At the door to the nightclub, greeting applicants is a tall, fat human well over 2 meters tall with rosy cheeks, reddish grey hair, and a neatly trimmed, but grey, beard. He smiles and scratches his beard as the applicants approach.

He then says, "Welcome, welcome. I'm Jonas Zwillenger, Captain of The Angry Mule."

He leads everyone further into the nightclub, Neon Supernova. Towards the back on the righthand side he's reserved a small room where the music from the 'live' band isn't quite so obnoxious. The band, 'Rocko and the Tin-heads', consists of a middle aged man, presumably Rocko, making repairs to several droids, while several other droids crank out Heavy Metal. The club is mostly empty, though it is not obvious if this is due to the music or the early hour at which this 'interview' is taking place.

Once behind the velvet curtain, the captain takes a seat on one of the plush couches and motions for everyone else to do the same. The interviewees consist of 6 Humans, a Quarren, 2 Ithorians, and a Wookie.

The captain looks at the group and says, "I'm going to get right to this because I have shipment to make and if we don't takeoff in the next couple hours I'm going to be late."

Looking around at the group, his gaze lingers on the Wookie, the Captain continues, "I'm not sure what position you applied for, but Wookies are not known for their ability to speak Galactic Basic. Can you?"

The Wookie growls and howls back a response. "What? You were serious about that? I'm a hardworker and an excellent engineer. At least I'm not here to steal from you like Tsessek."

The captain listens and then says, "Yes, I'm sorry, I was serious about that. Thanks for the advice. All rejected applicants can get a free drink at the bar on the way out. Sorry again."

The wookie stands up and howls one last statement before turning to leave. "Great, a free drink. I'm never going to get off this rock." It sounded quite sarcastic for a wookie.

The captain looks back to the group, his gaze focuses on a couple of young humans and one on the Ithorians. "These are serious times. This is no game. We get attack by pirates almost every other shipment. Ships get boarded all the time for phony cargo inspections and other scams. There is a chance any or all of us could be killed. We need to depend on each other. Take a moment to seriously consider that free drink."

The captain pauses and leans back. After a moment, a young male human with long blond hair stand up and walks out while saying, "well, sorry to bother you, that drink sounds like an excellent idea." Just after he leaves, all eyes turn back to a young red-headed human female who looks like she's about to say something rebellious when the young Ithorian stands up and leaves.

The captain looks to the girl, who holds his gaze. He then says, "Very well. These being serious times, our ship's policy regarding incompetence is quite harsh. Mistakes happen, but if the rest of the crew decides you are messing things up too much and probably bluffed your way in, then we walk you to the airlock."

The Quarren's tentacles quiver, he blinks, and stands up. He walks to the curtain before stopping. As he begins to speak, the Captain slowly draws a Heavy Blaster and takes aim. The Quarren says, "You are quite bloodthirty for a human. I am not willing to let you walk me out the airlock just because you think I fly too fast." Just then he turns around quick, a hold-out blaster in hand, pointed at the captain. He opens his mouth to say something when the Captain fires his heavy blaster. The Quarren drops to the floor and the Velvet room fills with the smell of burnt Quarren flesh.

The Ithorian raise his hands in the air and backs slowly towards the door saying, "Sorry Captain, but I can not make your association. Good day to you. Time for a Tiberian Ale."

The Captain places the blaster in his lap and looks to the remaining 5 humans and says, "Do any of the rest of you plan to steal from me? No? Well, then you can call me JZ or Captain as it pleases you. As was mentioned in the advertisement, the pay is 200 credits plus 10% profits. I've got 3 month's worth of payments to the Hutts left on the ship and then the profits will soar."

The Captain holsters the blaster and smiles, his cheeks even rosier. He adjusts himself in his seat, leans forward and says, "I've got 5 positions available and 5 interviewers. With a bit of luck, I'll be all set." The captain looks to each person and asks, "so, who are you and which position did you wish to apply for?"

Kera

The redhead was sure going to say something before the little drama unfolded. Now all she does is lean back in her chair with a smirk and glance over at the dead guy on the floor. Your loss, dumbass. She looks at the man sitting next to her and nods once, then turns to JZ. "I’m Kera, a pilot. Whatever kind of bucket you got, as long as it’s spaceworthy, I can fly it. And my first word was 'astrogate'. So long as you don’t try to screw us, I’ll return the favor."

Kera has shoulder-length, light red hair with a slight wave to it and bright green eyes. She looks fairly pale, like she doesn't see much sunshine, with a light sprinkling of freckles across her nose and cheeks. She stands at 1.7 meters and is well put together. Currently, she is wearing plain, ordinary clothing and has a heavy blaster belted at her side.

A tall, lean man whose pale skin contrasts sharply with his black, tousled hair is next to speak. He is well-dressed in pricey black boots and pants, a tailored dark green shirt, and a jacket of fine, black bantha leather. An expensive and well-made blaster pistol rests low on his hip and to the casual observer he carries no other weapons. His green eyes are hidden behind tinted glasses, and he wears a casual, easy smile.

He reclines, completely at ease, sitting with his arms spread along the back of the couch and his legs crossed. "Evayn I'ithay. First mate, JZ. I know a thing or two about most systems on a ship, and what's more I know a bit about people as well. I've worked shipping before, and I've got acquaintances in most any sector you'll swing through. And," he says, leaning forward and smiling playfully over his glasses, "I speak Basic."

Daine

"Daine Calmas," states a young man. Brown hair is pulled back into a pony tail hanging down between his shoulder blades, framing a light complexion, slightly sunburnt. He wears a dark blue, short sleeved shirt tucked into a pair of lightly coloured, sturdy pants. A small redish case is attached to his hip within easy reach, but no weapons are visible. He sits with arms crossed, eyes tilted towards the dead man laying on the ground.

"I'm an engineer by trade, and I'll keep your bucket flying," his eyes trail back up to the interviewer. "Even if we do run into some troubles." He grins slightly. "Who knows, may even be able to throw in a few upgrades if you can provide the needed parts."

Kaff

One of the first to arrive was a Human male wearing light armor, a vibroblade over his shoulder. His face is completely obscured by his helmet but dark brown skin is visible on the backs of his hands.

When Zwellinger brought out his heavy blaster, the armored man put his hand on a blaster at his hip but did nothing more as Zwellinger aimed at the Quarren. After the Quarren drops, the armored figure seems to study everyone in the room, especially the Captain.

When the captain asks, the man replies, “my name is Kaff Chalma. I’m a . . . security specialist. There's a long arm outside that they wouldn't let me bring in. I’ve done things like this before and when I get the chance Captain I’d like to talk to you about a few security protocols.”

JZ smiles at each of the applicants. After the engineer speaks, he adds, "Sadly, the Mule wasn't the biggest, fastest, or prettiest ship out there when I bought her. Its been almost 3 years now and I've had to skimp on upgrades and a fair bit of maintenance just to make the payments."

JZ scratches his beard and continues, "At this point, the one person I had to hire is you. One thing my bucket needs is someone to patch is so the water stays inside. The ship could carry 60 passengers, but its been a month since the cargo area was air tight. I can only carry sealed cargo, or cargo that don't mind being frozen and depressurized."

JZ looks to Kaff with a bit of puzzlement and says, "A long arm? Do you mean to tell me you've got some sort of cyborg attachment? In any case the security position is open. You certainly have the right sort of look about you for that kind of work."

JZ, looking to the last applicant with a hopeful smile, says, "Have the fates blessed me? What are the chances that you are applying for the Financial position?"

Vicks

Vicks wears average clothing, a keen eye will notice a blaster and a knife. He has light brown hair, blue eyes and fair skin. He smiles quietly before he responds.

"Very good chances, in fact." says Vicks with a smile as he hand a small stack of papers. "My name is Vicks Narten, and if you will browse through my credentials, you will see that I have quite a bit of experience in the field." He produces another sheet. "Here are my references. As you can see I did quite a bit of work on Nal Hutta and Narr Shadaa. Speaking of which I am fluent in Huttese, Rodese, Ryl, and Quarrenese." He smiles and awaits a response

Looking to the red-headed girl and the engineer JZ says, "You two know each other already? Father daughter?"

JZ leans back a little with a, 'well, what do you know' surprised look on his face. Turning to Vicks, he says "Your position is not as 'cut and dry' as the other positions. I need someone who will help with the bidding negotiations, who will make sure the cargo is in good condition when we pick it up, who will make sure we don't break anything, who will ensure we take proper precautions when securing the cargo in the hold. When transporting passengers, I need a liason to deal with their needs and to keep them from bothering me too much."

"Perhaps you can help with the finances as well. The purchasing of food stores, buy new star charts, locating suppliers and purchasing materials to keep my ship 'spaceworthy'.", he says with a hearty laugh and a smile to Kera. "Maybe with your experience and contacts you can even help bring in some business."

JZ looks to each of the applicants and says, "I like to keep things on the light side, there is enough of this business to be stressed and serious about without spending our time on board all grumpy. Once we're safely in hyperspace, I really try to lighten the mood."

Just then, JZ's datapad beeps a reminder. With a frantic look at the time JZ says, "I need to start preparations soon. Can you all be ready to board in the next 2 hours? I know this is short notice, but, as they say, 'Time is Money', and I'm short on both. I'm just amazed on got a full crew on one system. I thought, without a doubt, that I'd have to conduct interviews on the next three systems."

With that, JZ struggles to stand up, one hand on his knees, another on his back. With a sigh and groan, he mutters, "I'm getting too old for this."

Kera

With a snort, Kera manages to restrain laughter at JZ's suggestion that she and Daine might be father and daughter. "No, we're not related. And I'm not as young as I look." She looks over at Daine with a playful smirk. "I think Daine is as old as he looks, though." Turning back to JZ, "I can do whatever ya want, flying and navigating is just what I'm best at."

Daine chuckles lightly at JZ. "No, definitely not," he says, glancing back at Kera with a slightly loppsided grin. "I've worked with her for a while though. She's honest and can fly well, or at least as well as she is treated." He looks back to JZ. "And lighter is always better," he says with a smile. "I should be able to get everything stowed by then as well if you can tell me where you're hangered."

Having gotten ready to usher everyone out without telling them the important information, JZ laughs out loud hard enough to bring a tear to his eye. His face fully red, his 150kg body jiggles as he struggles to remain standing. Once he has recovered is says, "Yeah, the ship. She's docked on the southside, bay Bravo-34. I'm heading over as soon as we are done here to accept a delivery and have the cargo loaded."

