(Premise: A Totemist/Divine Prestige Class, primarily focused on meldshaping alongside a potent animal companion.)

Totem Shaman
"Nature and Magic are one in me." - Sheras Oak-Clan, Totem Shaman.

Savage Gods, Totemic Faiths, and a reverence for Nature and its innate connection to the Magical can all converge upon the axiom of exploring the nature of that which is totally Natural and yet also totally Magical without being Supernatural. The Totem Shaman explores this bond with their animal companion, connecting their souls together and eventually altering their companion's very nature.

Totem Shaman combine a reverence for Nature and its creatures with a knowledge of the powers of Incarnum and a drive to emulate and master the strong spirits of those creatures that exist at the confluence of the natural and supernatural. Seeking to emulate and surpass these spirits they steep themselves in the souls of magical beasts and work to master Nature magics.

Becoming a Totem Shaman: Typically Totem Shaman come from cultures on the edge of civilization, where druidic faiths are common and the traditions of Totemists are more known and practiced. Martially inclinded druids & clerics of Nature or Hunting deities that have been exposed to Totemist lore are most common, followed by Totemists who have been initiated into those faiths. More rarely, other practitioners of divine find themselves drawn to this path after delving into the secrets of Incarnum.

Playing a Totem Shaman: A Totem Shaman molds themselves to attain the easy mastery over themselves and their powers that great predators possess, being at once at confident and at peace with their surroundings and yet also ready to spring into action on a moment’s notice.

Combat: A Totem Shaman primarily engages in melee combat alongside their companions, animal or otherwise, using their magics to alternatively bolster themselves and their allies or undermine their foes. In situations where tearing opponents limb from limb up close is less than feasible, they fall back to relying upon their magic.
Advancement: Typically Totem Shaman continue to advance their meldshaping and spellcasting. [I honestly have no idea what to put here.]

Resources: A Totem Shaman primarily draws upon what they and their animal companion can make or bargain for using their skills and magic. More established Totem Shaman typically hold higher positions in their tribes and may be able to exert further influence. There is no overarching organization or order of Totem Shaman, though smaller orders and lodges form periodically based upon tribal or religious affiliations or geographic convenience.

Totem Shaman in the world
“For all their magic, they’re as beast as man, boon to their allies, and hot, bloody death to those they call enemy,” - Telliver, druid of the Otter lodge.

[I have no idea what to put here.]

Organization: No universal organization of Totem Shaman exists, but a number of smaller orders, lodges, and cabals form and disband and merge together as time goes by, with the most long-standing and successful being those tied to one religion or another, especially the Green Faith of druidism. Most Totem Shaman recognize that they follow a similar path combining their spiritual divine magic with the base of meldshaping, but feel no special loyalty to one another for practicing similar arts.

NPC Reactions: Totem Shaman are typically treated much the same way as either druids or totemists depending upon what of their powers they demonstrate, otherwise they are viewed in much the same way as any member of a tribal or fringe civilization would be, depending upon the attitudes of others.

Totem Shaman Lore:
Characters with either Knowledge(Nature) or Knowledge(Religion) can research Totem Shaman to learn more about them.
DC 10 The Totem Shaman is a divine caster who reveres nature and possesses soul-based powers.
DC 15 The Totem Shaman not only has soul-based powers but has a special bond with an animal companion with whom these powers are shared.
DC 20 The Totem Shaman channels Incarnum and shares it with their animal companion, fundamentally altering the animal into something innately magical.
DC 25 ????
DC 30 ????

Totem Shaman in the Game: Totem Shaman can be used in much the same way as a Totemist with extra tricks and a powerful platform for doubling their use of soulmelds or a Druid who focuses on physicality without the concerns brought up by Wildshaping for combat purposes but still has some extra tricks up their sleeve.

Adaptation: Another ready possibility is progress the druid’s wildshaping capabilities at a reduced rate (say, no plants or elementals, and not the full range of sizes, say Tiny to Large sizes) in lieu of progressing the animal companion. Or, instead of the animal companion for non-druids entering the prestige class, allowing them to add a druid spell of up to one level lower than their maximum spell level to their spell list and spells known every 3 levels. An adaptation for arcane magic users could see the loss of the magical companion template and allowing familiars to receive animal companion benefits in addition to advancing arcane spellcasting and requiring Knowledge (Arcana) instead of Knowledge (Religion) as a prerequisite. Altering this for a non-Totemist meldshaper to enter would be as simple as requiring the ability to bind to any chakra instead of the Totem Chakra and then allow them to receive the rest of their chakra binds at an ECL 3-4 later than they would as a pure meldshaper or as part of the capstone except for maybe the soul chakra which would be granted at the first level of the epic progression.
(15/15 meldshaping, 12/15 casting PrC with Animal Companion)

Skill Points at Each Level: 4 + Int modifier

Class Features:

Weapon and Armor Proficiencies: A Totem Shaman gains no new weapon or armor proficiencies.

Meldshaping: At each Totem Shaman level, you increase your meldshaper level, the number of soulmelds you can shape, the number of chakra binds you can create, and your essentia pool as if you had gained a level in a meldshaping class to which you belonged prior to gaining the Totem Shaman level. You do not, however, gain any other abilities of that class, such as new tiers of chakra binds. If you had more than one meldshaping class before becoming a Totem Shaman, you must decide to which class to add each level for the purpose of determining your essentia pool, meldshaper level, and the number of soulmelds and chakra binds available.

Spellcasting: At each Totem Shaman level except for 5th, 10th, and 15th, the Totem Shaman gains new spells per day and an increase in caster level (and spells known, if applicable) as if they had also gained a level in a spellcasting class to which they belonged before adding the prestige class level. They do not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained. If they had more than one spellcasting class before becoming a Totem Shaman, they must decide to which class to add each level for the purpose of determining spells per day, caster level, and spells known.

Animal Companion (Ex): A Totem Shaman can add their Totem Shaman levels to their effective druid level to determine the capabilities of their animal companion. If they did not already have the ability to acquire an animal companion, they gain one as a 3rd level Druid at their first level of Totem Shaman or gain the benefits of the Wild Cohort feat with the additional effect of being able to share spells with their wild cohort. For Totem Shamans that did not have access to an animal companion upon entering the prestige class, every level of Totem Shaman after the first progresses their effective druid level for animal companion benefits. (For example, a Totemist 2/Cleric 3/Totem Shaman 1 has an effective druid level of 3 for its Animal Companion and a Totemist 2/Cleric 3/Totem Shaman 5 has an effective druid level of 7 for its Animal Companion.)

Wild Empathy (Ex): A Totem Shaman’s class levels stack with other class levels for the purposes of determining their bonus to wild empathy. Additionally, the Totem Shaman does not suffer the -4 penalty for using Wild Empathy on magical beasts.

Totem Chakra Bind: The Totem Shaman continues progressing the Totem Chakra Bind feature of the Totemist Base Class as follows:
At 7th level, the effective meldshaper level of a soulmeld bound to the totem chakra is equal to actual meldshaper level +1. This increases by 1 at 14th level.
At 8th level, the Totem Shaman gains the ability to bind a single soulmeld to their totem chakra and to another chakra at the same time. They gain the special benefits of both chakra binds.
At 13th level, the essentia capacity of any soulmeld bound to the totem chakra increases by an additional point (to +2 above the normal capacity).

Bonus Incarnum Feat: At 1st, 5th, 10th, and 15th level, the Totem Shaman may select one Incarnum feat as a bonus feat. Alternatively, the Totem Shaman may select Bonus Essentia, Double Chakra, Open Least Chakra, Open Lesser Chakra, Open Greater Chakra, Shape Soulmeld, or Split Chakra if they qualify.

Bonus Feat: At 3rd, 6th, 9th, and 12th level, the Totem Shaman receives a bonus feat strengthening the ties between the Totem Shaman and the soul of their animal companion. At 3rd level, the Totem Shaman gains Share Soulmeld(Magic of Incarnum, p. 41) as a bonus feat. At 6th level, the Totem Shaman gains Companion Spellbond(Player's Handbook II, p. 77) as a bonus feat. At 9th level, the Totem Shaman gains Companion Soulbond(new feat (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=16297690&postcount=3)) as a bonus feat. At 12th level, the Totem Shaman gains Natural Bond(Complete Adventurer, p. 111) as a bonus feat.

