Arcane Archer/Ranged Gish

I've always wanted to play a ranged-gish type character but unfortunately as everyone knows, arcane archer kinda sucks. Has anybody built a character like this that they thought was pretty good? Might be making a character like this in a game in the near future, and so I've come here for help!

For now let's just say all 3.5 books and web content is fine. (Including dragon magazine, but only if it's really good :smalltongue:).

Add 7-8/10 casting progression to Arcane Archer. Viola, it no longer completely sucks.
Abjurant Champion is a great Gish class, and a dip in spellsword or something may or may not help.