Looking to Evayn, Kaff, and Vicks, he asks, "Alright. Can you make our schedule or should I pick you up on the return trip?"

"Thank you Captain," Kaff says and hefts a small pack, "I've got everything I own right here pretty much. I'm happy to go with you if you want and discuss some of the security details."

Outside the velvet room, Kaff heads to the bar and gets the barman to return his blast rifle. He looks at the Captain and taps the blast pistol on his hip, "side arm," he then hefts the rifle, "long arm."

OOC: If he is traveling to the ship with the Captain.

"So Captain, do you have a policy for weapons on board? I know the saying that 'a heavily armed crew is a polite crew', but I don't really buy that. Do you want weapons stowed away? The captain smiles and moves to the curtain to let everyone out. Once open, the no-so precise heavy metal sounds of The Tin-heads fills your ears. Moving quickly through the bar and out to the street, the captain then turns to Daine and says, "Oh sure, there are a pair of workbenches with shelves and such. Should be plenty of space, once you get there. The passageways on the ship are just a meter wide, which is plenty, even for me." With that, he pats his gut a couple times and grins. He continues, "Seriously though, the sooner you get loaded, the easier it will be. Once the cargo is in place you'll have to squeeze past it to get to the work area."

The captain looks up and turns his head around, "Well, sounds like we should probably get moving, the local Constables are probably on the way to investigate the shooting. I'm sure they'd let us go, eventually, but I've got a schedule to meet."

With that Evayn, Kaff, and Vicks start for the ship while Kera and Daine head off to get their stuff.

Kaff says, "So Captain, do you have a policy for weapons on board? I know the saying that 'a heavily armed crew is a polite crew', but I don't really buy that. Do you want weapons stowed away? Do you have an arms locker or a place we can use as one? Or are you just happy if people keep their blasters and such in their quarters?"

Sirens blare as a pair of law enforcement speeders pass by on the way to the Neon Supernova.

JZ frowns and then smiles and says, "Well, I guess I never really thought about it. My first crew was a bunch of my hometown buddies and we all trusted each other, having grown up together. The second crew was hired from a staffing agency. They were not permitted to carry weapon as part of their contract. The only weapon I ever saw them with was an old style sporting blaster in a framed display case. Real fancy looking, like Evayn's, but quite a bit older. Corto, the old first mate, had it as a family heirloom."

JZ continues in silence a bit and then adds, "I don't think we have a locker right now, but we could certainly have our engineer fashion one for us. If need be, you could leave all the weapons in the cargo hold. With the air leak, the cargo hold is inaccessable in space. You'll just want to make sure you tie them down so one doesn't accidentally fire. Things get tossed around a bit in the hold with the pressure changes as you enter and exit the atmosphere."

Kera

"Then we'll get our rears in gear." Kera lets Daine catch up, then they turn a corner and part ways with the rest to go retrieve their gear. Letting out a mock sigh, "oh my, I suppose I shall have to push if we are to avoid having to unload all your stuff to get it onto the ship. And my slave has the grapes chilled to perfection already; we will simply have to throw them out." She loses the fake remorse with a chuckle and picks up the pace. "I was beginning to think we'd be stuck on this stupid rock forever. The pay isn't spectacular, but as long as he actually forks it over, that's good enough for me."

"Having all the weapons locked down during flight is probably a good idea," Evayn says, keeping pace with the captain. He shrugs, doing his best to remain nonchalant as he adds, "If I may say, though, if we're assaulted by pirates or detained by corrupt law officials, it might be better to have access if we need it. If diplomacy fails, sometimes a blaster pointed at the right head can make all the difference."

The flashing, garish lights of the nearby nightclubs and bars reflect off the tinted lenses of his glasses as he smiles, continuing, "However, I'd be happy if Security Specialist Chalma here wants to hold the weapons until a proper locker is installed."

And, he thinks to himself, if he's just trying to get us all weaponless so he can go mynock-s**t crazy, I can probably buy him off anyway.

Vicks sighs, He new he had two weapons on him but he wasn't sure he felt safe without them. Daine

Daine and Kera return to their temporary lodgings in the city and he sets to gathering all of his belongings, mostly any tools he had out, back together into a largish hovercart. "I cannot say how happy I am to get off this place and back on a ship," he remarks idly to Kera, "Especially if he's not jerking us around. Sounds like its going to busy for the first while." There was almost an excitement to his voice. "Not that I haven't enjoyed our vacation."

He snaps the last tool into place and closes the lid and leans against it looking to Kera. "Hmm..." he says with a slight grin as he circles the cart.

...

He punches a button near a handle and the cart rises a bit off the ground. "All ready to go?" he asks Kera before starting off towards the hangar with his belongings. They should arrive slightly longer than an hour after they left the bar.

As they move toward the starport, Kaff considers the words of both the Captain and the new First Officer.

Kaff still has his helmet on and his voice is still a little distorted by the filter mask even though he is still breathing normal air. "I agree with first officer Ith . . . I'nay . . . I agree with the first officer. We don't want to get caught without weapons. How about we just say that after lift, everyone, including myself, keeps their weapons in their quarters? It keeps them handy but without the chance that someone goes stir crazy and starts blazing away."

The group(JZ, Vicks, Evayn, and Kaff) arrives at the docking bay and are forced to walk the remaining distance to the ship. JZ continues talking and answering questions, but he begins to sweat from the exertion. "I should think that keeping your weapon in your cabin should be fine. The ship is small enough that it wouldn't take much time to access. Anyway, you never get a surprise boarding, there is usually a quite a bit of time as the ships manuever to dock with each other."

He continues, after wiping sweat from his forehead, and turning to Vicks, "As to the physical and computer security... well, the ship itself is probably pretty easy to break into. Some of what you pay for at these docking bays is security. The hatch can be opened from the inside and", he pulls out his datapad and holds it up, "from the outside by my datapad, although a droid could probably break in. The ship's computer won't startup without the passcode from my datapad. Once you are up and flying around, I guess you are secure enough."

Arriving at bay B34, the captain punches up the code to open the bay. He also opens up the delivery doors. "Now that we're here, we can open these up so the cargo can be loaded faster."

The bay itself is a has a semi-circular wall, punctured by the loading doors. Where the open half of the circle should be, there is a raise elliptical platform. On the platform stands the ship using its landing gear, a trio of short squat legs.

The ship is painted mostly in grey tones with some obvious patch jobs. The aft is facing you as you enter. As you walk around to the side, you can see the ship is probably 20 some meters long and 10 meters tall. At the front, rising above the 10 meter line is another pod, presumabily the bridge, which contains windows.

As you think about it, the ship does, kind of, look like a mule. A long 'boxy' body with the bridge being the 'head' and landing gear for legs.

While the new crew takes in the ship, the captain walks up to the rear of the ship and opens the main cargo doors and says, "Ah, there we go." Looking to the datapad, he says, "We've got 45 minute till the cargo is delivered. Let me show you the layout and you can look around and get acquainted."

As the Captain begins to show the new crew around the ship, Kaff tenses and prepares himself. The moment was nearly upon him, he would have to be quick to beat them all but he had come up and won against opposition like this before.

As they walked through a narrow companionway toward the crew quarters Kaff stretched out with his senses as best he could. He listened to footfalls and breathing, tried to guess if anyone else was tense. He needed to be ready . . .

Then he pounced.

With the barest of looks inside to make sure the room was clean, Kaff shouted. "Mine! I'm calling that room! It's mine."

Kaff knew from long experience that administrators and ship captains were mostly the same. They were very proud of the ship or installation that they had charge of and would almost always show the best rooms first. If you waited you usually ended up with the smallest, piece of garbage room just above the gurgling waste recyclers and just below some whirring piece of engineering no technician in the galaxy could identify or quiet down.

JZ watches as the cargo door swings down with a puff of smoke, steam, or something from the hydraulics. The captain walks up the ramp into a main cargo hold.

The cargo hold is 9m by 16m with almost 4 meter high ceilings. The hold is almost totally empty. Along the floor is an alternating yellow and black stripe which marks out the center of the room, a 7m by 14m area.

In the middle of the room someone is mopping the cargo area. It is humanoid, seems to be male, and looks basically human except for being just over 1m tall. Upon seeing the captain, he drops his mop and runs over. Stopping in front of the captain, he bows his head and drops to one knee whilst saying, "Welcome back Your Majesty. Your loyal subject awaits your command."

JZ smiles and says, "Thank you Trill, it is good to be back. You may resume your duties."

Trill stands up and runs back over to resume mopping. JZ turns to the new crew members and says, "That’s Trill. He's not all there, if you catch my drift. Seems to think I'm the King of Holg. Anyway, he's good for morale and he takes care of keeping the ship clean, preparing meals, and that sort of thing."

The captain walks over to the port hull an grabs a plastic laminated card on the small chain. He holds it up, wipes of a couple years of ditry and dust and the holds it up for you to see. (http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l25/dauphinous/mule.jpg).

The captain begin talking, pointing to the card and then to features on the ship to help you get oriented. "So, we are here <D26>. This is the cargo area, pointing to a large pink area on the card<h19>. Just through those doors<h13> are 3 of the crew cabins<e9><h9><k9>, the shield generators<e11><k11> and the ladder<h11> up to the upper level."

The captain continues to point at places on the card as he rattles of places on the ship, "Most of the upper level is taken up with the power plants<s17><w17>, hyperdrive<s21><x21> and normal engines<u26>. There are three more cabins<r8><u8><x8> on that level, and this is my cabin<h8> pointing back to the lower level. These are the kitchen<r11-y11>, lavatories<x14>, and common areas<t13-v15>. Here is the ladder up to the bridge<u11>. This is obviously the bridge<ae11>."

JZ wipes some more sweat from his brow and says, "Well, take a look around. I'm going to get something cold to drink." As you make your way through the ship, Kaff claims the obviously superior cabin<e9> away from the noise of the power generators and hyperdrive engines where he can be alerted if the shield generators suddenly kick on. The captain says, "You can take what ever cabins you want, Kera and Daine will just get stuck with whatever is left. Trill likes to stay on top of things and so he tends to sleep in the back corner of the bridge or down in the common area."