Magical Companion (Ex): The magic of the Totem Shaman infuses their animal companion through the same bond that connects their souls, altering the nature of their animal companion. At 5th level, a Totem Shaman may apply the Magical Beast template to its animal companion as well as any other animal companion option without decreasing the Totem Shaman's effective druid level for the benefits that the animal companion receives, as well as retaining its services as an animal companion despite its increased intelligence and changed Type.

The now magical beast animal companion may continue to benefit from spells as if it possessed the animal type as well as benefit from feats taken by the Totem Shaman that effect an animal companion. (Aside from the type change and the benefits of the template, the animal companion is still an animal companion despite no longer having the Animal Type anymore.)

Companion Sight (Su): As the bond between souls strengthens, the Totem Shaman and their companion may even see the world through the eyes of each other. At 10th level, a Totem Shaman or their animal companion may concentrate as a standard action to perceive the world through the senses of the other, so long as the Totem Shaman and animal companion are within one mile of one another. As long as the Totem Shaman or animal companion continues to spend a move action to maintain concentration, they may continue to perceive through their animal companion’s senses. While doing so they take a -10 to Spot and Listen checks to perceive what is happening around their own bodies.

At 12th level this becomes a move action to activate and a swift action to maintain concentration, and at 14th level it becomes a swift action to activate and a free action to maintain concentration.

Reshape Soulmelds (Su): At 15th level, a Totem Shaman may take 15 minutes to unshape the soulmelds they currently have shaped and bound and then shape a new selection of soulmelds in their place. They may do this a number of times per day equal to 1 + their Constitution modifier.

Thank you to ~Corvus~ for reminding me to update the tables and doing the legwork too.

Skill Points at Each Level: 4 + Int modifier

Class Features:

Weapon and Armor Proficiencies: A Totem Shaman gains no new weapon or armor proficiencies.

Meldshaping: At each Totem Shaman level, a Totem Shaman increases their meldshaper level, the number of soulmelds they can shape, the number of chakra binds they can create, and their essentia pool as if they had gained a level in a meldshaping class to which they belonged prior to gaining the Totem Shaman level. They do not, however, gain any other abilities of that class, such as new tiers of chakra binds. If they had more than one meldshaping class before becoming a Totem Shaman, they must decide to which class to add each level for the purpose of determining their essentia pool, meldshaper level, and the number of soulmelds and chakra binds available.

Spellcasting: At each Totem Shaman level except for 1st, the Totem Shaman gains new spells per day and an increase in caster level (and spells known, if applicable) as if they had also gained a level in a spellcasting class to which they belonged before adding the prestige class level.

If they did not already have an animal companion, they gain one as a 3rd level Druid at their first level of Totem Shaman or gain the benefits of the Wild Cohort feat with the additional benefit of being able to share spells with their wild cohort as the feature of a Druid's Animal Companion.

Additionally, the Totem Shaman does not suffer any penalties for using Wild Empathy on magical beasts.

Chakra Binds: The Totem Shaman can bind their soulmelds to their chakras, granting themselves new powers based on the soulmeld and chakra chosen. Binding a soulmeld to a chakra closes the body slot associated with that chakra, so that they cannot also benefit from a magic item worn on the body slot associated with that chakra. Beginning at 2nd level, they can bind soulmelds to their crown, feet, or hands chakras. At 4th level, they can bind soulmelds to their arms, brow, or shoulders chakras. At 8th level, they can bind soulmelds to their throat or waist chakras. At 10th level, they can bind a soulmeld to their heart chakra. They never gain the ability to bind a soulmeld to their soul chakra.

Bonus Incarnum Feat: At 1st and 9th level, a Totem Shaman gains a bonus feat with the Incarnum descriptor or that allows them to shape or bind soulmelds.

Bonus Feat: At 3rd and 5th level, the Totem Shaman receives a bonus feat strengthening the ties between the Totem Shaman and the soul of their animal companion. At 3rd level, the Totem Shaman gains Share Soulmeld(Magic of Incarnum, p. 41) as a bonus feat. At 5th level, the Totem Shaman gains Companion Soulbond(new feat (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=16297690&postcount=3)) as a bonus feat.

Totem Chakra Bind: The Totem Shaman progresses their connection with their Totem Chakra in the following ways. At 6th level, the Totem Shaman gains the ability to bind a single soulmeld to their totem chakra and to another chakra at the same time. They gain the special benefits of both chakra binds. At 9th level, the capacity of any soulmeld bound to your totem chakra increases by an additional point (stacking with the 2nd level ability of the Totemist to increase their essentia capacity on soulmelds bound to their totem chakra).

Reshape Soulmelds (Su): A number of times per day equal to 1 + the Totem Shaman’s Charisma Modifier(minimum 1), the Totem Shaman may reshape and rebind their soulmelds as if they were shaping them for the first time that day.

The Totem Fetishist
"My soul is the whirlwind of your reaping."

There are those who become enamored with pseudo-magical and ritual fetishes, but for those who know the secrets of the soul's power, such fetishes can become a powerful focus, though by their nature they require intense, almost singular devotion. Those who have discovered Incarnum and admire the monster in its fury and seek to emulate, even exceed such ferocity as well as Totemists whose devotion to their totems becomes an obsession fall prey to the lure of the Totem Fetishist.

(A sort of "fast progression" ultra-focused meldshaper for those who just want to turn into blenders. Considering a possible clause allowing them to override specific restrictions on the non-standard natural weapons from Totemist soulmelds. Definitely rough around the edges.)

Requirements:
Feats: Shape Soulmeld, Open Least Chakra, 1 [Incarnum] Feat
Skills: Knowledge Arcana 4 ranks, Knowledge Nature 4 ranks

Meldshaping: Ability to bind to Totem Chakra

Class Features:

Totem Fetish: A Totem Fetishist requires a Totem Fetish, which occupies one magical item body slot, typically taking the form of an amulet, mask, or headdress; in order to shape soulmelds. A Totem Fetish requires 1 day and 150 gold pieces to make. Only soulmelds associated with the Totem Fetish may be bound to the Totem Fetishist’s Totem Chakra, and initially only one soulmeld is associated with the Totem Fetish. To associate additional soulmelds with the Totem Fetish, the Totem Fetishist must spend 1 day improving the Totem Fetish, adding additional embellishments and magical materials costing 300 gold pieces per additional soulmeld, this ritual requires only 1 day regardless of how many soulmelds are being associated with the Totem Fetish.

Totem Chakra Bind: At 1st level, a Totem Fetishist gains the ability to bind soulmelds to their Totem Chakra as if they were a 2nd level Totemist. At 3rd and 5th level, the Totem Fetishist gains the ability to bind one additional soulmeld to their Totem Chakra. This ability stacks with the benefits granted by the Double Chakra feat to a maximum of 4 soulmelds bound to the Totem Chakra at 5th level. If they were already capable of binding soulmelds to their Totem Chakra due to possessing Totemist levels, a Totem Fetishist gains an additional chakra bind to their Totem Chakra at every odd level of Totem Fetishist.

Bonus Feats: At 2nd, a Totem Fetishist gains a feat with the [Incarnum] descriptor and Bonus Essentia as bonus feats. At 4th level, a Totem Fetishist gains a feat with the [Incarnum] descriptor and Double Chakra for their Totem Chakra as bonus feats.

Limited Meldshaping: A Totem Fetishist has only limited access to the Totemist’s list of soulmelds, they may choose 3 soulmelds at Totem Fetishist 1 as soulmelds they know, only one of which may grant a natural weapon when bound to the Totem Chakra. Their meldshaper level for their soulmelds is equal to their class level in Totem Fetishist.

Expanded Meldshaping: A Totem Fetishist’s knowledge of Totemic soulmelds increases, they may choose an additional 3 soulmelds known from the Totemist list at Totem Fetishist 3, 2 of which may grant natural weapons when bound to the Totem Chakra. Their meldshaper level for their soulmelds is equal to their class level in Totem Fetishist plus 3.

Full Meldshaping: A Totem Fetishist’s knowledge of Totemic soulmelds is complete, they gain access to all soulmelds from the Totemist list at Totem Fetishist 5. In addition, they may choose one soulmeld not on the Totemist list and gain the ability to shape and bind it. They no longer require a Totem Fetish in order to shape soulmelds. Their meldshaper level for their Totem Fetishist soulmelds is equal to their Character Level.

The Beast Soul Meldshaper
"I am one with the pack, we hunt!"

