Wow, Nale got Vaarsuvius's name right.

Kalir
2007-01-05, 03:47 PM
That is bloody brilliant, all around.

And Elan seems to be better at illusionry, while holding his own against Nale in close combat. Nifty.

Excellently played there V. I was just rereading the Origin book that just shows how V can play the intellect quickly. I do like how Elan can multitask so well.

Lol, evil tellytubby. Elan sure does know how to concentrate on 2 things, but I doubt he can concentrate on it while talking and worrying... Thog not scared anymore?

And welcome back Giant. You were sorely missed.

The time spent with with :thog: has probably taught :elan: some of his fears and his general inability to disbelieve illusions.

That giant floating hand in the first panel made me think of Midna. I really need to stop playing Twilight Princess so much. Great comic, Mr. Giant.

Tele-frickin-tubbies! :smalleek: I'm with Thog on this one.

Poor Haley, looks like she picked the wrong week to have a major plot break-through.

Yea, V!

The last several comics have really been of high quality! Kudos!

(and I'd be scared of the teletubby as well)

Excellent deduction on V's part.

"Insult Nale, and whoever responds IS Nale." Elegantly simple.

Excellent, chuckle worthy and clever on V's part. Good to see you back, Giant.

Dude, fantastic comic....I can't stop saying expletives followed by "Yeah" because the world is finally right again, There is OOTS greatness, Nale gets whacked and V rocks.

Thog is so abused. And it's so funny.

Really, though, are we sure that V sparked Nale? After all, only an evil genius would think to use a Tele-tubby against Thog.

"Apparently" Go, V!

2007-01-05, 03:59 PM
I just love the smell of burnt nale in the morning. Too bad about thog being afraid of teletubies. It would totally rock to see him beat them up. That would show the nonsense spewing kids tv show makers to shape up!

Nale's greatest weakness - inflated ego! A singing Belkar always makes me laugh, so I was laughing even from the first panel! What a great comic!

Poor Thog indeed!

Haley seems to have gotten the worst end of her fight though.

And welcome back, Giant.

Just have to say, I love the fourth frame where the fight scene is beautifully laid out.

Great comic all around!

They should just be able to tell via their "caster colors" methinks. Elan's always been blue, and Nale's always been yellow. Solved!

Though I can't fault V's solution. Nice stuff.

Tola
2007-01-05, 04:04 PM
Thinking on it, though...Haley is NOT going to be happy, even if she survives. She gained a level or two, and now they may be gone for good, plus some MORE, even.

The Vorpal Tribble

From the steaming jungles of Lala Land it came, primal episodes of Howdy Doody playing across its torso. It lifted its geometrically ornamented head and roared with the sound of a thousand five year olds being forced to eat their broccoli. IT WAS THE DIRE TELETUBBIE! A beast from the beginnings of the TV era!

And the world did tremble...

Are you a closet VegeTales fan, Giant?

Leggo my ego. Hmmmmm.

I really liked this one too, 394 and this one are the best in ages. I love how a GM will play a "super genius" evil bad guy, and you're thinking, "sooooo... played."

Way to go, V!

Who knew that an 18 Int would help you see through the use of the bluff skill?

By the way, V's understanding of psychology is quite impressive. I'm starting to accept his/her explanation of Belkar's proto-brain as well.

A beast from the beginnings of the TV era!

And the world did tremble...
Dude. No. You are hereby categorically forbidden to homebrew anything based on the concept of a Dire Teletubby. The normal variety's easily bad enough.

On the topic of the comic... This is by far the most hilarity I've endured in a long while. Belkar continuing to sing while Grasped by a Hand was nice, as well as the sniping "you rolled a 2" "at least I had it prepped" which was soooo reminiscent of so many of my D&D experiences. "What do you mean, the sorc didn't take dispel at 3?! Oh, fireball and fly are nice for personal use, but dude... the rest of us are hosed now!" Of course, the fact that it also provided an excuse for V and Durkon to be approaching Haley's room (as the rope expert) was absolute gold in plot terms.

Best one-word response to date is now, definitely the word "Apparently."
Of course, V could totally have done a Wallace Shawn imitation at that point too, but it would have gone to double length. "You COULD be trusting to your Evasion to allow you to avoid my spell entirely, thus I clearly cannot trust the Elan in front of ME..."