What a heap, Evayn thinks, walking up the battered ramp of the even more battered ship. This thing could fall apart at any moment. Like the captain said, we may not have to worry at all about boarding--the hull will probably rupture, sucking us all out into a cold death by vacuum. Outwardly, he maintains a casual air and nods appreciatively as JZ shows them around. Seeing the wisdom in Kaff's quarters claim, he casually tosses his own gear into the cabin at <k9>. Following JZ's suggestion, he wanders about, getting his bearings on the old ship--despite the conditions, this could still prove to be a lot of fun.

JZ relaxes for while down in the common area until, the quiet is broken by a shrill air horn. JZ hits the intercomm and announces, "The cargo is here, all hands make ready." JZ then lumbers down the ladder, across the cargo area and out of the ship.

Waiting at the entrance to the bay is a hover transport. JZ waves the driver in and motions towards the cargo bay. Once the transport is positioned, the driver, a female Bothan, exits the vehicle and approaches the captain. After several quiet words, she transfers the invoice from her datapad to his.

JZ looks over the invoice and smiles. JZ turns around to direct the crew. "Okay, lets get this loaded. Vicks, can you check off the cargo from the invoice as we load it on the ship? Evayn, can you grab the portable hoverloader? Its stowed in the cargo hold, starboard-aft." Motion near the entrance attracts JZ's attention. Kera and Daine walk in pushing another hoverloader with a large tool chest. JZ smiles. "Excellent, here is the rest of the crew. Kaff, can you secure the bay door and keep watch, I don't want anyone to surprise us while we're busy. Kera, come over and give us a hand getting this loaded. Daine, stow your gear in the ship and come help."

JZ pauses to make sure everyone is in motion and doing their jobs.

Kera

Now wearing her padded flight suit, Kera smirks at something Daine said right before they entered. "Just put my crap wherever," she says to him, then pauses to look over the ship. Her 'crap' is ostensibly her flight suit helmet and a bag on the hoverloader with Daine's tools. After taking only a few moments to roughly appraise the ship, she moves in to help with the cargo. It could be worse. At least it flies. Her expression is perfectly bright and cheerful, and she grabs the first thing she encounters to start loading without even a hint of complaint.

Noticing the card with the ship's layout, but not getting close enough to take a good look at it, she says, out loud but not directed at anyone in particular, "what are the chances there are still two adjoining crew quarters left?"

Daine

Daine chuckles at Kera's smirk as they walk up. "Aye," he says to JZ then pushes the cart into the cargo bay, pausing slightly to eye the diagram. He frowns slightly, eyes shifting from the door into the ships interior and his tool chest. He guides the chest into the front corner of the cargo bay and sets it down. He makes a quick job of pulling several tools he thinks he might need from it and dropping them into his pack.

He heads into the ship, glancing around to familiarize himself with it before climbing up to the upper level. He tosses his bag into the starboard side room<X9>, the closest he could get to the engines. He was happiest with being able to hear their hum and the workings of the ship. Heading back out, he sticks his head into the room straight down the ladder from the bridge<U8>. Not seeing anyone's things, he tosses Kera's bag and helmet onto the bed, then heads back down.

"So, where we headed first?" he asks. "Anywhere that I might get a chance to seal up the cargo hold?"

As he helps load, he tries to spot any problems in the bay that look obvious to him.

When Daine returns and inquires about the destination, the captain says, "That'll have to wait till after we get this loaded. Hey, could you move your tool chest to the upperlevel? There is a 2m by 3m alcove just forward from the conventional drive which you can use as a workshop. We need all the room down here for the cargo."

After that, JZ gets back to work unloading the truck and loading the ship.

Daine

"Sure thing," he says and moves back to the toolchest. He reactivates the cart and and moves it by the door, then sets it down. A few latches later he begins hauling the broken down chest up into the ship, taking it to the rear alcove, one(of eight) cases at a time.

"Sorry about the time there," he says as he returns to the cargo bay once he's completed carrying the cases up to the alcove. He then starts helping carrying the cargo into the bay the best he is able to, eying the bay for obvious failures as he does.

Kaff

After dropping his pack containing a few changes of clothes in his cabin, Kaff returned to the hold and took up a watch position (e27).

He saw the hover transport move up and despite some questions from the driver, Kaff waited until the Captain came up and motioned the vehicle into the bay.

Kaff set his rifle aside and was about to assist with the loading when the Captain told him to keep watch. 'Fair enough', he thought and picked up his rifle. He waved the Bothan in the transport out of the hold and then shut the hatch to take up a new guard post (L21).

Kera

Kera does the best she can, but it becomes clear pretty quickly that she's not much for heavy lifting. "I'll be right back," she says, heading farther into the ship. Taking a minute to stack Daine's tools on the floor, she requisitions the hoverloader they brought and takes it back out to help with the cargo. Then she starts ferrying the loaders back and forth while still moving the small stuff and offering a hand with the really big stuff.

{I think you misunderstood, Lord_Kimboat. JZ wanted Kaff to shut the landing bay doors, not the ship's cargo hold door. We're still loading the ship, and that would just make it take longer. :P}

Evayn retrieves the hoverloader and sets about doing his best to move the cargo aboard, although it might be clear to anyone watching that he's not used to manual labor. He remains cheerful, however, taking note of the more experienced Captain's directions. All in all, their were 39 boxes :
4 large cubic boxes 3m by 3m by 3m marked 'Exo-Atmospheric Portable Shelters'
34 small cubes 1m by 1m by 1m marked with various identification numbers but no labels
1 medium box 1m by 2m by 3m marked 'Collapsable Kuat Systems Zulu-9 class spacecraft'

The medium and large boxes have their own built in antigravity generators. None of the smaller boxes do, though some wouldn't need it. Several of the smaller boxes only weigh 4-5kg. Of course, some of them weigh closer to 200kg. It took 15 minutes to get everything loaded and another 15 minutes to secure everything within the cargo hold with tie-downs, clamps, and such.

Once complete, JZ and Kaff escort the driver out, secure the landing bay, and return to the ship. JZ says, "Sorry about that, what a way to start. Lets get this ship moving and into hyperspace. Then we'll sit down and I'll explain everything and show you the ship's finances and such. The bottom line is, the delivery company would have charged extra to load the ship and I need every credit to pay off the ship."

The captain starts to head upstairs and then turns to Vicks, "We got everything right? Can I get the datapad back, I need the codes off it to start the main computer."

Turning to Kera, "Okay hotshot, lets see how good your astrogation skills are. Plot us a hyperspace jump to Wezen." Looking to Evayn, he says, "Maybe you can double check the calculations, I'm not sure the ship can survive running into something."

Seeing Daine, the captain then adds, "We are going to an Asteroid Mining outpost in the Wezen system. The output hangar bay is large enough for this ship, but we won't be there for very long. We only have a single hull plate, but if you can get the leak fixed in that time that would really help."

{{OOC For simplicity, you use hull plates to repair hull points }}

Evayn heads to the bridge and accesses a console, gathering the information necessary for Kera to make her jump calculations. While inexperienced at calculating jumps personally, he does understand what is needed for such work from his knowledge of hyperdrive technology. I'll need the most recent available data, he thinks, wondering just how out of touch this section of the galaxy might be. "Wezen's still in the Outer Rim, correct JZ?" he asks. This jump shouldn't be too long. I don't suppose we have Holonet access here?" he says, trying to pull up the best information possible. Swearing internally, he makes a mental note to learn how to calculate jumps himself ASAP.

Grinning, Kera follows JZ up to the bridge and sets herself down to start plotting the jump. She watches Evayn to see if he can get anything more recent than the almost week old maps currently available and emits half a swearword when he is unable to connect. Also noting that there is no nav computer or astromech droid, she laces her hands together and cracks her knuckles. "Well, I guess we get to do this the old fashioned way, then." She begins working, plotting in a course carefully. A minute later, she blows out a noisy breath through her mouth and looks up. "You need a nav computer, JZ."

JZ finishes powering on the ship and lifts off. JZ calls over the intercomm, "All hands exit the cargo hold. We're preparing to leave the atmosphere." While the ship ascends, JZ responds to Evayn, "Yes, Wezen is in the outer rim. Literally the next star system from here. You've probably never heard of it because it isn't inhabited. Just this mining colony."

JZ looks over at the astrogation results (http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l25/dauphinous/NavData.jpg) and says, "Just under 24 hours huh? That's not a very good course, but it'll give us a chance to get some sleep and get to know each other. We can also discuss the budget and why a nav computer probably isn't going to be installed anytime soon."

Once everyone is out of the cargo hold JZ moves the ship out to space and executes the hyperspace jump.

JZ stands up and moves to leave the bridge and says, "Why don't we all go down and relax? Maybe Trill will make us up something to eat."

Once the ship enters hyperspace, she stands up and follows JZ down, annoyance fading away as quickly as it came on. She drops carelessly into a chair, draping herself across it with a faintly bored expression slowly creeping across her face.

Changing into his 'other' identical set of clothes, another uniform without any insignia, he goes to the common room. He felt the transition to light speed while he was changing. As he walks in, the lack of helmet and armor gives the crew their first good look at Kaff.

The prospect of making a hyperspace jump without a nav computer or even current data is new to Evayn and he stands more than a little nervously after JZ execute the jump. As this ship shows no immediate signs of exploding or vanishing into a singularity, he joins the rest of the crew in the common area. Dropping into a free seat and leaning forward, looking over the top of his shades, he says "When we get to Wezen, I'll ask around about a nav computer--we used to do a lot of business out this way a few years back, although not in this particular sector. Nevertheless, maybe one of the officials at the mining installation will have heard of me, or at least my parents. What's the going price on just a baseline navicomp anyway?"

JZ looks around at everyone and listens. He smiles with everyone's interest. After Kera's suggestion of an astromech droid, JZ interjects, "My financial focus is on getting this ship paid off. I still owe", he pauses to check his datapad, " 10142 credits. It'd be a real shame if we miss one of the last three payments and we'll be in a galaxy of trouble if we miss a payment."

Looking to Vicks, JZ says, "This trip will pay 550 credits which is 50 credits per 1000kg. We are not selling the cargo, just acting as a delivery vehicle. For costs, we had the 50 credit docking fee on Rutan, 36 credits for fuel, 31 credits for food and 75 credits for rental of the vacuum safe containers the cargo is in." JZ checks his credchip and continues, "That added to the 121 credits I've already got means I'll have 671 credits. I've got 24 days to come up with 3500 credits for the next payment."