The study of soulmagic naturally leads to studying the bonds between souls. Suffusing those bonds with further magic strengthens them even as they change. Exploring the bond between man and animal becomes an obsession with becoming one with the pack, with its ultimate conclusion almost resembling a hivemind, man and beast working together as one.

(One part 10/10 meldshaping, one part Beastmaster "as it should have been.")

Skill Points at Each Level: 4 + Int modifier

Class Features:
Weapon and Armor Proficiencies: The Beast Soul Meldshaper gains no new weapon or armor proficiencies.

Wild Empathy (Ex): A Beast Soul Meldshaper can improve the attitude of an animal. See the druid class feature, page 35 of the Player's Handbook. If a Beast Soul Meldshaper has wild empathy from another class, their levels stack for determining the bonus.

Meldshaping: At each Beast Soul Meldshaper level, a Beast Soul Meldshaper increases their meldshaper level, the number of soulmelds they can shape, the number of chakra binds they can create, and their essentia pool as if they had gained a level in a meldshaping class to which they belonged prior to gaining the Beast Soul Meldshaper level. They do not, however, gain any other abilities of that class, such as new tiers of chakra binds. If they had more than one meldshaping class before becoming a Beast Soul Meldshaper, they must decide to which class to add each level for the purpose of determining their essentia pool, meldshaper level, and the number of soulmelds and chakra binds available.

Animal Companion: A Beast Soul Meldshaper gains the service of a loyal animal companion. See the druid class feature, pages 35—36 of the Player's Handbook. Treat the Beast Soul Meldshaper as a druid whose level is equal to the Beast Soul Meldshaper's class level + 3. A Beast Soul Meldshaper can select one of the animals available to a 1st-level druid and then apply the modifications as appropriate for a 4th-level druid's animal companion, or they can select a typical version of one of the animals available to a 4th-level druid.

As a Beast Soul Meldshaper gains class levels, their animal companion gains Hit Dice and other special abilities just as a druid's animal companion does. Use the Beast Soul Meldshaper's class level + 3 to determine the animal companion's special abilities. If a Beast Soul Meldshaper already has an animal companion from another class, their Beast Soul Meldshaper class levels stack with class levels from all other classes that grant an animal companion. For example, a 5th-level Druid/2nd-level Beast Soul Meldshaper would be treated as a 10th-level Druid for the purpose of improving the statistics of their animal companion (and which alternative animal companions she could select).

Magical Companion: The Beast Soul Meldshaper’s animal companion gains the benefits of the Magical Creature template, but continues to benefit from spells targeting animals and functions as an animal companion in addition to benefiting from feats that modify animal companions normally, with a -2 penalty to effective druid level for animal companion benefits, at 5th level this penalty decreases to -1 and at 10th level this penalty is eliminated. At 8th level, they may apply the template to their wild cohorts gained through the Wild Cohort feat as well.

Chakra Binds: The Beast Soul Meldshaper can bind their soulmelds to their chakras, granting themselves new powers based on the soulmeld and chakra chosen. Binding a soulmeld to a chakra closes the body slot associated with that chakra (see Chakras, page 50), so that they cannot also benefit from a magic item worn on the body slot associated with that chakra.

Expanded Soulbond: The Beast Soul Meldshaper may share the benefits of its Incarnum feats and class features with its Animal Companions and wild cohorts, which form its pack. Feats that affect the animal companion may also apply to the Beast Soul Meldshaper’s wild cohorts, such as Exalted Companion or Natural Bond. They also gain the ability to telepathically communicate with one another within one mile. The bonuses members of the pack grant one another for flanking are doubled.

Bonus Feats: At 1st level, the Beast Soul Meldshaper gains Companion Soulbond as a bonus feat. At 3rd, 6th, and 9th level, the Beast Soul Meldshaper gains the Wild Cohort feat. This is an exception to the limitation on number of times that the feat may normally be taken and the limitation on the number of wild cohorts that a character may possess at one time. At 6th level, if the Beast Soul Meldshaper possesses the Wild Cohort feat from a source other than Beast Soul Meldshaper, they may instead select any feat they qualify for as their bonus feat for 6th level Beast Soul Meldshaper.

Packsight (Su): At 7th level, the Beast Soul Meldshaper, their animal companions, and their wild cohorts may share sensory information with one another. If one member of the soulbond sees a creature, they all count as seeing the creature. As a swift action the Beast Soul Meldshaper or any of their animal companions or wild cohorts may focus upon the specific sensory information of one of the other creatures in the Beast Soul Meldshaper’s pack.

Companion Ascension: The Beast Soul Meldshaper’s wild cohorts become Animal Companions with the Beast Soul Meldshaper’s Character Level - 6 (Natural Bond will raise this to Character Level -3) as the effective druid level for their animal companion benefits. Alternatively, the Beast Soul Meldshaper’s wild cohorts and animal companion may benefit from the benefits conferred by the Urban Companion ACF without losing their wild cohort or animal companion benefits, such as bonus HD.

Adaptation: To progress spellcasting as well, give only 2 wild cohorts at 3rd and 6th level and they may not benefit from the Urban Companion option of Companion Ascension. Additionally the ability to cast 2nd level spells is required as a prerequisite and they advance their spellcasting at each level but 1st, 4th, and 7th level for 7/10 casting.

Skill Points at Each Level: 4 + Int modifier

Class Features:

Weapon and Armor Proficiencies: The Twinsoul Shaper gains no new weapon or armor proficiencies.

Spellcasting: At each Twinsoul Shaper level except for 1st, and 4th, the Twinsoul Shaper gains new spells per day and an increase in caster level (and spells known, if applicable) as if they had also gained a level in a spellcasting class to which they belonged before adding the prestige class level. They do not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained. If they had more than one spellcasting class before becoming a Twinsoul Shaper, they must decide to which class to add each level for the purpose of determining spells per day, caster level, and spells known.

Meldshaping: At each Twinsoul Shaper level, a Twinsoul Shaper increases their meldshaper level, the number of soulmelds they can shape, the number of chakra binds they can create, and their essentia pool as if they had gained a level in a meldshaping class to which they belonged prior to gaining the Twinsoul Shaper level. They do not, however, gain any other abilities of that class, such as new tiers of chakra binds. If they had more than one meldshaping class before becoming a Twinsoul Shaper, they must decide to which class to add each level for the purpose of determining their essentia pool, meldshaper level, and the number of soulmelds and chakra binds available.

Animal Companion: A Twinsoul Shaper gains the service of a loyal animal companion. See the druid class feature, pages 35—36 of the Player's Handbook. Treat the Twinsoul Shaper as a druid whose level is equal to the Twinsoul Shaper's class level + 3. At 5th level this improves to a +6 bonus to effective druid level and at 10th level this improves to a +9 bonus to effective druid level. A Twinsoul Shaper can select one of the animals available to a 1st-level druid and then apply the modifications as appropriate for a 4th-level druid's animal companion, or they can select a typical version of one of the animals available to a 4th-level druid.

As a Twinsoul Shaper gains class levels, their animal companion gains Hit Dice and other special abilities just as a druid's animal companion does. Use the Twinsoul Shaper's class level + 3 to determine the animal companion's special abilities, increasing this bonus by 3 at 5th and 10th level. If a Twinsoul Shaper already has an animal companion from another class, their Twinsoul Shaper class levels stack with class levels from all other classes that grant an animal companion. For example, a 5th-level Druid/2nd-level Twinsoul Shaper would be treated as a 10th-level Druid for the purpose of improving the statistics of their animal companion (and which alternative animal companions she could select).

Wild Empathy (Ex): A Twinsoul Shaper can improve the attitude of an animal. See the druid class feature, page 35 of the Player's Handbook. If a Twinsoul Shaper has wild empathy from another class, their levels stack for determining the bonus.

Magical Companion: The Twinsoul Shaper’s animal companion gains the benefits of the Magical Creature template, but continues to benefit from spells targeting animals and functions as an animal companion in addition to benefiting from feats that modify animal companions normally, with a -2 penalty to effective druid level for animal companion benefits. At 5th level, the -2 penalty to effective druid level due to the Magical Creature template changes to a -1 penalty and at 10th level, the penalty is eliminated entirely. At 1st, 3rd, 6th, and 9th Twinsoul Shaper level, the Animal Companion may gain 1 Magical Beast RHD or increase one ability score by one as if by leveling up.