I like the way the plotlines are starting to converge a bit again, giving us a sense that we'll have some kind of resolution shortly... Hope Durkon has some diamonds on hand and a Restoration prepped, because Haley doesn't look too good. I'd tend to rate this one about an 8/10 myself. Mostly because V painted Nale most beautifully into a corner, partly because teletubby illusions are a dramatic sign of character development in Elan's case, partly because I'm glad the party's arriving given just how groggy* Haley is, and partly because... well... Who designs an epithet around his deity's duodenum anyhow?! :)

I find myself wondering if Rich's personal emergency involved anyone's ulcer (not that I'd anticipate ever finding out, nor that I need to, just idle curiosity since the word doesn't spring unbidden to most people's minds.)

Last panel = most awesome panel in all existance. I can't explain why, but it's Elan's expression that really seals it for me.

Solid! This comic does a nice job of containing both Nale's and Vaarsuvius's wordiness while remain compact and moving the plot along. The jokes were good, if not hilarious, and the strip had a good feel.

I wonder How Haley and Durkon are doing. The subject of the next strip perhaps?

Despite finding it funny I was annoyed by this strip. I'd rather have seen Haley saved first, Elan was in no immediate danger. Now I'm stuck with this image of Haley suffering for the weekend.

I see Elan was going easy on Thog. If he cast an illusion of Bharney instead of a teletubby, results could've been fatal.

That was an awesome comic! And I don't say that for every comic, even though they are all very well done. And I like V's lines, especially "At least I managed to have the spell prepared", and "Apparently". I also liked how Elan managed to take on Thog and Nale, although I expected Haley's alchemical arrows from last comic should've badly hurt Sabine. Still, even with those good lines, I think I might have preferred it if Elan and Haley could handle those 3 by themselves. Still, great comic, and I hope everything worked out well for you, Giant.

Note: anyone notice that panel 3 has the door on its hinges?

Yeah, but the joke wouldn't be nearly as obscure, and not as hilarious when you DO get it.

Priceless. Everything from V's sexually ambiguous comments, to cartoon layout, through teletubbies and outstanding dialogue in general.

Man, I love this strip :)

Sigh...well, being a villian, it's obvious that Nale can't suceed forever. I still enjoyed the plot while it lasted. At least now we get to see his dashing escape.

It was still interesting to see Nale to try to hijack the "good twin" defense, even if he got countered. Definitely in his top ten, though I doubt he'll be able to beat convincing Elan to attack Haley for a while.

At least Sabine is happy for the moment, seeing how she finally gets to drain some of Haley's levels.

V likes Judy Garland... :smallconfused:
And was smarter than I would ever be, in making it look like V was gonna go for zapping Elan.

"Apparently." One of the most badass moments in the OOTS ever. I love it! Almost there with the whole Durkon thing in Cliffport, Roy tossing Xykon; well, just on a much smaller scale... still, so classy! :smallamused:

"Thog scared" sure cracked me up for a good while. Couldn't stop looking at it... can't even now

Giant, to start with, I hope all is well.

Secondly, Great Comic. Many good lines, and the dire teletubby was awesome. Maybe if Elan "scares it away" thor will become a friend? ;)

As a response to...

I thought the small intestine was the one related to #1...

In which case it would be used quite often due to Thor's frequent indulging in Beer...

Sorry to say, way off.

Kidneys and the baldder are related to "#1".
Small intestine pulls nutrients out of the to-be-waste.
Large intestine pulls out remaining moisture.

I would have thought someone would have already said this, but did you mean "natural 20"???Nope. Dispel check is d20+caster level, for V that means about D20+12. DC is 11+spell caster's caster level, for Nale that means about 15. V succeeds on (roughly) any roll higher than a 2.

Lol, evil tellytubby. Elan sure does know how to concentrate on 2 things, but I doubt he can concentrate on it while talking and worrying... Thog not scared anymore?

Apparently he put more ranks in Concentrate when he made that PrC level. Or maybe he can cast Greater Harmonize? (Not sure what. I have a bard PC, but he does not know any illusion spells.)

And I truly loved to see Varsuvius telling Elan and Nale apart. In this case, logic rules! "Apparently." :vaarsuvius:

Elan's intelligence has definitely increased.