Looking to the worried faces, JZ says, "If you all agree we really need an astromech droid, perhaps Daine can purchase a broken one and make the repairs himself. I'd think we could find a broken droid for about 100 credits. However, the nav charts are up-to-date, I just bought new ones. The problem is, Wezen doesn't get much traffic so the last data for that route was 6 days old. For the return trip we can use our sensor data from this jump to provide current astrogation data."

Speaking to no one in particular, JZ says, "Wezen, for those of you who don't know, has no life. I've heard their used to be 3 planets in this system, but they have all been torn apart by some catastrophic event. All that remains is a massive asteroid field slowly spinning around the star. This mining operation is geared towards mining some hydrogen peroxide isotope. Anything other valuables they dig up they save and sell to traders like us."

Turning to Vicks, JZ says, "When we get there, I want you to coordinate the load and unload. I've arranged to purchase 103 tons of discard ore at 5 credits a ton. I'm going to meet with an old friend of mine about a special job. Also Vicks, talk to their shipping office and see if you can sell them our updated nav information. While you're there might as well check to see if they need any new deliveries."

Turning to Evayn, he says, "Perhaps you can go with Kera to find an astromech droid while Daine fixes the air leak in the cargo hold."

JZ leans back and ponders a bit and they says, "I'd like to start making our way out towards Bespin for the Expansion Week holiday. You can usually make some good money ferrying party goers to and from the neighboring systems. If we can get far enough ahead we can relax a bit too."

Looking to Kaff, the captain gets a serious look on his face and says, "As the Security Chief, you've got the hardest job while were are in Wezen. You need to keep everyone and everything safe. This facility is unlicensed and as such things are a bit rough-n-tumble. No one should leave the ship unarmed. The ship should never be left unattended."

Looking around, JZ pulls out his blaster and holds it pointed at the ceiling. He then continues, "Possession, of one of these, is 90 percent of the law out here. Avoid arguments. Try not to upset anyone. Once we've made our delivery our value to this output decreases rapidly. Break any of their rules, whatever those might be, and they are apt to toss you out any airlock. If you're lucky, they'll kill you first." JZ then puts his blaster away.

Returning his gaze to Kaff, JZ then says "I leave it to you to figure out how you can best be of use. So long as Daine is making repairs you can go where you want. If Daine needs to go purchase supplies, someone will need to watch the ship. You get the idea."

Kaff rubs his head while the Captain speaks and then nods once or twice. He even winces when the Captain draws his blaster in the ward room.

“Alright sir,” he says somewhat confidently, “here’s how I’m going to play this. First, I hope everyone has a blaster, if you don’t, talk to me. While on Wezen, I want everyone armed. Even if you can’t shoot, the bad guys don’t necessarily know that and that can buy you some time.”

“Also, on Wezen no one goes anywhere alone. That means you too Captain. I don’t want to have to mount some sort of rescue but let’s face it, we can’t really take off without you. I’ll be happy to go along with anyone who wants to go anywhere but remember, two people stay with the ship all the time. The last thing we want is to have the Mule jacked.”

“My comlink code is 24601.” Kaff finished as he began eating. “Call me every half hour anytime you aren’t where I am or if anything strange happens. I’d sooner you bother me because you found a funny looking coin on the ground or a light fitting that buzzes the tune to ‘Welcome Home Stranger’ than I hear nothing and then Captain Zwillenger here chews me out and has to hire new crew. Again, I’d like this to apply to you too Captain.”

After taking a few bites, he speaks up again, “I’d also like to make a rule here on the Mule as well. When in space, all weapons are secured in your quarters.” He looks significantly at the Captain who still has his blaster on his hip. “I’ve seen accidental shootings and someone you’ve shot accidentally can end up just as dead as someone you intended to shoot. I’m also a big fan of keeping weapons on their stun setting. People are usually a lot more forgiving if the person you shoot wakes up with a bit of a headache rather than never again.”

With that, Kaff shovels the rest of the food on his plate into his mouth and wipes it on his sleeve. “Now, did someone mention something about cards?”

{Kaff is happy to play cards for a couple of hours, basically getting to know his new crewmates. He won’t be seriously trying to win, so will probably lose money – especially if Vicks plays, something about that guy – Kaff will then pretty much sleep for the rest of the trip}

JZ is leaning over the controls as Kera bounds up the ladder to the bridge. JZ says, "You take stick. Remember, Wezen is one large asteroid field, like a rocky accretion disk. We jump in off axis, but we've got to fly down to the station in the middle of the field."

JZ looks to the hyperdrive and then moves to the shield controls and says, "That said, sometimes the asteroids don't play nice and wander up out of the disk. I'll engage the shields as soon as the hyperdrive shuts off in 20, no make that 14 seconds."

When Vicks and Evayn arrives, JZ hits the 'on' button and turns over shield control to one of them and says, "One of you, please keep the shields balanced and stabilized. The other keep an eye on the sensor for other ships." JZ moves to the intercomm and just as he pushes transmit the ship lurches out of hyperdrive.

The ship sits right on the edge of the field. A quick look to the sensor reveals several medium asteroids will soon contact the ship. JZ says, "Daine, please redirect power from the weapon systems to the shields."

The intercomm clicks off and JZ turns to Kera and says, "Get this bucket moving." The reddish glow the Red Giant off the port side gives the asteroids an evil molten appearance. JZ moves up to the sensor and jabs a dot on the screen and says, "That's the place. Take us there. If you see any pirates, you'd better have Daine turn the weapons back on."

Kera

Sitting down immediately, Kera takes the flight controls. If she is nervous about this, it doesn't show in the slightest. She nods once to let JZ know that she got the destination. She spends a few seconds watching which way the asteroids are actually going, then begins turning the ship in a direction that will hopefully avoid them. "Hold on to something. This might be a bumpy ride."

"All hands make ready. We are coming out of hyperspace. Kera, Evayn, and Vicks report to the bridge. Everyone else hang on."

"Guh . . . wha?" Kaff replied intelligently from his bed. After playing cards for a while Kaff had been pretty much out on his feet. He'd been up for nearly 20 hours when the ship had lifted and really wanted to sleep. He hadn't been sleeping well lately.

However, he luxuriated in the bed in a secure room. Kaff doubted very much that any of the new crew wanted to do him harm and so he allowed himself the luxury of 15 hours of nearly uninterrupted, glorious sleep.

Now though, the time was over. He quickly got up, dressed and tidied the bed and his luggage. With well practiced ease, he donned his armor, regretfully noticing the odor that was starting to pervade it. 'Got to do something about that soon', he thought as he connected fasteners.

Pulling down the fold up seat, Kaff then secured himself to that just as the G forces started to play on the ship.

Kera takes the controls and quick accelerates the ship up to full speed, the engines having no trouble accelerating so quickly. The jump left the ship slightly less than 30km from the mining station. At any given moment a variety of asteroids blocks the view of the station.

JZ moves to the back of the bridge and calls the mining station over the wireless and requests permission to land.

This field of asteroid is a fairly even mix of asteroids with diameters which vary betwee 2m and 60m. They are fairly sparce and slow moving. However, they are constantly in motion having been disturbed by long running the mining operations.

Vicks immediately notices a slow drop of shield strength as very small asteroids and asteroid dust constantly impacts the shields. The view out from the bridge confirms that. The shields are constantly a glow with occasional sparkles as a slightly larger asteroid impacts. Within the ship, there is a slight rocking and jarring as the asteroid impact, nothing that would knock you over. Those on the lower deck can hear the popping of the shield generator as it compensates for the constant abuse.

As Kera navigates her way through the asteroids, making steady progress towards the mining station, there are several nearby asteroid collisions which result in the ship being showered in tiny asteroids. After each of these, Vicks reports that it resulted in about a 5% drop in shield strength.

Kera handles the ship well and none of the bigger asteroids gets any closer than 25m. All the same the hard to predict motion of the asteroids resulted in several situations where she was required to adjust engine power and make several sudden turns. Those turns nearly knock over JZ, who was standing at the rear of the bridge. Kaff survived, uninjured, by hold on.

Once the ship was several kilometers into the field, the light of the sun and the stars was obscured. Their glow and sparkle replaced by the glow and sparkle of the shields.

In the end, Kera brings the ship in fast and lands inside the mining station docking bay while the outside of the station glows from its shield generators and tractor beams. By the time the ship docks, its shields are down to 82%.

The ship finally stable, the captain straightens himself, wipes the sweat from his brow and calls over the intercomm, "Welcome to Wezen Mining Station."

JZ then turns to the bridge crew and says, "Power it off. Lets get off this bucket and get some business done.". JZ then starts down the stairs.

Looking behind her at JZ and the others, Kera grins. "Aw, you weren't worried, were you?" Turning back to the controls, she flips a few switches, then gently pats the control panel. "You and me are going to get along just fine, aren't we," she says quietly, apparently addressing the ship. Standing up, she follows the rest out, still grinning. If only it was always like that. Is there anything better than flying through an asteroid field? Oh yeah, flying through an asteroid field and not damaging the ship. Then Daine only yells about things that don't matter much. Like having to find one of his tools that slid away and under the hyperdrive engines. She snickers for no apparent reason as she takes the stairs down.

JZ heads to his quarters to get his blaster and then meets the rest of the crew in the cargo hold when they are ready to depart. Several of the cargo containers are covered in frost. JZ flips the switch and the main loading door opens.

Within the small landing bay several men approach the ship with hover carts and various other tools to unload the ship. The hanger bay could probably have held a ship twice the size of The Angry Mule, but not much more than that. It is quite a bit warmer on the station than it was on The Angry Mule, here in the hanger bay especially. There are various hoses and vents, scattered around the bay, releasing steam into the air.

The captain looks around and says, "As per our security officer, stick together, keep your weapon ready. Don't leave the ship unattended. I've got the launch codes, but that don't mean squat."

Turning to Kera and Evayn, "You two are heading out to buy a droid? I doubt the station store has one, but you should be able to get some leads." He hands Evayn a credstick {{ 120 credits }}. "That's all I've got, but, feel free to kick in some of your own money." he says with a wide grin. "Oh, and when you get back, give it to Vicks so he can collect our payment."

Turning to Daine and Vicks, "Good luck on the repairs." Looking at Vicks he points to a windowed office just off the hanger bay. "Thats where you'll collect payment for this delivery and where you can pay for the ore we are buying. Once you pay for it, the deck hands will load it for us."