Chakra Binds: The Twinsoul Shaper can bind their soulmelds to their chakras, granting themselves new powers based on the soulmeld and chakra chosen. Binding a soulmeld to a chakra closes the body slot associated with that chakra (see Chakras, page 50), so that they cannot also benefit from a magic item worn on the body slot associated with that chakra.

Bonus Feats: At 3rd level, the Twinsoul Shaper gains Companion Soulbond as a bonus feat. At 9th level, the Twinsoul Shaper gains Companion Soulbond, Greater as a bonus feat.

Warbeast: At 3rd level, the Twinsoul Shaper may apply the Warbeast template to their animal companion without expendng time, even if their animal companion does not qualify for the template.

Expanded Soulbond: At 5th level, the Twinsoul Shaper may share the benefits of its Incarnum feats and class features which require essentia investment with its Animal Companion and all creatures that the Twinsoul Shaper may share spells with benefit from the Companion Soulbond feat. The Twinsoul Shaper and their companion may telepathically communicate as long as they are within 1 mile of one another.

Familiar Soulbond: At 6th level, the Twinsoul Shaper may extend its Animal Companion benefits as if it were also a familiar with the following modifications:
The Animal Companion may use either its BAB or the BAB of the Twinsoul Shaper, but uses its own ability scores for attack and damage rolls.
The Animal Companion retains its own HP and adds ½ the HP of the Twinsoul Shaper to its max HP.
The Animal Companion may choose to use either its own skill ranks or the skill ranks of the Twinsoul Shaper.
The Animal Companion uses either its own intelligence score or that indicated by the Twinsoul Shaper’s level for familiar benefits, whichever is higher.

For purposes of being the master of the animal companion for Urban Companion, the Twinsoul Shaper uses their character level rather than their class level.

Companion Sight(Su): At 6th level, a Twinsoul Shaper or its animal companion may concentrate as a swift action to perceive the world through the senses of the other, so long as they are within one mile of each other. As long as they continue to spend a swift action to maintain concentration, they may continue to perceive through the other’s senses. While doing so they take a -10 to Spot and Listen checks to perceive what is happening around their own bodies.

Completed Soulbond: At 10th level, the Twinsoul Shaper and its Animal Companion become completely linked, even their life force, with the result that they share a single pool of HP equal to the maximum HP of both creatures combined as long as they remain on the same plane. As long as they are on the same plane, any effect that would result in the death of one of them instead leaves both the Twinsoul Shaper and their Animal Companion stable at -10 HP, though if the effect targets both the Twinsoul Shaper and their Animal Companion or if they are already at -10 HP, they both die. Their personalities remain distinct, though they view the thought of turning on one another as anathema and treat such as though it were a suicidal act, gaining a +5 bonus on any saves to resist effects that would cause them to turn on or harm one another. A number of times per day equal to their constitution modifier, the Twinsoul Shaper or their companion may choose to emulate a mental ability score of the other for one minute as an immediate action.

Additionally, the Animal Companion may count as a cohort as if the Twinsoul Shaper possessed the Leadership feat, with the Animal Companion counting as having an ECL 6 levels lower than its RHD and LA would indicate for the purposes of level. The Animal Companion may trade up to ¼ of its RHD in for class levels. The Twinsoul Shaper does not gain any other benefits of the Leadership feat, but if they already possess the Leadership feat or later gain it, they may gain Animals with the Magical Creature template as followers as if they didn’t possess a level adjustment.

The Psycarnum Beastmaster
"We are of one mind when it comes to your pain." - Vargas Aldoon, Psycarnum Beastmaster, Initiate of the Brotherhood of the Melded Mind

The lines between mind and soul sometimes blur as one studies them. For these mentalists, the line has been all but erased as they've merged with their companions to form a hivemind of sorts, freely sharing their usage of Psionics and Incarnum with one another and working in fluid harmony with one another.
(A 7/10 Meldshaping, 7/10 Psionics PrC with a strong bond with an animal companion much like the Twinsoul Shaper)
Becoming a Psycarnum Beastmaster

Those who have studied Incarnum, Psionics, and their fusion, Psycarnum, and who have a connection to Nature find a ready source of further study and experimentation in the bonds between themselves and their companions. As they strengthen the bonds of their psychic powers and meldshaping, they find a unity or hivemind forming from their connection.

Playing a Psycarnum Beastmaster

A Psycarnum Beastmaster doesn't play much differently from either a Totemist or Psychic warrior, save for the addition of a companion allowing one to not only double one's capabilities but also to eventually be in two places at once.

Combat - Psycarnum Beastmasters primarily operate in melee alongside their companion, sometimes pulling out pincer attacks and ambushes using their mental connection. Their meldshaping is primarily bent towards stealth and bolstering their combat prowess while their psionic powers are reserved for an as-needed basis, but primarily serving to make the Psycarnum Beastmaster and their companion all the more formidable or helping to control the battlefield.

Advancement - Most Psycarnum Beastmasters concentrate on their psionics after advancing through the prestige class. Primarily the Psycarnum Beastmaster is strengthening their meldshaping and psionics abilities as a result of exploring and strengthening their connection with their companion which in turn also increases the capabilities of their companion.

Resources - There is a loose organization of psychics interested in studying hiveminds that some Psycarnum Beastmasters associate with which provides information on how one can become a Psycarnum Beastmaster. Even those that do associate with the organization, the Brotherhood of the Melded Mind, do so on a mostly casual, intermittent basis due to the eccentricities and loner tendencies that are exacerbated by becoming one with the mind of an animal even as one uplifts that mind to true sapience.

Psycarnum Beastmasters in the World
"I still can't tell if the man has become feral or if the beast has been enlightened." - Koras Silvereyes, Research-Telepath of the Brotherhood of the Melded Mind

Psycarnum Beastmasters occupy much the same place in the world as their psionic fellows, but with an accent of the exotic due to their companions that turns eccentric, even frightening to some laymen as they merge further with their bonded animal.

Organization - Most Psycarnum Beastmasters are not affiliated beyond coincidental associations within unrelated and disparate orders and cabals, but the largest grouping is probably those whose tradition originates with the Brotherhood of the Melded Mind, a group fascinated by the study of shared consciousness, psicrystals, familiars, and hiveminds. The Brotherhood actively shares what information it has on the safer techniques that allow one to share consciousness in exchange for individuals' research and studying those who undergo the process in order to refine the techniques involved and find a more purely psionics-based route to such a union. As a result of this sharing of information, many Psycarnum Beastmasters who haven't heard of the Brotherhood are nonetheless descended from its tradition.

NPC Reactions - At first most NPCs won't be able to tell a Psycarnum Beastmaster from a druid who dabbled in psionics or a psionicist who dabbled in druidism, but as the bond increases, so does the eccentricity, which leads to unease or even fear in laymen, and curiosity in those of a more scholarly bent. Some Psionicists actively look down upon and disdain Psycarnum Beastmasters for looking outward for power in the bonds they share rather than looking solely within themselves.

Psycarnum Beastmaster Lore:
DC 10 - Some psychics bond with animals much like druids can, Psycarnum Beastmasters are some of them.
DC 15 - There is an order, the Brotherhood of the Melded Mind, which promotes study of shared consciousness and teaches those interested how to become Psycarnum Beastmasters
DC 20 - Not only are there bonds between the Psycarnum Beastmaster's mind and the companion's, but also between their souls, but all for that they're not quite completely one despite how often they come to consensus.
DC 25 - ???
DC 30 - ???

Psycarnum Beastmasters in the Game

Psycarnum Beastmasters are a mixture of Druid, Totemist/Psychci Warrior, and whatever psychic based was used to enter. They can offer two villains or allies for the price of one character.

Adaptations An obvious one would be to have a version that more resembles the Beastmaster with its multiple animal companions instead of one stronger one, but with a weaker hivemind much like the difference between the Twinsoul Shaper and the Beastsoul Meldshaper (which are essentially just variants of the same Prestige Class idea which in turn are variants upon the idea of the Totem Shaman). A more extreme adaptation would be to make a pure Psychic Warrior/Totemist hybrid prestige class without the companion, but lessening the restrictions on powers and soulmelds so that their natural weapons work together with greater synergy.

Class Features:

Weapon and Armor Proficiencies: The Psycarnum Beastmaster gains no new weapon or armor proficiencies.

