What would be a good prestige class for an artificer to go into? Are there any other base classes that would be worth dipping into? Any ideas on items to create?

Be wary of PrCing/multiclassing with an Artificer as none of them refill your Craft Reserve. You will therefore either want to wait until you get Retain Essence (to DE items) or at least stagger PrC levels with base class levels for refills.

That said, the Handbook (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=2829.0) should answer all of your questions.

Only PrC when you have Retain Essence, or else you become bad at your primary schtick.

There aren't any really broad artificer classes. You can dip wizard, cleric, and druid so you can activate all your spell-list-related items without UMD checks.

The most generic is Alchemist Savant (about alchemy), but a common PrC is Cannith Wand Adept (must-have for blasters, setting-specific). The other two are Renegade Mastermaker (turns you into a warforged, not fantastic) and Unbound Scroll (ridiculously specific entry requirements).

I honestly recommend full-classing the artificer, or taking 1 or 2 single-level dips in a class with a big spell list.

Make lots of wands. Wands are great.

Ardent Dilettante works surprisingly well if your goal is to make a skillful artificer. I used it heavily in a build that was focused more on artificer infusions than standard crafting.

But as has been mentioned, you'll probably want to stick with Artificer, or maybe Uncanny Trickster if you want to be skillful. Unless, that is, you want to be a gunslinger (at the cost of everything else). If that's the case, consider Cannith Wand Adept, Uncanny Trickster and Legacy Champion for a Wand Overdrive (http://community.wizards.com/content/forum-topic/3641156) build. It's not actually as good as a straight-up artificer, but it's fun, and adding +13 to the DC and caster level of any wands you use is pretty nasty, especially when you're double fisting them.
