought I would get some quick ideas on what ya'll think of this idea.

Starting a new campaign(it's been too long), and I'm thinking of playing an Elf Generalist/Domain Wizard into an Incantatrix.

Here's where I'm struggling though. I'm toying with the idea of doing a 1st level dip into Cloistered Cleric. Knowledge Devotion/Planning Domain(Extend Spell), and Deathless Domain(to get the Call of the Undying feat). I, obviously won't be going up in this class past 1st level and can't figure out how to make the most of the 3 or 4 Turn Undead attempts I'll have each day.

Can I trade them off for a good alternative class feature? Is it worth a Divine Feat to use them for something? Thoughts?

You can trade your Wizard 5 bonus feat for a domain's granted power per Complete Champion, if you're after a particular domain's power.

Dipping a level of Cloistered Cleric is useful on an Archivist or Druid due to access to Divine Metamagic, and it's useful on any character who primarily makes attack rolls because Knowledge Devotion makes up for the BAB loss. But on an arcane caster, it's not going to be worth it.

Maybe if you can apply your extra prohibited school from Incantatrix to your Cleric casting instead of your Wizard casting, then it may be worthwhile. Even then the loss of one school isn't much of a problem unless you're already a focused specialist. Otherwise it's just not worth the loss of a level of spellcasting.

I hear you, trust me I do, but this isn't necessarily an optimized build. I want the flavor of the Call of the Undying feat and the skill points with the CC. A little healing ability is also going to go a long way in terms of surviving the early levels. I suspect it's going to be pretty brutal and I'm going to have a target on me.

I really just want to do something worthwhile with the turn undead attempts. I've penciled in Divine Vigor for now....

{EDIT} I see what you're saying about the 5th level swap out though, and I'm considering it....

CC can be beneficial to some wizard builds, but I don't see it as beneficial to your build. I think that knowledge devotion does almost nothing for casters (at least casters that don't go around buffed and beat things), extend spell can be taken as bonus wizard feat. Call of the undying isn't so good to lose a caster level for.
The only reason for taking cleric dip (as a wizard) IMHO is if you go focused conjurer and you take artifice and creation with cleric dip as domains to get +3 caster level with conjuration(creation) spells.

I know what you are saying, but this more about flavor than optimization. I've swapped out my 5th level bonus feat(wizard) for Domain Granted Power, as suggested and taken Call of the Undying as my 6th level character feat(happened at the same level). That was a smart move, because I now have full access to the domain due to the 1st level CC dip. I'll have full access to four domains.

This actually frees up another domain to take as a 1st level CC. The +1 CL conjuration for artifice or creation isn't a bad idea, because I'm a Domain Wizard/Conjuration

With the above changes I could add the Travel Devotion at 1st level and the feat Divine Intercession. Which gives me some options for my turn undead attempts that were going to go unused.