Chakra Binds: The Psycarnum Beastmaster can bind their soulmelds to their chakras, granting themselves new powers based on the soulmeld and chakra chosen. Binding a soulmeld to a chakra closes the body slot associated with that chakra (see Chakras, page 50), so that they cannot also benefit from a magic item worn on the body slot associated with that chakra.

Powers Known: At each Psycarnum Beastmaster level, except for 3rd, 6th, and 9th, a Psycarnum Beastmaster gains additional power points per day and access to new powers as if they had also gained a level in whatever manifesting class they belonged to before they added the prestige class. They do not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained. This essentially means that they add the level of Psycarnum Beastmaster to the level of whatever manifesting class the character has, then determines power points per day, powers known, and manifester level accordingly.

If a character had more than one manifesting class before they became a Psycarnum Beastmaster, they must decide to which class they add the new level of Psycarnum Beastmaster for the purpose of determining power points per day, powers known, and manifester level.

Meldshaping: At each Psycarnum Beastmaster level, except for 1st, 5th, and 10th, a Psycarnum Beastmaster increases their meldshaper level, the number of soulmelds they can shape, the number of chakra binds they can create, and their essentia pool as if they had gained a level in a meldshaping class to which they belonged prior to gaining the Psycarnum Beastmaster level. They do not, however, gain any other abilities of that class, such as new tiers of chakra binds. If they had more than one meldshaping class before becoming a Psycarnum Beastmaster, they must decide to which class to add each level for the purpose of determining their essentia pool, meldshaper level, and the number of soulmelds and chakra binds available. If they have no levels in a meldshaping class prior to entering Psycarnum Beastmaster, then they are treated as Totemists for increasing their essentia pool, number of chakra binds, and number of soulmelds they can shape with levels of Psycarnum Beastmaster.

Psicrystal Infusion (Su): The Animal Companion has a partially activated psicrystal embedded somewhere in its head, typically in its forehead. This blends one of the aspects of the Psycarnum Beastmaster’s personality with that of the animal companion, changing its type to Magical Beast and giving it the ability to speak. The Animal Companion’s base Intelligence ability score increases to 6 and it gains the Intelligence Adj.(Intelligence Adjustment) ability of a psicrystal. It also gains the Share Powers ability of a psicrystal, and a limited form of the Personality ability of a psicrystal which differs from a psicrystal in that the specific personality is blended with that of the base creature and the master does not receive a bonus on skill checks or saving throws from the personality chosen.

The Animal Companion’s class skills are the same as the base creature with the addition of Listen, Search, Speak Language, Spot, and Survival if they did not already possess them as class skills.

Animal Companion: Psycarnum Beastmaster progresses Animal Companion. If the character did not have an animal companion before entering Psycarnum Beastmaster, their wild cohort becomes an Animal Companion at Effective Druid Level 4 and then progresses normally with subsequent Psycarnum Beastmaster levels. Despite no longer having the Animal Type and having an Intelligence greater than 3, the Animal Companion continues to gain Animal Companion benefits.

Wild Empathy (Ex): A Psycarnum Beastmaster can improve the attitude of an animal. See the druid class feature, page 35 of the Player's Handbook. If a Psycarnum Beastmaster has wild empathy from another class, their levels stack for determining the bonus.

Bonus Feats: At 2nd level, a Psycarnum Beastmaster gains Share Soulmelds as a bonus feat. At 3rd level, a Psycarnum Beastmaster gains Companion Soulbond as a bonus feat.

Phrenic Companion(Su): The Animal Companion now counts as a Psicrystal in addition to being an Animal Companion, with the following exceptions: the creature does not gain the Self-Propulsion or Flight abilities, its max HP is not set at half its master’s max HP, it does not receive bonus HD equal to the master’s HD, it may use either its own base saves or its master’s base saves, it may invest its own skill points into skill ranks in addition to using the master’s skill ranks, and despite lacking the self-propulsion ability of a psicrystal the Phrenic Companion retains its Strength and Dexterity ability scores.

The master now receives the full bonus on either skill checks or saving throws appropriate to the personality chosen when the Personality ability was conferred upon the Animal Companion by the Psicrystal Infusion class feature. [Any psicrystal abilities provided by Psicrystal Infusion are only received once]

The Phrenic Companion gains 3 skills as class skills of the master’s choosing from the master’s own class skills.

Expanded Soulbond(Su): The Psycarnum Beastmaster may share the benefits of its Incarnum feats and class features with its Phrenic Companion. The Phrenic Companion also gains bonus HD equal to the master’s HD as a Psicrystal.

Companion Sight(Su): At 6th level, a Psycarnum Beastmaster or their animal companion may concentrate as a swift action to perceive the world through the senses of the other, so long as they are within one mile of each other. As long as they continue to spend a swift action to maintain concentration, they may continue to perceive through the other’s senses. While doing so the one making use of the other’s senses takes a -10 to Spot and Listen checks to perceive what is happening around their own body.

Secondary Manifesting(Ex): The Phrenic Companion gains manifesting as a Psychic Warrior of half the master’s Psycarnum Beastmaster class level. At Psycarnum Beastmaster 10, this improves to manifesting as a Psychic Warrior of half the master’s Character Level.

Gestalt Consciousness(Su): The Phrenic Companion and its master have their minds and souls blended together in a gestalt within which both still exist, but the two are in tandem that they appear as one entity to outsiders, with the Psycarnum Beastmaster’s personality in a dominant position. Both Phrenic Companion and Psycarnum Beastmaster benefit from Companion Sight without penalty as long as they are on the same plane, and may perceive through the other body’s senses with a -10 penalty to Spot and Listen checks and full-round action to initiate and a swift action to maintain the connection each round. The Phrenic Companion and its master may also exchange power points at a rate of expending 3 power points for every 2 power points that are received. A power that either manifests or a soulmeld either shapes may be shared with the other as long as they are within 1 mile. Their telepathic link improves to allow communication as long as they’re on the same plane, and once per day they may make a DC 25 Manifester Level check to use their telepathic link across planar boundaries for up to 1 hour according to the timeflow of whichever plane has the faster time flow.

New Feats
Companion Soulbond
Type: General
You can share soulmelds across greater distances.
Prerequisite: The Share Soulmeld feat; Ability to shape soulmelds and a familiar, animal companion, or mount with whom you can share spells.
Benefit: At your option, any soulmelds shaped by you and currently affecting you can also affect your familiar, animal companion, or mount. The creature in question must remain within 30 feet of you to receive the benefit. If the creature leaves this radius of effect, it loses the benefits of the soulmeld until such time as it returns within 30 feet. All creatures which may benefit from this ability, such as if a character had a familiar and an animal companion, may do so simultaneously.

Companion Soulbond, Greater
Type: General
You can share soulmelds across vast distances.
Prerequisite: The Companion Soulbond feat
Benefit: At your option, any soulmelds shaped by you and currently affecting you can also affect your familiar, animal companion, or mount. The creature in question must remain within 1 mile of you to receive the benefit. If the creature leaves this radius of effect, it loses the benefits of the soulmeld until such time as it returns within 60 feet. All creatures which may benefit from this ability, such as if a character had a familiar and an animal companion, may do so simultaneously.

"A character with this feat may summon a new wild cohort to replace an existing wild cohort in the same manner a druid summons a new animal companion."

Share Soulmeld
Insert the following line to Share Soulmeld: "Any creature, such as a psicrystal, with whom one may share powers may benefit from this feat's ability to share soulmelds."

At 10 HD, a Magical Creature's natural weapons may effect incorporeal creatures as if they were magical weapons with a +1 enhancement bonus. At 15 HD, a Magical Creature's natural weapons all gain a +1 enhancement bonus to attack and damage.

Darkvision (Ex): A Magical Creature gains 30 feet of Darkvision which improves to 60 feet of Darkvision at 6 HD, 90 feet of Darkvision at 11 HD, and 120 feet of Darkvision at 21 HD.

Magic in the Blood (Su): A Magical Creature's changes pass onto its progeny. For the purposes of breeding, an animal that was the subject of an Awaken spell counts as a Magical Creature.