I liked this one, Giant. Good job. The teletubbie was a nice touch; I liked how Elan is obviously getting smarter with his illusions and with his reasoning. Vaarsuvius got in some good lines, and Nale's ego won out again, which I found a tad depressing. I hope we see Durkon and Haley kick Sabine's ass next. I wonder what'll happen to Belkar, or where Roy is.

400 is when Miko runs into Azure City with Xykon and his army trailing behind them!

Thinking on it, though...Haley is NOT going to be happy, even if she survives. She gained a level or two, and now they may be gone for good, plus some MORE, even.

A single restoration (4th level cleric) spell will dispel all of those negative levels, unless Haley is completely drained to death or the spell isn't cast within 24 hrs: Hilgya did this in #74 after Sabine drained Durkon into helplessness, so we know it would work on Haley.

Great comic!

It had a lot of OotS Zane (which must be what you have if you're "zany", right?), wit and intelligent humour. Plus a surprising endning - I hadn't seen that coming, not until the second-to-last panel.

Plus, this seems to be one of the few "classic" Oots strips in a while. Don't get me wrong, storydriven issues are great - but for at quick fix, there´s nothing like a good punchline (or, should it be "blastline"?)

Hmmm. Given V's usual spell arsenal, I'm wondering if he didn't use Disintegrate on Nale because:

--he wasn't *quite* sure it was Nale, or;

--his BAB stinks and he wasn't sure of tagging an unarmored target, or;

--he knew that Elan might not want his brother killed (possible, but using a 10d6 lightning bolt on a wounded foe could have been rather lethal as well).

Sheer genius! I'm still laughing and I read it ten minutes ago.

Then I had to read it again, and tell everyone about it, and I'm still giggling. Truly one of the finest OOTS comics of recent times. Everything's coming together... I wonder how upset Roy is going to be when he finds out what he's missed.

Hello. I'm new to OOTS. In fact, my brother sent me a link to the Monty Python skit with Roy trying to buy a polearm. I stayed up for 3 days and read EVERY SINGLE ONE. Amazing. I have a random question, though. Didn't Belkar get an enchantment placed on him (#295) called the "Mark of Justice" that doesn't allow him to deal lethal damage to any living creature within city limits? Does the "Charm Person" (#383) that Nale put on him override "Mark of Justice" or what was Belkar going to do with Durokan if he caught him?

That's just "Pinching Fingers," or maybe "Gibby's Pinching Fingers."

No, he's just being charmed into doing something that will trigger the mark. He can also chase agressively if he likes without messing with the spell, which is all he's looked to have done at this point.

Belkar's Mark of Justice doesn't actually prevent him from dealing lethal damage; it just punishes and sickens him if he does. The charm must have addled his mind enough either to make him forget about the consequences of attacking Durkon, or to decide that it was worth the risk.

Wow! It seems that love, a form of madness, can make Elan clear headed. With Haley down and the odds worsened to 3 to 1, he still doesn't panic and devises a tactic against such long odds. He's probably reckoned that distracting Thog will buy him the time to defeat Nale but he must know he can't defeat Sabine and, thus, doesn't have a plan to rescue Haley. It takes a level headed person to keep pulling tricks when a loved one is in trouble and there's no end game plan.

However, Elan is clearly deranged. Only the disturbed can think of the Teletubbies. Indeed, the existence of the Teletubbies is the argument against solipsism. As our unfractured minds could possibly invent the Teletubbies, it must have been created by an outside force. Therefore, something other than the self must exist. Poor Elan is mad.

Doesn't that exist in Munchkin d20? My first impression was "Bigby's Atomic Wedgie" until I saw that that Belkar was being lifted by the foot, making it an ordinary Grasping Hand. But I love that he's still singing and swirly-eyed. Bad for OoTS, great for laughs.

The charm must have addled his mind enough either to make him forget about the consequences of attacking Durkon, or to decide that it was worth the risk.
Let's weigh his options:
Against:
1. Mark of justice will use bestow curse on him
2. Roy will get mad.
For:
1. He gets to kill his much hated party members
2. He gets to keep the magic items for himself
3. He is charmed.
Clearly, he has enough motivation with the charm, but not without it. Similarly, giving the items to Nale would tip the balance toward Against.