Looking to Kaff he says, "You ready? Time to go see Little Johnny." With that he walks down the ramp and towards the main blast doors, which lead to the rest of the station.

Slowly walking through the facility, it is obvious this facility prefers humans, though there are quite an assortment of other species, none have more than a handful members.

JZ says, "The one things I could never get used to on these facilities is the way the air smells stale after a while. I do enjoy the freshness of planetary air."

As JZ and Kaff pass a green skined bald humanoid, possibly a Iotran, who has passed out in the corridor with obvious facial wounds, JZ says, "You think I'm going to have a full crew when we leave? How much you want to bet that we'll have to go save someone from their own stupidity?"

Evayn and Kera head over to the delivery office. Knocking and heading inside they find the office, sparse but clean. They find a humanoid with yellowish green skin, large black oval shaped eyes and head full of tendrils. He is standing next to a comm device while looking at a sensor scanner.

The office is just as humid as the landing bay, but with a slightly salty smell, like an ocean breeze. You can hear a slight amount of static from the comm equipment and an occasional beam from the sensor scanner.

When Evayn and Kera enter, he grasps his hands behind his back, stretches and walks over to greet them. He says, "Most Greetings to Sparefarers you. Moisture what can I you?" With that he smiles, obviously waiting for a response.

Kaff and JZ

Kaff and JZ make their way through the station to the turbolift. Entering and descending 3 levels, they exit in a more quiet and more cramped area. Based on the smells and sounds coming from behind the doors, you'd guess this is residential level.

The walk down the narrow hallway to the door number 204. JZ says, "Ready?" and pushes the intercomm button. Several seconds later, the door slides up and tall skinny human dressed in a blue overalls appears.

The man smiles and pats JZ on the shoulder while saying, "JZ man, you are looking very prosperous. You sure your short on cash? You look like you've been eating well." He says that line and offers a quick jab to the arm.

JZ enters the room, which turns out to be meager quarters with a small half meter square window. JZ says, "I don't know, Little Johnny, how good of deal could you have for me. You don't look like you get enough to eat. You're all bone and skin."

Little Johnny goes to hit the button to close the door when he notices Kaff. He stops and just stares at him for a moment when JZ says, "That's Kaff. He's my new security chief. Come on in Kaff."

LJ lowers his head, shaking it from side to side slowly and then steps aside so Kaff can enter. The room contains an un-made bed, a small desk and chair at the head of the bed and a holoprojector built into the wall. To the sides of the door is some closet space.

Daine works his magic on the exterior of the ship finding a huge number of small flaws to fix. Within an hour the ship is in much better condition.

Daine isn't doing as well by the end of the hour, the heat from the cutting tools and welding equipment combined with oppressive heat and humidity of the landing bay have really made him feel quite dirty and disgusting.

Vicks supervises the unloading of the cargo by the deck hands and waits for someone to return so he can get to work. Of course maybe Kera and Evayn will have some insights into the shipping officer which might negotiations work out better. Evayn and Kera

Evayn and Kera have no trouble locating the security office as there are numerous signs and several languages. Just before they arrive at the Security Office, Kaff checks in. After responding to Kaff, they go inside.

The security office is about 3m by 3m. Along one wall is a row of 3 detention cells, 1m by 2m each. Along another wall is a computer and vid screen. Along the third are a row of 1 meter cube cargo containers, two are closed and the third is open and empty. The middle of the room holds two arm chairs and a small 'coffee' table. A four-armed woman with dark green skin. She is sitting in a chair and seems to be repairing a disassembled blaster pistol, the parts of which are spread out on the table in a very orderly manner.

One detention cell contains a scruffy human male in his late 40s. He wears an eye patch and has numerous scars on his face and hands. His dirty and tattered cloths were no doubt very fashionable 6 months ago. The second cell is empty but the third detention cell holds a sleeping Gungan wrapped in a 'Wezen Mining Station' blanket.

The four-armed woman, a Morseerian, looks up when you enter and two hands move to handles of blaster pistols she is wearing. Seeing no threat, she stands slowly and says in a mumbled voice through some sort of breathing mask, "Hoo .. u, an oo .. ant?" A third hand adjusts a dial on her belt and then she says must more clearly, "Who are you, and what do you want?"

Kaff and JZ

Kaff quickly gets a response from Evayn. Knowing that Vicks doesn't have a Commlink, Kaff contacts Daine, who doesn't respond immediately.

Little Johnny, having listened in, says with a sarcastic smile, "If you need to check on them, don't let me keep you." JZ slaps the arm of Little Johnny and says, "Don't tease him, he's got a tough job." After a pause JZ adds, "And a Blaster."

JZ looks around the small room and says, "Where is it? You said in the message you had something you wanted me to sell." Little Johnny says, "Sssh" and closes the door.

Once the door is closed LJ pulls out a small metal case from under the bed and sets it on the bed.

Evayn and Kera

As Evayn explains the situation to the Station Security Chief, Kera watches the imprisoned older man. He smiles a friendly very non-threatening smile. She continues to watch and he eventually blows her a kiss and then tilts his head to the side subtly motioning towards the cell door control panel.

The four armed woman says, "I'm Niveka Leiker, chief of security here on Wezen. It seems today is your lucky day. I usually wait till I have 3 before I bring them down to be melted and I've only got 2. They've both been here for a week or so and as such you are welcome to pay their fines and take them."

She walks over to the row of cargo container and opens the two closed ones. Inside one(Container N-S-RT4-87392J) is a bunch of disassembled electronic devices, several of the shiny and silver. After a moment you realize the contain holds the disassembled remains of some sort of droid. The other container(Container N-W-RF8-91402W) also has electronic parts, but it isn't obvious this one used to be a droid.

She motions to them and says, "Lets see what the computer has to say." She walks over to the computer bank and after a minute of typing and accessing the interfaces she brings up the reports on them.

She points to the container with the silver parts and says, "Right, okay, I remember this one. This was 1-2B medical droid designated 2-1B-7Y. It attempted treatment on a some drunk after a bar fight. The angry and aggitated drunk happened to have a ion blaster and blasted it. Disoriented, it jacked into the computer system. When station security arrived to deal with the bar fight, it was found connected to the computer system and dealt with."

She then points to the other container(N-W-RF8-91402W). "This one is actually an astromech droid designated R5-N8. The report claims it attacked ", she turns and points to the Gungan prisoner, "the Gungan in the bar after the Gungan spilled a drink on it. Report says it used some sort of circular saw that popped out of one of the compartments."

She disengages the computer and steps up. She relaxes a little, moving one more hand away from her blasters and says, "Well, seeing as they were just going to get melted down anyway I guess I can lower the fee. You can have one for 60 credits or both for 100? If you want just the medical droid, I'll toss in the astromech package from the R5 for 5 more credits."

Yeah, because I'm stupid enough to try something like that in front of the Security Officer. Not your lucky day. Kera's bemused thoughts completely halt when the woman tells them the fines. She stands there blinking for a moment, certain that she must have heard it wrong. Two droids? For 100 credits? She looks at Evayn with what is probably an almost comical look of surprise. Then she shakes her head slightly and manages to compose herself a little better. "Evayn, I think we should take them both. He pauses and listens, turning his head slowly, then continues, "Anyway, I've setup a meeting with the Henn brothers on Rutan 51 hours from now. They've agreed to buy these and potentially any more pieces I find. They'll pay you the equivilent of 10K in local currency. JZ looks dubious, "2K just to bring a case to Rutan and bring money back? Why don't you do it? You know I don't like those Rodians."

Little Johnny looks around, glancing out his 'window' before continuing, "I think my message was intercepted when I setup the deal. I got grounded right afterwards. I had to break into the Shipping Office in order to contact you. With that 8K I can pay someone to smuggle me out and still have a little left over to get started."

Once they step out the door, she calls Kaff on her comlink and tells him, "we found what we were looking for. We should be back at the ship with it in less than half an hour." She immediately turns off the comlink, having no need for a reply.

Kaff

Little Johnny looks around, glancing out his 'window' before continuing, "I think my message was intercepted when I setup the deal. I got grounded right afterwards. I had to break into the Shipping Office in order to contact you. With that 8K I can pay someone to smuggle me out and still have a little left over to get started."

JZ ponders for a moment and then asks Kaff, "Well, it seems okay to me, what do you think?"

(Roll Sense Motive on Little Johnny +0)

Kaff considers for a second. "It's a fair amount for one shipment. Johnny here knows we're coming back and is a friend of yours so I doubt he's trying to get us fragged. Plus, this isn't stopping us from getting another cargo here and taking it to . . . Rutan 51 was it? Me, I say we go for it."

Then Kaff's comlink beeps for attention. He turns partly away to listen while JZ and Little Johnny continue their business.

she calls Kaff on her comlink and tells him, "we found what we were looking for. We should be back at the ship with it in less than half an hour." She immediately turns off the comlink, having no need for a reply.

Kaff opens his mouth to tell her about Daine and Vicks but doesn't get the chance. 'Oh well, I guess they'll find out if the ship and crew are still there when they get to the dock.' He muses, 'and if they aren't, they'll probably let me know.'

Following Kera, Evayn returns to the ship and climbs aboard to retrieve the hoverloader. Shouldn't take too long. This was easier than I thought... Evayn muses to himself. He prepares to return to the Security Office and spots Daine working on the ship. "No trouble?" he asks.

Evayn and Kera and Daine

Evayn and Kera arrive back at the landing bay. This ship is still there and Daine is up on the outside of the ship working on the hull. Evayn goes inside to get the hoverloader while Kera supervises Daine(who notices her approach). The work crews are standing around talking, smoking, and laughing to themselves.

Evayn finds the cargo hold empty and the hoverloaded stowed. Evayn works quickly to unhook the hoverloader and once it is setup and functional, he grabs a couple empty containers and heads out.

Evayn doesn't see anyone about inside the ship but when he comes out with the hoverloader he notices Vicks in the shipping office. Vicks is standing there, shoulders slumped holding his head with both hands looking at the tendril-headed shipping officer speak. Once the the officer finishes speaking, Vicks seems to responds with lots of broad gestures and exaggerated expressions. Once Vicks finishes his 'sentence' his face changes to a mix of hope and fustration. At this point, the work crews release a roar of laughter as they continue to watch the scene unfolding.