If two Magical Creatures mate, their offspring will inherit the template, with the exception that Intelligence and Charisma are generated as normal(Whether that be by rolling, point buy, or choosing an array) with a +2 to each rather than set at 2 and then increased by 4(or changed to be 4+3d4).
If a Magical Creature mates with a Magebred example of the base creature, then there is an equal 33% chance that each offspring is Magebred, a Magical Creature, or inherits both templates, with a 1% chance that the offspring is a throwback to the base creature without templates.
If a Magical Creature mates with a normal example of the base creature, there is a 50% chance that a Magebred creature is the result, a 25% chance that a Magical Creature is the result, and a 25% chance that the offspring is a normal example of the base creature.

Abilities:
Int+4, Cha+4 (For a higher powered variant, Intelligence and Charisma both change to 4+3d4)

Environment:
Any

Challenge Rating:
HD 3 or less, as base creature; HD 4 to 7, as base creature +1; HD 8 to 24, as base creature +2; HD 24 or more, as base creature +3

Alignment:
Any, tending towards Neutrality along at least one axis.

Level Adjustment:
+1 (cohort only)

Special: When casting the Awaken spell on an animal, a Druid may instead choose to apply the Magical Creature template.

Totem Devotee

Those who are unable to fully adopt the mantle of meldshaper may still find a path to Incarnum through their physical bodies, changing themselves to a more primal, ferocious state. While lacking the versatility of a true Totemist, these devotees can still rip the faces off of the unprepared.

Natural Weapons: A "Totem Devotee" gains the ability to alter their physical form with Incarnum, gaining the ability to form 2 claws with 1d4 damage at 1st level, 1 Bite with 1d6 damage at 5th level, 1 Gore attack with 1d6 damage from a pair of horns at 10th level, 1 Tail Slap attack with 1d8 damage from a tail at 15th level, 2 Wing Buffet attacks with 1d8 damage from a pair of wings at 19th level, and either 2 Slams or 2 Claws with 1d8 damage from a pair of specialized limbs incapable of using tools or holding objects grown for the task at 20th level.

At 12th level and 18th level, all Natural Weapons the "Totem Devotee" possesses, whether from race, feats, or class levels, increase in damage as if the "Totem Devotee" increased in size category by one size category.

Growing or retracting the natural weapons requires a full-round action and provokes an attack of opportunity with the exception of the Wing Buffets, which are tied to the wings from the Flight class feature and do not grow or retract with the rest of the natural weapons.

Breath Weapon: At 2nd level a "Totem Devotee" gains a breath weapon, usable as a standard action, that deals 1d6 points of Fire damage to a single target within 50 feet. At 4th level the damage improves to 3d4, at 9th the damage improves to 6d4, at 13th the damage improves to 9d4, and at 16th the damage improves to 12d4.

Instead of only effecting a single target, the "Totem Devotee" may choose to instead shape their breath weapon into a 15' Cone at 4th level(improving to a 30' Cone at 14th level), a 20' Burst anywhere within 60' at 9th level(improving to a 40' Burst anywhere within 100' at 16th level), or a 40' Line at 13th level(improving to a 80' Line at 17th level).

The "Totem Devotee" also gains access to more energy types as they progress, gaining the ability to choose to deal Cold damage instead of Fire damage at level 4, Acid damage at level 9, and Electricity damage at level 13.

Bonus Feat(Bonus Essentia): At 3rd level, a "Totem Devotee" gains Bonus Essentia as a bonus feat.

Pounce: At 6th level, a "Totem Devotee" may attack with all of their natural weapons(including unarmed strikes) as part of a charge.

Flight: At 7th level, a "Totem Devotee" gains the ability to grow a pair of wings conferring a Fly speed of 20' with Clumsy maneuverability. At 11th level this Fly speed improves to 30' and maneuverability improves to Poor, at 14th level Fly speed improves to 40' and maneuverability to Average, and at 17th level Fly Speed improves to 50' and to Good.

Growing or retracting the wings requires 1 round and provokes an attack of opportunity.

Invest Essentia: A “Totem Devotee” may choose to allocate their essentia to their natural weapons(including unarmed strikes), breath weapon, or their natural armor as a swift action; gaining a +X bonus to attack and damage with their natural weapons equal to the essentia invested that functions in all ways like the equivalent bonus on a magical weapon, a bonus to their breath weapon damage of +1d6 per essentia invested and an increase to all ranges(including the length of Line shaped breath weapons) by 10' per essentia invested, or a +X bonus to AC equal to twice the essentia invested.

[Thoughts: I may just axe the breath weapon, since I sorta caught a case of "I hate having empty spots in the table." Flight may need to be tuned down. The rate of progression could do with neatening up. Probably too many natural attacks. Enhancing the breath weapon may make it too potent.]

Something of note, from my perspective, I've intentionally loaded both versions of the prestige class to the gills under the assumption that it's better and easier to condense and excise than it is to have to come up with something new to fill a gap during the editing phase.

I still think it's weaker than, say, Lion of Talisid though, but I'm not a veteran of Incarnum.

A prestige class after my heart. I initially thought it might be problematic only getting to 7th-level Druid spells with the 15-level prestige class, but that one is more tilted towards Meldshaping, and the 10th-level one will reach 9th level spells, so all is good. Over all, this is fantastic! I'm going to use these :smallcool:

The Magical Creature template more than makes up for the two-level loss from Totemist either way.

Regarding the Bonus Feat at 3rd, 6th, and 9th level, you state that the Totem Shaman receives a bonus feat "strengthening its ties with its animal companion." This is incredibly vague. There are no references, limitations, or suggestions here. Please rectify that.

I haven't found anything else to nitpick. I am adding this to my collection of awesome home-brews.

Hmm, did I do my math wrong? Totemist 2/Druid 3/Totem Shaman 15 loses 2 levels for Totemist and then 3 levels for Totem Shaman for Druid 15 casting, that should get them 8th level spells.

Especially since as the class currently exists, the only thing they really lose out on are the meldshaping progression of Totemist 17-20,. the Totemist capstone, Totem's Protection(in the 15 level version), and a couple uses of rebind totem soulmeld(or all of them in the 10 level version), it seemed like they had to lose out something on the casting side, aside from the 2 levels of Totemist for the 15 level PrC or the 3 levels of Totemist for the 10 level PrC. (edit: If anything it feels like I probably need to have it lose more casting or meldshaping or binds or something... Maybe an additional level of casting lost at 1st for the 15 level version so it is lowered down to 7th level spells as its maximum pre-epic)

Though the 10 level PrC is more like adding a splash of Totemist onto a caster than theurging them together... Hmm, might make something like that which just adds some meldshaping onto a non-meldshaping chassis instead of being a multiclass/theurge prestige class.

Not sure about whether Totemist 3/Druid or Cleric 3 entry for the 10 level version of the PrC is a good point of departure from the 15 level version though, as I'm reminded by your comment about the 10 level version being eligible for 9th level spells(Losing 4 levels of casting should have them at 16th level Cleric or Druid casting).

I was toying between Totemist 2/Druid 3 entry with 8/10 casting progression or Totemist 3/Druid 3 entry with 9/10 casting progression for it, but I think I'll go ahead and drop the 10 level PrC down to Totemist 2/Druid or Cleric 3 entry and break up the access to chakra binds. I was considering getting rid of the heart bind, though there's not that many soulmelds a Totemist can bind to the heart chakra anyway, so it's not that much of a thing to lose out on either.

I think I'll also play around with getting rid of the rebind totem soulmeld on the 15 level version and just spread out the chakra binds, possibly by giving crown separate from hands and feet and then something similar to split up brow from arms and shoulders.

Also figure out what I was doing with that random Bonus Incarnum Feat at 12th level. Maybe change that to Natural Bond, since it'd fit in with the other animal-companion related bonus feats... Yeah, that's what I'll do.

Also just went ahead and added a little bit of fluff to the bond between Totem Shaman and animal companion as well as altered Companion Sight to work both ways.

The Magical Creature template more than makes up for the two-level loss from Totemist either way.

That's probably the area I'm most uncertain about, since it's just a type change, but that "just a type change" gives, essentially a pet fighter without bonus feats due to the better HD and full BAB. I figured giving them DR/Epic once they've hit epic levels is more throwing them a bone than really increasing their power, but I'm not certain about that.

The wording on actually applying the template and its interaction with animal companions are something I'm really nervous about, so I just went back and tried to tweak it, but I think I just made it more cumbersome, aside from the parenthetical clarification. :/

Oh, right, sorry, I was specifying those as separate from the Incarnum bonus feats and forgot that I only had them explicitly called out in the table. Wording feels a bit awkward still, but it should be clarified/fixed now.