Completely off subject here. Do I detect love/hate towards Star Trek: TOS? (Specifically, episode #69 named "Whom Gods Destroy") I myself am not a "trekkie" but just recently saw a rerun of that particular episode. The same "shoot us both" is used when a shape-changing crazy starship captain morphs to look like Kirk, and Spock must differentiate between them, as he is the only one with a phaser. The conflict ends when the real Kirk says almost the exact line of "shoot us both", only he says its the only way to save the Enterprise and Spock realizes that he must be the real captain.

it's been done and redone alot; for example, I prefer the robot chicken version where white michael jackson and black michael jackson are fighting, and black michael jackson tells a kid with a gun to shoot them both; the police officers go "Oh! He must be the real one!" but the the kid does what he says and shoots both of them.

Truthfully, I didn't like this one that much; I can see why so many people love it (and it is--finally--a straight joke comic as opposed to a dramatic one, but eh.. I don't know.

The evil teletubbie was the part that I loved; Nale, not so much (I personally thought V was going to fry Elan, since his defence of it being too cliched sounded like something Nale would say).

Nale, according the the class geekery thread, probably has 6 sorcerer levels -- that would make the Dispel DC 17. V is level 12 or 13, let's say 13. V fails the Dispel DC on a 3 or less (15%).

Now THAT'S what I call a good comic

Althogh I like the new swashbuckling Elan much better than the old one, it sucks how he ignores Haley's butt getting kicked. He's supposed to be a damsel-saving hero, dammit!

Unfortunately, Sabine apparently has Elan's number, given how quickly she and the still-wounded Nale had him helpless in #395. Locking down Thog and taking out Nale quickly enough to make a desperate attempt to save Haley before her levels were all drained--or the damage from the draining killed her--was almost certainly going to be the best approach. . .hmmm--maybe Elan *did* put a point in INT at 12th level.

Po was my daughter's favorite teletubby. Seeing Po with a pirate eye patch is awesome enough. Seeing a Po illusion with a pirate eyepatch menacing Thog?

Oh this is delightful. It is great to see a return to the humor, the St. Louis theme song, and to see V's intellect kick ass. Now, like others, I am eagerly awaiting the return of Roy.

Hmmm... We have not seen Pompey in a while, have we? Has the little half elf been busy in town? We never saw him arrive with Sabine, but that does not mean that he could not have teleported in on his own.

Thank you, thank you!

Hehe. I V getting Nale was a really nice twist on the classic "which Kirk do I shoot?" dilemma. Interesting how V at once emulates the original (Spock, too, used observation to make his decision), while, at the same time, pointing out what a cliche it is! This is why I love this comic. :-)

Some really nice work here. I too, await with breathless anticipation the entrance of Roy.

Hey, guys, I know that you're just being concerned about someone who creates something you really enjoy, and although I'm following up to one user in particular, I've seen this sort of thing before, so I'm not just trying to pick on one person. And I really don't mean to sound like I'm jumping down people's throats for trying to be nice, but...

Well, we're not close personal friends of Rich or anything like that. We appreciate his comic and the content he puts here, but his personal life is, well, personal. If he'd wanted to explain what the emergency was, I'm sure he'd have given more detail; likewise, our indication that things are under control is the fact that we've got a comic here today instead of Monday.

By all means continue to offer well-wishes and the like, but I think it'd be respectful of The Giant's privacy if we didn't ask questions about the details. I'm sure if he's ready to talk to the general public about it, he'll do it.

Just MHO.

Awesome comic!

Nale should be in pretty dire straights about now. He can't have too many hit points to begin with (six or more sorceror levels + some rogue levels + probably a so-so CON due to the ability dependencies for his pipe-dream multiclassing,) and now he's been sliced up by Elan and ate a lightning bolt from V.

Completely off subject here. Do I detect love/hate towards Star Trek: TOS? (Specifically, episode #69 named "Whom Gods Destroy")

That, or one of the billions of other places that routine has been used. There's a reason Elan calls it a cliche and the oldest trick in the book, and why V calls it a dull and predictable plot turn.

