View Full Version : Is Gate the most common ability in 3.5?

It is the most common ability/spell for classes? The Truename, Incarnate, Healer, Wiz/Sorc, and Cleric/Favored Soul can all cast it. :smalltongue:

It's also a level 9 spell.

As in, those who can use it are those rare individuals who have reached near-divine levels of power without dying horribly.

Is the potential for access to Gate common? Probably. Wizards, Sorcerers, Clerics are all pretty common; Healers, Incarnates, and Favored Souls are not unheard of.

But is the ability itself common? I would say heck no.

In fact, I'll say it again. Heck no.

I said ability, because it doesn't exist solely as a spell.

Do you have one that seems to show up more?

Breath weapons?

Full attacks is the most common ability, everyone and their mother can do it!:smalltongue:

Weapon and Armor Proficiency. Almost every class has an entry for this ability. Some races, too. (Looking at you, Elves.)

Dammit, I was going to make an edit to clarify, but everyone posted me to it. I meant to say class ability. :smalltongue:

Simple Weapon Proficiency is a class ability.

Wizards and monks don't get it!

Wizards and monks don't get it!

But Elf Wizards do get certain Martial Weapon Proficiencies.

Dang Elves.

Wouldn't Detect Magic be more common? I think every casting class gets it and god knows how many random creatures/races and such have it as a spell-like ability.

would access to the Craft skill be a class ability?

Profession as a class skill is the most common class ability. Only Fighters and Barbarians lack it.

Weapon Proficiencies aren't, because many PrCs don't grant those.

Well, I think skills are different from class abilities, unless we are saying having skills in general counts...

I am not counting PrCs, since I think it skews in favor of more Gates (Divine Crusader, Ur Priest, Beholder Mage).

I was mainly trying to point out that Gate still isn't the most common ability. In fact, unless you put on ludicrous parameters, it never will be.

What about the ability to read? Every class except barbarian gets it, and even barbarians who take a level in another class are granted it?

But the lack of ability to read is actually the class feature for the barbarian - it's a class feature on the table and in the list of class features called Illiteracy.

evasion is more common than gate. so common you can even buy a ring of it.

I don't think so. In addition, candles of invocation are cheaper than rings of evasion.

Gah. from there, the logic will go that infinite godlike power is the most common ability in 3.5...

Well, if you take a few feats... :smalltongue:

This is why I am talking about class abilities. XD

I'd say bonus feats are the most common ability in 3.5. Seriously, the fighter alone gets like 11 of them!

But almost no-one else does until epic.

I think a more focused question would be:

Which spell shows up on the spell lists for the most classes and/or class-granted spell-like abilities.

gota second detect magic
off the top of my head clerics druids and wizards and bards get it.
warlocks and totemists can get it at will also

Detect Magic is a common one in 3.5. In PF, a good measure of whether or not you should be playing a class is if it can cast detect magic. :smalltongue:

Yeah.

Craft is an even more common class skill than Profession.

If we follow the logic of Racial Hit Dice= Levels in your type, then probably Move Speed.

It's not a class feature, it's a racial feature. A dragon with levels in sorcerer and a dragon with levels in dragon have the exact same movement speed.

I cannot think of a class which is bared frm speaing as a class ability.

Hence, Pazuzu, Pazuzu Pazuzu is technically going to literally ultimate cosmic power.

If you don't limit it to class abilities a ridiculous amount of creatures share some very common outsider traits.

Probably, the notion of portals or summoning otherworldly creatures is pretty basic.