Thank you very much. I was a bit worried that it was both horribly unbalanced and yet also too boring to be worth commenting upon how bad it was for a moment there. :smalleek:

Edit: Tried breaking up the chakra binds down to a one chakra bind per level format on the 10 level version, just didn't look right though, so I think I'll leave the progression as-is on that one, still undecided on the heart chakra, though dropping down to a Totemist 2/Caster 3 entry means they get it at 15th level, which is 2 earlier than straight Totemist would get it, at 17th level.

Look up the Warbeast template. Spectacularly awesome.

The transformation from a d8 to a d10 and 3/4 to full BAB makes up for a two-level loss, significantly. And the fact that it becomes a Magical Beast means it can learn languages and get feats and...

Progress/Updates: I've just put up a crude mock-up/first draft of a fast-progression Totemist-ish Prestige Class modeled after the idea I had while replying to ~Corvus~ earlier.

I've also expanded the Magical Creature template and eliminated the crude pseudo-table from where I copy-pasta'd from celestial creature and then rejiggered it.

Also did some minor editing, mostly of typographical and formatting errors.

I also realized that despite originally being intended to be a Divine/Totemist Prestige Class, I've left it wide open for an arcane caster to enter and pick up an animal companion. :smallconfused:

I also realize that I don't really see any downsides to that. :smallamused: But I've stayed up later than I intended working on this so I might not be seeing as well as I could with less foggy brainmeats.

Ah, I know that feeling far too well. Which is part of why it wouldn't be the first time I'd have managed to miscalculate what level of spells a character would have access to even while counting it out by hand/in text. XD

Yeah... whenever I look at splitting them up it just doesn't feel right anyway, so I'll just leave those alone until someone presents a convincing argument as for what to do with them instead. Right now there should at least be a delay on when a Totem Shaman gets chakra binds compared to a straight Totemist of around 1-3 levels, and I don't really want to delay them much more than that due to the way the abilities offered by those chakra binds seems to tend to being less appropriate the further up in level they get from when Totemists would get them. Aside from some of the breath weapon chakra binds which seem to largely get panned for being too low damage at too high of a level...

Warbeast is a rather fun template, aye. Is there something in particular I should refresh myself on about it though?

Indeed, I'll add that in after I get up tomorrow. Or were you talking about something other than effective druid level for the animal companion that possessed the template?

I expanded and clarified the template a little bit tonight, though mostly it boils down to letting them hit ghosts as if they had +1 weapons and then actually having +1 weapons as well as making them less vulnerable to 1-hit KO's from Charisma Damage/Drain.

I was calling, in particular, the only real template that has made a loss of effective Druid level worth it. This creature's transformation makes the loss of effective druid level more than worth it, too. I mean, heck, SHARE SOULMELDS?!? This class doesn't get any 6th-level feats; it gets Share Soulmeld and Greater Share soulmeld. Those feats are amazing, and well worth losing Druid Shapeshifting. But, hey, that may just be me.

Not every Totem Shaman - at least it sounds like from your flavor - is going to be inured to war, so adding the warbeast template may not be necessary.

Ahh, so your group plays it so that putting Warbeast onto a druid's animal companion gives a penalty of 2 to the effective druid level for that animal companion then? I can dig it. Think that's a fair penalty for the magical creature template as afforded by the magical companion class feature then? Or bump it up to somewhere in the 3-5 level penalty range? More? :smallconfused:

Hmm. I was thinking of just giving Companion Soulbond (and now that you mention it, I'm thinking about renaming it Greater Share Soulmeld) as a bonus feat so it doesn't have to meet the pre-requisites, but I got enamored of the progression every 3 levels. XD

I think the greater use of the animal companion is at least a fair substitute for if not necessarily equal to the potential of a wildshaping Druidzilla, and the lack of wildshape combined with the bumped up HD/BAB, the shared soulmelds, and the greater ability to tactically positoin/work together/flank helps the animal companion take up more of the front stage in combat rather than playing second fiddle to a wildshaped druidzilla. Though I really don't expect it to compare all that favorably against Tier 1 optimized melee, since i wasn't really aiming to do so.

Seems like it's basically making the Totem Shaman and their companion into two T3 meleers in comparison with a Druidzilla which is a T1 meleer with a T4 meleer Animal Companion getting some buffs from the T1 meleer, depending upon how they're positioned/a feat expenditure.

...sparkly eyes about cool enhancements most people don't think of...SO COOL...

Not sure if just really liking the focus on sharing soulmelds with an animal companion without having to be attached at the hip/mounted upon it or if you're reacting to the change I made to the Magical Creature Template. Or just thinking about Warbeast and how awesome it is. :smallconfused:XD

Not every Totem Shaman - at least it sounds like from your flavor - is going to be inured to war, so adding the warbeast template may not be necessary.

Well, most of them wouldn't be strictly opposed to it unless it was suicidal or clearly not in the interest of the tribe or their patron. I'd say only some of them would be warmongery, and at least some would be the kind of people who'd train animals for hunting and other tasks, which could include training animals for war.

As I understand it, the meldshaping and spellcasting and animal companion progression along with the magical creature template are sufficient, probably more than sufficient in that department without adding free/instantaneous application of the Warbeast template to the Animal Companion as an additional class feature. :smallconfused: They can apply Warbeast in the usual manner if the DM allows Warbeast to be applied.

If I were doing a full re-write of animal companions I'd probably include something about Warbeast options though, yeah. Granted, if I were doing a full re-write here, it'd probably be more like cribbing from the Beast Heart Adept and expanding it across 15 levels and allowing animal companion progressing levels to stack with it. Which is what I originally started doing, but then I decided that I wasn't particularly interested in spending that much time reading through beast heart adept and its magical beast companions and scouring sourcebooks for other options.

I suppose I could follow the potential here and split what I've got into two more PrCs, one focused on the animal companion and meldshaping with some spellcasting for buffing/necessities and one focused just on meldshaping and spellcasting, getting closer to full casting progression as a result. Hmmm~

Something like... Twinsoul (Shaper) or something for the one whose knowledge of souls and magic bonds their soul with that of their companion and links them more and more, maybe with a capstone where they share a combined pool of both of their Max HP or something, maybe gradually give it more and more benefits of the Urban Companion on top of its regular animal companion benefits + magical creature template and maybe some other class boosts. I'd probably retain the name Totem Shaman for the more casting-focused meldshaper/caster hybrid (edit well, probably not, just nothing comes to mind. I'll have to take a swing at these tomorrow along with poking around at the Totem Fetishist).

Hmm. I should specify how the Totem Shaman applies the Magical Creature template to some extent. Probably call it a one day ritual costing 500-1000 gp that can be combined with the one day ritual to summon an animal companion in the first place. I suppose that'd clearly allow those who let animal companions be Warbeasts to Warbeast and then apply the Magical Creature template, for better or worse.

If you look at the enhancements by Druid level, a -2 to the effective druid level puts that animal companion back JUST a little bit. It will still bottom out just like a standard one, but two levels later.

Most Druid prestige classes grossly neglect the Companion, leaving it in the dust at a measly 5 ~ 8 levels of suck when he nears 20. I really like that you've made the companion a more competent fighter even without spell enhancements. Spells are necessary, of course, but then again, the feat support you give makes even spells unnecessary.

I think its great that you don't include this in the standard class' progression, but that you include them just in case. Just make sure to point out that those bonus feats are indeed incarnum feats, and thus can be selected. This build doesn't have a need for Natural Spell, so the Druid's going to be looking for a different 6th level feat (and granted bonus feat). This is a brilliant way to go.

On that note, I don't think for a moment that you should progress shapeshifting. Instead of that, this class uses Incarnum. You both sidestep potential Wild Shape abuse and provide an elegant and unique alternative i've not seen before. This is one of the big reasons why I like this prestige class so much.

I couldn't agree more. To add on, this debunks the druid in its power down to a mere comfortable tier of play. Still, I could see a person taking a certain amount of either the 10th level or 15th-level class and still eking out a potent ~ tier 1 class with full casting at 19-20. Furthermore, it gets people to invest interest in Incarnum, a grossly underrated and underused system.

Finally something I disagree with!

This can be a requirement to enter the class. The Totem Shaman communes with many Great Spirits, asking them to bestow upon his companion wisdom and prowess that he himself hopes to gain. Flavor, flavor, etc.