{{ You sense Little Johnny is honestly worried, perhaps even more than he is letting on. He doesn't want to do you harm and seems worried for his own safety, perhaps more than he is expressing. }}

JZ ponders Kaff's response for a moment or two and says, "Okay, you've got a deal. Where exactly is this meeting?"

Little Johnny sighs in relief and says, "Thank you, oh thank you. Right, you'll be meeting with the 5 Henn brothers on Rutan, in Titus City, at 'Fat Polur's Bar' in ", he checks the time, " 51.75 hours. Remember, they'll pay in local cash which you'll have to change out when the government offices open the next day."

JZ notes all of this information in his datapad and says, "How much cash we talking about?"

Little Johnny scratches his head and says, "Well, when I was there last year, they used paper credits and it was something like 180 paper credits to a republic credit."

JZ rolls his eyes up and then says, "That a little short of 2 million local credits, maybe we better bring a bag or something."

Little Johnny nods and then hands JZ the case. "Look, I'd love for you to stay and chat, but I don't want them to find you here with that case. You should go as soon as you can." With that, Little Johnny stands up, obviously intended Kaff and JZ to stand and leave.

JZ takes the hint and stands.

{{ Evayn - You get the feeling he is hiding something and really would prefer if you left. He's hiding it well though. Seems like the shipping officer is keeping something back too. }}

Vick smiles when Evayn tells him he's going to stay perhaps holding the smile for a couple seconds too long before he says, "Great, I'd love some pointers, however", with a broad motion towards the shipping officers, "we have pretty much finished our dealings. So, to recap, for the First Mate... I have collected the payment for our delivery of five hundred and fifty credits. I've negotiated to purchase 103 tons of scrap ore for just five hundred credits. Isn't that correct my good Nautolan?" He raises his eyebrows expectantly.

The tendril headed shipping officer smile at Evayn in a friendly manner with a couple of side glaces at Vicks. He then turns around grabs a datapad off the desk while seeming to conceal some gesture or action. He turns around and shows the datapad screen with the contract of sale for 103 tons of ore at 500 credits. He then says, "Trade yes, stone mass much for fifth credit. Vicks blinks and seems to rolls his eyes and then says, "Yes, very astute. Please have them start loading the ore in the ship." With that he seems to scoop with one hand and then dump the contents into the other hand.

Evayn and Kera make their way back through the station back to the security office. When the arrive, Niveka Leiker is back at work on the disassembled blaster pistol. She looks up as you enter. She continues working but says, "Ah, good you brought your own containers. I forgot to mention that I needed to keep mine. Do you have the 100 credits?"

The scruffy male in one of the detention cells sits looking at the a detached silver button in his hands. As he turns it over in his hands, he keeps managing to catch the light just right causing the button to glint and flicker. The motion and the glint keeps drawing your eyes over to him. Kera starts taking a look at the droid parts. After a couple minutes she gets all the parts powered off, but then realizes it'll take more than 12 hours to get the droid to the point it will help with the astrogation calculations.

The droid looks like it was not only blasted several times but that most of the attachments and modules were smashed, probably after it was shot. Some parts have blaster scorch marks, others have dents from hammers or mallets, others have burns from fusion cutters. The droid is a real mess.

Evayn and the Shipping Officer

As Evayn approaches the shipping office he can see the shipping officer intensely focused on something very small. Evayn can't quite tell what it is, as it is obscured by the shipping officers hands. When Evayn enters the office, the shipping officer quickly fumbles the object and secures it in a desk draw.

Looking up with a smile, the shipping officer says, "Most return greetings to sparefarers you. Moisture what can I you?"

"Hello again," Evayn greets the Nautolan. "I was just wondering; how much is the prisoner contract, for the murderer up in Security?"

The shipping officer looks puzzled for a moment then turns around to access the computer. He quickly brings up the 'record' on prisoner. The photo matches the guy in the security office detention cell. Most of the text is too small to make out and scrolls to fast, but Evayn does catch the words, "Murder", "Piracy", "Sedition", and the prisoner's name "Ramius Tellfigeur"

The shipping officer points to the screen, to the number 315 and says, "Man train port bad for 5 credits and 10 credits and 300 credits. You contract?"

Kaff and JZ

JZ exits Little Johnny's room and says, "Seems easy enough." JZ looks down the hallway in each direction, and mutters, "Which way was is back to the ship?"

Daine

Daine continues to work on the hull for a while. After an hour, Daine has exausted the supply of hull plates and has managed to plug all the holes he could find. The ship looks a bit more piece-meal but from an engineer's point of view is much more secure. Maybe a nice paint job will tidy it up?

He turns to JZ: "By the way, they've got a prisoner transfer contract if you wanna pick it up while we're here. Which I really think just means I hadn't paid my bribe yet. Anyway, its best if you have a detention cell to put the prisoner in. We could rent one, but we'd still need to be registered before they'd turn him over to us."

After hearing about Vicks, JZ says, "Well, that lazy... I hired him to make sure the cargo was loaded correctly, secured, and the correct cargo. For all we know we have 100 tons of trash instead of ore." JZ goes to Vicks's cabin and pounds on the door. After a moment or two with no answer JZ enters. The cabin is unoccupied. 'Breach!' Kaff thought to himself. 'I knew something like this would happen! If only Daine had kept a better . . .' However, Kaff left his thoughts there. Daine was busy, he had a badly maintained ship to fix up and security was Kaff's job not Daines. Kaff reviewed his actions and realized that it was unlikely he could have done anything to prevent this. He had stayed with the Captain, the highest risk target. He had tried to remain in contact with everyone, even Vicks.

As the pair approaches the bar and prepares to split up Kaff manages to see Vicks. In the darkness of the bar he can just make out his figure some 30 meters away. Vicks is seated at a table with some miners and seems to be playing cards or some other table game.

{{

Evayn follows Kaff's lead, switching his blaster to stun. Trying to remain innocuous, he moves toward Vicks's table, painfully aware that he stands out like an Imperial Senator at a Hutt banquet. He approaches Vicks and keeps close to the west wall, lowering his head to whisper "Fun's over, we're out of here. Finish your hand. We're leaving in 20," he estimates. Without waiting for a reply, Evayn looks up at the rest of the card players, smiles, and says "Sorry to interrupt your game. Vicks here is due back at the ship. Vicks?"

Evayn and Kaff

The miner's bar is dimly lit with a smokey haze brought to life by the myriad of color from the various holo displays around the room. The center of the room is dominated by a large bar, circled by barstools and capped by hanging racks of glasses and bottles. The bar is tended by a Gran bartender in a miner's jumpsuit and wearing a black apron. In each corner of the bar is a medium sized table surrounded by chairs. Along the far wall are two holo projections of sporting events, while a smaller projection of a news feed is to the right of the entryway.

Tonight is a slow night with less than two dozen patrons. Most of the tables have only two customers and most of the seats at the bar are unoccupied.

Evayn walks into the bar and quickly catches the attention of the majority of the customers. He makes his way around behind a husky human female wearing a miner's jumpsuit with long brown hair pulled back in a ponytail. Once in the corner {{ F4 }} he whispers to Vicks and then addresses the table, "Sorry to interrupt your game. Vicks here is due back at the ship. Vicks?"

Vicks says, "Fine. This hand is a loser anyway." Vicks lays his cards, face down, in front of his disproportionately large piles of credit tokens. Situation solved, Evayn steps out of the corner towards the door. {{ F6 }} Vicks stands slightly and begins to gather the piles of credit tokens which belong to him into his arms. The Devaronian to the left of Vicks places his hand on Vick's arm and says, "Hold on there. We can't let you leave so soon. You need to give a chance to win some of our money back."

Vicks smiles and says reassuringly, "Real sorry about this. I'll be sure to come back in next time we dock here." As Vicks takes a step around the table, {{ H5 }} with two armfuls of credits, when the Devaronian who was seated to his left stands up.

This man is wearing the standard miners jumpsuit unzipped to his waist showing his well muscled chest. His hairless head with its brownish-red skin rises to a few centimeters above Vicks head. From this new angle you can clearly see that his left horn has been broken off and the stump still bears blaster burns. His jumpsuit doesn't fit smoothly to his body, he obviously has some sort of weapon concealed in it.

The husky woman {{F5}} says, "Now, now, Vicks, we were kind enough to let you join us. Why don't you sit your scrawny little butt down before Oxbern takes offense." The woman is also wearing a jumpsuit, has a sporting blaster strapped in a holster at her waist. As she talks she slowly moves her hand to the handle.

The Bothan, who was seated opposite Vicks doesn't say anything, but nods at the woman's remarks. He subtly hikes up his right pant leg revealing a hold-out blaster tucked in his boot.

The Devaronian says, "We'd be happy to hold on to the credits until you return, but we can't let you leave with all our money." With that he forcefully grabs Vicks' arm and shoves him back toward his seat.

Vicks is thrown off balance by the shove and stumbles into the table. As he fumbles to maintain his grasp on the pile of money two playing cards slide out of his sleeve and down onto the table.

Oh, Evayn thinks, this is great. Having stepped away from the group, he looks over at Kaff the moment the miners begin to stand and jerks his head towards them while miming speaking into a comlink. He then turns back to the now quite perturbed group and says "Whoa, everyone just calm down a second." He barely stops his voice from cracking upon seeing Vicks's 'extra' cards drop from his sleeve. He continues "Let's no one act without thinking here. We'll work this out, but let's slow down before anyone does anything irreversible."

Daine sighs softly and shakes his head. "You're off the hook, this time," he says winking at her and smiling as he pulls a roll of tape from his repair kit and attempts to cover the most bare of the wires. "I'll go tell JZ we need a ra..spid... we need to gas the ship."

Daine and JZ

With the bare wires sheathed in tape, and a loose connection tightened, Daine heads down to talk to JZ.

JZ is in the processof ratchetting down the straps which hold the containers in place when Daine interrupts, "Hey JZ, we may have a slight problem, rodents are snacking on the wires.". With a grunt, JZ locks the mechanism and looks up and says, "What? No, that can't be. Must be old damage, we already took care of the problem. The rodent nest was out here in the cargo area. They can't have survived the vacuum."

JZ wipes the considerable sweat from his face and begins walking further into the ship. Once in the cooler air he says, "That darn shipping officer. He keeps the air so darn hot and humid. Its like a sauna out there. Lets see this droid you bought. You get it working yet?"