It's good to see a situation where the 'intelligent' wizard actually does something smart. All too often, intelligent wizards are shown as being fundamentally no smarter than ordinary people, with the only difference being that they use bigger words and sneer at 'mundanes'.

I know some profoundly stupid people with that attitude, so I don't consider it a mark of intelligence.

It's not quite Evan's Tentacles of Forced Intrusion, but it'll do in a pinch.

I loved how V used his ego against him. When I first saw the title, I didn't notice the missing "g" so I thought that Durkon was going to play Tug O' War with Thog at some point (before in the comic, V grabbed his shoulder and he said, "Leggo!"

Btw, that was a stroke of genius having a tellytubby attack Thog. Go Elan!

@Hilary

Well, Sabine made it quite clear she would not be flying with someone who accidentally gropes her for three days - as long as its not Nale. For teleportation... well, what would you say are the chances that
a) Pompey has leveled up enough to be able to teleport
b) Pompey has been given enough money to buy a teleport (he has one scroll of sending, which he should use when he discovers that Elan breaks out of jail - wonder why he didn't do that...)
c) Pompey has been charming enough to somehow get an airship passage to the city

I've always suspected that the teletubbies were something that had crawled their way up from the deepest, darkest, most vile pit of the abyss of ultimate evil. And now I feel vindicated.

Gotta love the V-man showing why he/she is "paid to do nothing but think." An elegant solution to the problem of Nale/Elan and Elan/Nale. And I suspect that for future reference, our elven wizard will put some sort of arcane mark on Elan that's invisible to the uninitiated, but will always let Vaarsuvius know who's who.

Heh, so much for evasion. What good are those rogue levels if you can't make a reflex save?

You know, while things look bad for the guild, The giant has a way of having them pull a 180 on us and totally get back in the game.

After Nale got trounced, who thought there'd be a round two? But he bluffed his way out of it and regrouped! After Sabine got Nailed, who thought that they'd have a chance? But thog smashed em! And now, Nale's got blasted, thog's scared, and the calvary just showed up...

Now's the time for the Linear guild to dig deep and show us just WHY they're such good villians!

I may sound strange, but the heart of the linear guild is what makes me root for them; sure, they're evil, but they don't give up. heck, THEY'RE the underdogs most of the time! They have that resolve that makes beating them reminiscent of throwing a brick, the type that lets them get right back up and refuse to give in.

I'd take that in a villian over being 6 levels higher and a lich anyday!

This isn't the first time I've been surprised and impressed by V's psychological/social insightfulness. I think it's a very cool departure from the stereotype you might expect from a character like her - otherworldly, over-intellectual, logical but not understanding emotion, "Vulcan-ideal". Maybe it was the ears, misleading me. :) Of course she's older than the grandmother of your average "old wise woman", I guess you can learn a lot about people with a genius IQ and centuries of lifespan.

From "While I enjoy the work of Judy Garland as much as the next elf" to "Apparently" - awesome comic, Giant!

They have that resolve that makes beating them reminiscent of throwing a brick, the type that lets them get right back up and refuse to give in.

That's a big reason why I like the Linear Guild (and Team Evil and Miko) more than the OotS. You know that the OotS will suceeded, eventually, at whatever they do...they're the protagonists, after all. I don't think they've had any sort of significant failure to date...the closest you can count is Roy asking the Oracle the wrong question, and that's a case of his hubris finally getting the better of him more than anything else. So there's really no dramatic tension in anything the OotS does.

When the villians/antagonists go up against them, though...like you said, there's plenty of "How will Nale get out of this one?" moments. I love their ability to surprise me with what they come up with to attack/thwart/escape from the OotS. For example, I think that Nale's off the cuff bluff that turned Elan against Haley (however briefly) is one of the finest moments in the entire comic, because it expertly showcases just how creative, quick witted, and just plain charismatic he is.

Though I admit that particular example may be in part a reaction to the whole "Dashing Swordsman" bit..seeing Nale use his Charisma "as nature intended" in comparison to Elan taking levels in a twink class to use it as mundane combat modifiers...

Well, as Sabine pointed out, it's not like they never tried... :amused:
The one thing (okay, two things) Nale can't stop talking about, however, are his much-vaunted evil intellect and originality. Thus, they have to be even more precious than his heterosexuality that almost caused him to blow his cover.