Warbeast takes training. Which is much easier for this class to do. woohoo!

Indeed. One of these days I'll even memorize that table without having to go back to and refer to it. XD Thanks for pointing that out, I'll need to refer back to that as I tweak things from here on, especially with that AC-focused idea.

Yeah, that or forget about the rest of the druid, but then, such is the nature of the Druid, where it's got those 3 main class features and only 2 PrCs to choose from that don't axe one of 'em. Seems like if a Totemist can make do without *needing* spells, then so can the animal companion with Totemist melds, yeah. Have to try it out to see though, I think.

Hmm? Not included in the standard class' progression? Share Soulmeld and Companion Soulbond are both bonus feats granted in the 15 level and 10 level version of Totem Shaman. :smallconfused: The greater form of Companion Soulbond that lets them share soulmelds up to a mile away is included later in this batch of homebrew, sure, mostly to see what people think of the idea and the distance provided by Companion Soulbond (30' instead of the measly 5' provided by Share Soulmeld).

I've got two versions of the Bonus Incarnum Feat class feature written up as a compare and contrast to see which one people prefer though.

Bonus Incarnum Feat: At 1st, 5th, 10th, and 15th level, the Totem Shaman may select one Incarnum feat as a bonus feat. Alternatively, the Totem Shaman may select Bonus Essentia, Double Chakra, Open Least Chakra, Open Lesser Chakra, Open Greater Chakra, Shape Soulmeld, or Split Chakra if they qualify.

vs.

Bonus Incarnum Feat: At 1st and 9th level, a Totem Shaman gains a bonus feat with the Incarnum descriptor or that allows them to shape or bind soulmelds.

Though I also considered just creating a list of all of the [General] and [Incarnum] feats from Magic of Incarnum that I wanted and a couple of [Divine] feats instead and just calling them Totem Shaman Bonus Feats.

On that note, I don't think for a moment that you should progress shapeshifting. Instead of that, this class uses Incarnum. You both sidestep potential Wild Shape abuse and provide an elegant and unique alternative i've not seen before. This is one of the big reasons why I like this prestige class so much.

Agreed, I might take a crack at a meldshaper/wildshaper PrC later on, but since that's already been done before I'd have to review what's been done to see if I feel a need to do it.

If I were to include meldshaping, wildshaping, animal companion, and spellcasting in a single PrC, I'd feel obligated to knock down meldshaping and spellcasting more than I'd like. :smalleek:

I couldn't agree more. To add on, this debunks the druid in its power down to a mere comfortable tier of play. Still, I could see a person taking a certain amount of either the 10th level or 15th-level class and still eking out a potent ~ tier 1 class with full casting at 19-20. Furthermore, it gets people to invest interest in Incarnum, a grossly underrated and underused system.

Even taking all of the 10 level version would allow a character build like Druid 3/Totemist 2/Totem Shaman 10/Druid+5, which would end up with 8th level druid wildshaping (+ a bit more with items), 18/20 animal companion progression + magical companion(which I'll update to match the 15 level version here in a bit instead of the weaker celestial or fiendish creature template), 12/20 meldshaping progression with all totemist chakra binds opened, and 17/20 druid casting.

And even a short dip delays their acquisition of higher level spells, so I figure that's a fair tradeoff even if they don't lose any casting aside from their Totemist levels.

I LOVE WHAT YOU'VE DONE. BE LIKE THOG, STOP THINKING SO HARD. :smalltongue:

*shrug* I'd say test it first. I like it as-is, but it's your prestige class, not mine.

Definitely need to test it out, aye. ...I should probably check around for good benchmarks to test it with, come to think of it. XD

Finally something I disagree with!

This can be a requirement to enter the class. The Totem Shaman communes with many Great Spirits, asking them to bestow upon his companion wisdom and prowess that he himself hopes to gain. Flavor, flavor, etc.

The gold and time cost of having a ritual like that specifically or having it kick in later in the class rather than being part of entering the class/its prerequisites/its first level features? Or both?

Hmm, interesting idea. I'll keep that in mind, especially for the Twinsoul Meldshaper idea. Thank you.

Warbeast takes training. Which is much easier for this class to do. woohoo!

Now I'm imagining Warbeast Duck Tales. :smallamused: This pleases me. And yeah, those handle animal soulmelds actually have a use now aside from playing at being Bubs (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=7097263&postcount=38)! XD

May I sig you on this?

Certainly.

Just came up with PrC stubs for a Beastmaster as it should have been, which I'm currently calling the Beastsoul Meldshaper and that more animal-companion focused totemist/druid theurge called the Twinsoul Meldshaper, great titles, I know. Might have them up and in tables later tonight.

Edit: Just added Beast Soul Meldshaper and two tweaks to add to the feats Natural Bond and Wild Cohort in the New Feats section.

Edit 2: I probably should budget time a bit better when I'm tinkering away. I now have the Twinsoul Shaper up, though I think the capstone is in need of serious tweaking.

Hmm. I like this a lot. Druid and Totemist naturally (no pun intended) go together. Totemist 2/Druid 3/Totem Shaman 15 would be a nice, solid build. Sapphire Hierarch is the only current such PrC, and the flavor is... quite restrictive.

Thank you. Part of the reason I came up with this was that I was looking over what options existed for a Divine/Totemist build(I'd been bouncing around between cleric, druid, and OA shaman, even.) I was considering and realized that I was SOL without being Lawful.

The other part is that Sapphire Hierarch's class features leave a bad taste in my mouth, and I was approaching from the perspective of emphasizing the meldshaping and augmenting that with casting.

The two homebrew on the subject I'd seen so far were more in line with being focused on wildshaping and meldshaping, which is why I added in the animal companion progression, in order to hit a different niche and justify something new rather than tweaking that stuff, which again ties back into the build I was working on that lead to my getting this idea, since a character that's invested in already getting additional natural attacks sets that investment on fire when they start shapechanging. This may or may not just be my personal inexperience with near-epic play.

...That, and I'm probably a little too enamored of the idea of the bond between the souls of animal companion and druid and sharing soulmelds and then ramping it up to 11. XD

Well, considering I lost track of this for a while, aside from typographical/copy-paste errors and doing a blurb of rationale explaining what I was thinking in general and then with each class, I guess this is done without any further feedback.

Probably should've just explained myself from the beginning, I suppose.

Trust me on this one, I might not be Sean K Reynolds or Gary Gygax, but my mind is still not a place one wants to go. XD

That, and in this case what was going through my head was very simple and (I think) practically transparent given what I did.

If your mind has an unhappy place, then don't play there! Kinda simple, really: every time you get emotional, your life is going to go in the crapper.

...but yeah, you already included excellent notes.

Indeed. Intended to bash that out over Thanksgiving. Then I remembered I had forgotten what a proper flavor text for a PrC looked like and only had my copy of Heroes of Horror with me.

Wuff. Well, I think I got *most* of what I need down for the Totem Shaman itself under a spoiler, and none of them are really very organization-oriented. Just need to fill in a couple gaps and polish it so that it no longer pains me to look at it.

Now, of course, I realize that I want to do a Totemist/Psychic Warrior combination PrC and a Psionic Beastmaster after reviewing my Twinsoul/Beastsoul meldshapers, which are basically just variants of one another already. Considering those were just variants of the Totem Shaman idea to begin with, that'd make the totemist/psionic beastmaster PrC a variant of a variant of a variant. I think. XD

Right, well, this has been an embarrassingly long time since I dealt with this.

Unfortunately the reason for this update is less that I revamped this and made everything 20% cooler and more that I was struck by the thought of making an NPC counterpart to the Totemist for reasons relating to a potential leadership fix/variant/alternative/spinoff I may or may not actually start working on.

So, that said, I just added the "Totem Devotee" to the third post of the thread, just below the Magical Creature template.

It may be a little strong right now, so I'd like some feedback as to where you'd place it in the tier system, I was going for a low T4 as the high end and more of a upper-to-middle T5. It may have the fatal flaw of just involving too much dice rolling for an NPC that could potentially appear in large numbers, and it's definitely rough around the edges right now, but I do think I just might be onto something with simplifying and stripping down the Totemist to the basic elements.

May just need to simplify and strip it down further.

And remembering to *not* post something I just finished a rough draft of at 3 AM and instead holding onto it for a bit longer. XD But yeah, need to do some shakedown trials.

Which means I should probably hunt down some recommended protocols for testing things...