Kaff and Evayn

Following the plan, Kaff moves up to the bar entrance, taking position just south of Evayn. {{ Kaff E10, Evayn F6 }} Kaff was able to see most of transpired including the playing cards.

At Evayn's suggestion to stay calm, the Devaronian fumes and charges past the Bothan, knocking him back. The Bothan rolls and ends up squating/leaning against the north end of the bar{{ H7 }}, a hold-out blaster in hand. The Devaronian gets right up in Evayn's face and says, "Irreversable? Its obvious you've been cheating us. You want to make a deal, lets make deal. The three of you", he tilts his head toward Kaff and motions towards Vicks, "leave your weapons and all your credits here with us and all we'll do is call security."

While the distracted Devaronian talks, Vicks slowly makes his way east along the northern wall {{ J4 }}. At the same time the husky woman stands up and moves north, a little further away from the action, and into the corner of the room {{ F4 }}. Several of the patrons at the bar have hopped off their stools and are just barely peering over the bar. With the exception of the Gamorreans, the patrons seated in the corners are ignoring the situation. The Gamorreans have stood up and taken a few cautious steps toward the action.

As Kaff backs out of the bar, to stand over the barely conscious Vicks, he nearly trips and falls on the scattered credit tokens in the passageway. Kaff shouts his suggestion to Evayn and uses his blaster rifle to take another shot at the Bothan. Just as he fires his shot, his commlink squawks, "Kaff, I don't know where you guys are, but it sounds like Vicks is in some trouble. You should get back to the ship pronto. He said he was on his way." Distracted, this time Kaff's shot impacts the base of the bar instead of the Bothan.

The red-skinned Devaronian steps back from Evayn and says, "If you had it in you to shoot you'd have done it already. You're as yellow as your skin." He pulls some sort of small club out from inside is miner's jumpsuit. With a flick of his wrist it extends and with a audible pop starts to hum.

He lunges to charge at Evayn, but stumbles because of the spilled credits on the floor and trips over the Bothan. As the Devaronian falls to the floor his humming club skitters across the bar to the northern wall.

Just then the bartender peers up over the bar and take a shot with his blaster at the husky woman. His shot is true, hitting her in the chest. She slumps to the floor in the corner, her blaster falling from her grip.

Vicks continues to struggle on the floor, but manages to draw his blaster pistol.

The Bothan, moves up into a squating position and takes cover around the corner of the bar. He then fires towards Evayn hitting the edge of the hatchway which is providing Evayn some cover.

Kaff arranges his rifle and heaves Vicks up onto his shoulders which elicits a grunt and a moan from Vicks. The load pushes Kaff's muscles to their extremes. He begins to stagger down the corridor towards the ship careful to drag hit feet so as not to trip on any credits. {{ reduced to 6M movement }}

The Devaronian, neither killed nor unconscious after being shot while down, struggles to find a weapon and only manages to scoop and throw a handful of credit chips at Kaff/Vicks. The attack fails and the credits falling to the floor before even making it to the doorway.

Another blaster shot comes out of the bar and impacts the far wall of the passageway. Its not clear where the shot originated, but it wasn't really close to hitting anyone.

Kaff hustles down the corridor as fast as he can carrying Vicks. Vicks, for his part, decides fire his blaster at the Gamorreans. His shot hits the female in the side of the head. She collapses in a heap, her credits scattering across the floor.

The male Gamorrean howls for his fallen companion and grabs her blaster. Evayn, who was easily keeping, pace with Kaff, his focus on deterring pursuit, fires to surpress this new foe. Unfortunately, his shot also impacts the male's cover, his fallen female companion.

The male Gamorrean, totally enraged by this further insult, charges firing wildly. The Bothan peers out into the hallway as the Gamorrean charges away from his fallen companion and their credits. He takes aim and shoots Kaff. Luckily for Kaff, the shot impacts his cover. However, this one in a million shot, hits Vicks in the back of the head as he bounces along on Kaff's shoulder.

This latest damage, adds the smell of burnt hair to the smell of burnt flesh and bar smoke in the hallway.

Evayn, Kaff, and Vicks round the corner into the next stretch of hallway before anymore shots are fired. Evayn and Kaff and easily hear the angry grunts and heavy thudding of footfalls as the male Gamorrean continues the chase.

The ship seems ready for flight. All you need is authorization to launch or at least and open hangar bay door. The engine and shield seem to be powered up and ready to be engaged. The weapon systems are still offline with their power re-directed to the shields.

Evayn and Kaff manage to cover the last 70 meters to their Hanger Bay without another shot fired. Rounding the corner into the hanger bay, they can see JZ and Daine waiting for them just inside the ship with their blasters ready to help out.

As Evayn and Kaff approach the ship, JZ says, "If Vicks didn't want to leave that bad, you could have just left him. No need to carry him out." Kaff carries Vicks into his quarters and places his in his bunk. JZ arrives a moment later with a med kit. Working quickly, the trio attends to each of Vicks three wounds. There isn't much bleeding, but more of a slow oozing of bodily fluids. Once the wounds are attended to, they check his overall condition. Unfortunately, his heart stopped. He is gone. JZ whips out a resuscitation pack from the med kit and gives his best effort, but all to no avail. Finally resigned to the loss, JZ drops to his knees next to the bunk. The crew can feel the ship weave in and out of the asteroid as Kera expertly pilots the ship through the asteroid field. "Dang dang dang, Dang!" JZ says pounding his fist on the side of the bunk.

Just then, the ship groans, and the shield generator whines as multiple diminutive asteroids(1m in diamter) impact the shields. Daine observes the shield strength drop to 90% and he begins working the shield controls. A moment later, the ship lurches to the side and everyone, not straped down, is throw against the cabin wall. The lights dim and this shield generator cuts out as a large thump is felt and echos through the ship as a small asteroid(24m diameter) glances off the shields and then the hull. The shields collapse and are at 0%.

Daine scrambles to work the shield controls and quickly restores some shield strength(30%). Just in time the shields are back up, for more shield impacts are felt as at least two more small asteroids collide with the ship leaving the shields at(20%). Kera continues to dodge and weave the ship through the asteroid field. As a secondary effect of her piloting, Evayn and Kaff remain mostly pinned to the walls of the cabin. JZ remains by the side of the bunk, clinging to the bunk for his own safety.

Daine continues to strengthen the shields(28%) despite the continued shield impacts, at least until a fast moving tiny asteroid(14m diameter), blindsides the ship. The impact throws everyone across the cabin and knocks Vick's body from his bunk. Once again the lights dim and the shield generator cuts out(0%). The asteroid impact echos through the ship for a few seconds before being drown out by the whining of the engines as Kera continues her hard flying technique.

Moments later, the shield generator is heard coming back online, as the ship steadies, as a result of Daine's efforts(14%). The G-forces release everyone from the walls and even the slight pinging of small shield impacts stops. Kera has navigated the asteroid field, again, though perhaps not as successfully as last time. Daine continues to work the shield controls and quickly restores the shields to 100%. The shield, now well away from the danger of the asteroids, sits 10km above the plane of the asteroids. Weapon power is still re-directed to the shields.

Kera

Pulling her hands off the controls, Kera takes a deep breath. She quickly glances over all the indicators to see if anything is going wrong, then looks over at Daine with a smirk. Before he can even open his mouth, she says, "no, I didn't aim for that one." Then she redirects the adrenalin rush into plotting the course for the jump back to Rutan.

After regaining his feet, Evayn shakes his head in an attempt to restore equilibrium after the asteroid collisions. His heart still pounding from the combination of the fight and chase, as well as the bumpy ride, he makes his way to the common area and sits heavily. I killed someone, he thinks, the concept echoing in his skull. He'd known people who had died of course, and he'd never thought of himself as someone who'd be so shaken up by death, but he couldn't remove the images of Vicks, the Gamorreans, and the woman miner back in the bar from his head. Trying to distract himself, he wanders the ship; with the hyperspace jump imminent, it seems there's little to do and he remains troubled, though he attempts not to show it.

He stops in the commons when he sees Evayn sitting there. "You alright?" he asks looking him over.

Kaff continues his shuffle up the ramp and into the Mule. Following orders he brings Vicks to his bunk. As he lies the cargo chief down, he notices that something is wrong.

The Captain enters the cabin pretty much right behind Kaff with a med kit. Kaff has a little medical training, everyone in security had to complete the mandated first aid course.

As Kaff looks into the sightless eyes of Vicks, he fears the worst. Turning Vicks onto his stomach, Kaff notices the large burn in the back of Vicks' head. His stomach lurches unpleasantly as the security officer realizes he can see through the skull. The violent maneuvers Kira is putting the Mule through doesn't help and Kaff leaves the Captain to the resuscitation efforts.

Moving to the common area, Kaff is knocked off his feet with the first big impact. He gets to his feet and looks up toward the bridge but knows that there is no way for him to help. 'I'm just pretty damn useless today aren't I?' he thinks bitterly.

Managing to buckle himself into a seat at the table of the common room just in time to avoid being thrown around the room by the next major impact, Kaff continues to brood.

As they reach open space, in a sudden move, Kaff whips off his helmet and throws it angrily at the wall where it rebounds and hits the floor, finally skittering to a halt.

Evayn sits down across from Kaff at some stage although Kaff doesn't remember it happening. For his part, the First Officer seems lost in his own thoughts as much as Kaff is. After a second, Kaff gets up and gets a cup of water and places it in front of Evayn. "Here, this will help a little." He sits back down and says, "Vicks didn't make it."

JZ comes out of Vicks' cabin and bumps into Daine while he is on his way to the engineering section. His shoulders sagging and head drooping, JZ says, "Vicks didn't make it." Pausing for a moment, JZ then inquires, "That felt kind of bumpy, did we sustain any damage? Oh, and did you check the cargo area? Is the pressure holding or do we have another leak?"

After waiting for an answer JZ heads over to the common area and asks Trill to prepare some food. Soon enough, the ship enters hyperspace and the wonderful smells of Trill's cooking permeate the ship.

"I'll take a look at the cargo hold now and do a complete inspection of the hull next time we land somewhere with atmo," he says somewhat subdued. He alters his course and heads down to the cargo bay to check it out, looking in the window and checking any monitors that might be handy to check conditions inside before opening the door to verify that its safe.

Evayn accepts the water that Kaff offers, not saying much. When Daine inquires about him, he only answers "I'll be alright," then stands and paces the ship for a time. When Kera enters, he realizes that she was probably oblivious to most of what had happened, being busy with readying the ship and piloting the dangerous course through the asteroid field. "Vicks is dead," he tells her, then goes on to explain what happened in the bar; the cheating at cards, Vicks's attempt to leave with the cash, and the ensuing blaster fight and chase. "At least we're out of it now," he concludes, "but I'm not sure how welcome we'll be if we try to come back."

"And now we're hauling around a dead body." This produces a little bit of a yuck face. Then she shrugs. "Well, this jump is only going to take an hour, so we'll be able to unload it before it gets gross." Then she turns without another word and heads down the stairs.

Finding Daine downstairs, she tells him, "this jump is only going to take an hour. That's hardly enough time to get anywhere working on the droid." She watches him work for perhaps 3 minutes before saying, "I'll be in my room." The ship is intact. If Vicks was the type of man to cheat with the miners at cards he probably wasn't the sort of chap I want in control of the finances. Not that, I'd want him dead, but..."

JZ then smiles and continues, "I totally forgot to brief everyone about the special cargo. We should deliver it soon after we get to Rutan. I'm really going to need you with these Rodian brothers. Not the trustworthy type. I think I'm going to want the whole crew there and armed. I don't want to deal with them 5 on 1. At least with everyone there, it'll be 5 on 5."

Placing the document on the table, JZ continues, "Seems to indicate that Vicks was from Varonat. That's over on the Corellian Trade Spine."

JZ sits down and starts to nibble on the scraps from Trill's meal and says, "When we get to Wezen, we will drop off the ore to be sorted and appraised. That'll take 5 or 6 hours. Instead of waiting around for it, we can take care of Little Johnny's business."

JZ leans back and picks at his teeth as he continues, "We are supposed to sell a case of ancient Wezen artifacts to the five Henn brothers. I don't trust them to deal fair with us, so we need to all go and make a show of force. We collect the local cash equivilent of 10,000 credits. We get to keep 2 and we need to bring the other 8 back to my friend, Little Johnny, on Wezen."

"So I don't have to repeat myself, I suppose I should wait to give you the details of 'the plan' till after Kera and Daine finish with their, um, repairs. Say, where did those cards go to?" JZ leans forward with a hopeful smile.

Kaff is still a little disturbed by Vicks' death and also by the Captain's cavalier attitude towards it. 'This his how he would react if it were Evayn or even me.' But he also realizes that this has probably happened a lot. There is little in the way of law and order out here, no company looking out to make sure that everything runs right.

Shaking off the morbid thoughts, Kaff grabs the cards and deals out some to the captain, himself and anyone else that wants to play.

While playing cards JZ looks up at Kaff's question and eventually says, "Well, Rutan is Rutan, I picked you up on Rutan, I guess I assumed you'd been there long enough to look around."

"The ore is being taken to the a place called 'Solid Commodities Traders Inc.' They'll scan the ore and make us an offer for the ore. I've dealt with them before. From what I can tell, the scans are accurate, but the prices are a little low. We could take the ore and try to sell it somewhere else. Lots of places won't deal with such small amounts and we'd have to spend a lot of time scanning and separating the ore for those that do. It just seems better this way."

"Once we've taken care of that, we'll head over to the bar to meet the brothers. The bar is in Titus City a couple blocks from where we met. 'Fat Polur's Bar' I've only been in there once. It seemed safe enough, but it seems to be popular with the Squib community. I just can't relax around them, always getting into things." JZ shivers for a moment and then continues.

"I was thinking that we'd head into the bar together. The four of you would linger by the bar with the artifacts while I go talk to the Rodians with an empty case. If they're on the level, I can take the money in the empty case and signal you to bring the artifacts over. You drop it off and we all back away."

I mean if something suddenly goes down and they don't like the fact that you have an empty case, the Rodians might shoot you before you get the chance to say - 'hey, the artifacts are over there!'. Kaff

Kaff smiled and chuckled a bit as the two crewmembers entered the common area. He had no doubt that what he had seen had been a bit of a performance for amusement. Isolated crews were like that, especially when things went bad. He remembered one time when a mine collapsed at a far flung outpost burying the camps supplies. They had no food and very limited power supplies for a week and every night a group of miners would put on a show by firelight. The talent wasn't great but it was a good way to take ones mind off of an empty belly.

Throwing in his cards, he'd had a terrible hand anyway, Kaff got up and went to his room to retrieve his blast pistol and holster. Returning, he went to Daine and said, "here you go Daine, take this for a while. The plan that we have for Rutan is that we'll have the stuff while the Captain talks to the Rodians. The crew responds to the alarm by taking up posts around the bridge, ready to deal with whatever may happen.

The ship comes out of hyperspace near Rutan. As the crew regains their senses they notice quite a bit of activity in the space above Rutan. Even considering that Rutan lies on a major trade lane, the concentration of space traffic is high.

Kera eases the ship toward the surface and Evayn scans the area. Before the ship has managed to get more than a few km, the comm system activates and the following message is heard, "Attention Cargo Freighter, this is Guardian 314B. Slow to docking speed and prepare to be scanned for contraband. Identify yourself and state your cargo and destination." Evayn reports the message is being beamed to the ship from an Imperial Light Cruiser which is on an intercept course.

Kera looks around and can see the shape of the ship approaching from the starboard side in the distance. She also glimpses what appears to be some sort of combat well off the port side. That combat is too distant to make out any of the ships involved.

After hearing Kera's shout, Kaff recovers his helmet and decides to head to the cargo bay. From here he can get to one of the rear facing blaster cannon mounts, he's not really familiar with heavy weapons like that, 'but how tough can it be?' He thinks to himself, 'point the big gun at the enemy ship and fire.'

Also, he can attempt to repel or even welcome boarders depending on the situation. Or, should the Captain request it, grab and maybe hide the case that Little Johnny gave them.

JZ is momentarily flustered by the Imperial request. He then says, "Um, I'm not really sure. From what Little Johnny told me the case just has old rocks and historical artifacts. I doubt their scanner could distinguish these rocks from any other rocks or even from the rocks in the cargo area."

JZ looks around to see if that sounds reasonable and then says, "Stop the ship. While we wait for them to come to us, plot a hyperspace jump." With a slight grin, JZ adds, "Just in case."

{{
FYI : All weapons can be fired from a 'gunner' position on the bridge or they can be overridden and fired from the gun mount itself. A couple of things to note... If you fire from the gun mount you can't get a bonus from the sensor operator. If you fire from the bridge, you only get as many shots as the operator, while the ship could get up to 4 shots if one person manned each gun.

JZ moves over to the comm controls and responds to the Imperial request providing the requested information on the ship, the ore, and their destination.

Evayn brings up the sensor data for the Imperial Light Cruiser. The ship is a little less than twice the size as The Angry Mule and sports quite a few forward guns and couple turrets. Their shields are currently down. Along the ridgeline at the top of the ship it appears several tiny star fighters are docked. It is approaching at a fairly cautious/casual speed.

Kera

"Okay. I hope you're right." Putting the ship to a full stop, Kera turns to the astrogation console. She looks over the star chart again. We only have recent data for Wezen. I don't really have time to double-check numbers for Merga. I guess back to Wezen is the best choice. That or take a huge risk on flying through a star. Kera sighs and starts punching in a course back to Wezen. We can always take a little more time when we get there to put in a new course for somewhere else.

{I'll take the +2 to the DC for a quickly plotted course back to Wezen. Astrogate check: 16 (http://roll.coyotecode.net/lookup.php?rollid=473)
*gulp* Here's hoping we don't need it.}

The cruiser continues to close on The Angry Mule and just as it enters close scanner range, the Comm System plays this wideband broadcast.

"This is Capt Ruudy of the Freighter 'Ruta Paradise'. We are under attack by 3 pirate vessels. Please help. Our coordinates are <<coordinates>>. Can anyone please help?!? Our engines are down and our shields are failing."

A moment or two later, the cruiser turns suddenly and accelerates towards a battle in the distance off the port side. A message then arrives, "This is Guardian 314B, you are free to go."

JZ sighs, and says, "Well, that was easy. I hate to let the pirates win, but I'd like to check out the asteroid damage before getting into a fight."

JZ walks up to the front of the bridge and puts his hand on the back of Kera's chair and says, "Bring her into land. Just northwest of Titus City, you'll see the smoke clouds from the refinery." JZ then straps himself in for one of Kera's patented landings.

Kera

"No problem." Punching the ship quickly up to full speed, Kera gives the fight a wide berth to avoid any accidental involvement. That asteroid field was probably enough of a thrill for these guys. She grins. Ah, who cares? Pushing the ship as fast as it can go through the atmosphere, Kera only slows down when she can see the smoke clouds. Once close enough to do so, she radioes in to the local flight control, requesting permission to land.

Evayn breathes a lot more easily when the Imperial ship turns away. I may not exactly be a wanted criminal, but probably all it takes is a few credits in the right Imperial commander's fist to get me picked up and shipped back toward the Core. He sits back, bracing only slightly during Kera's descent, and continues to calm himself. Anyway, that governor's probably got a lot more on his mind than his wounded pride. Still, Evayn can't quite resist a private grin to himself.

[I'm back, by the way, and hopefully not asphyxiated in the cargo hold ;)]

Kaff grabs hold of the nearest stanchion in the hold as the ships inertial compensator's whine in protest. 'Blast!' Kaff thinks and is about to jump into the gunnery position to fire it up, 'we must be really under attack if Kera's moving us around like this.'

After Kera radios for authorization to land, the response is, "This is 'Solid Commodities Traders'. You are cleared to land on Pad 1. Please orient you cargo bay with heading 285 for automatic unloading. Be sure to report to the delivery office once you land."

{{ DC 10 to land with the exact proper alignment. }}

JZ smiles and using the intercomm says, "Welcome to Rutan. Prepare to land".

He clicks off the intercomm and says to Evayn and Kera, who are on the bridge, "This should only take 15 or 20 minutes. I'm not sure what the crew wants to do after that. We've got 39 plus hours till the meeting with the Rodians. My internal clock says its almost bed time, so I'd like to set down on the outskirts of the city and get some sleep." JZ looks out at the lights from Titus City and says, "Looks like it is night time here too, probably about 22:00."

Yawning, JZ continues, "In the morning, we should probably locate some work. I'd hate to leave the system with an empty cargo hold. Even if we don't deliver to Wezen when we drop off Little Johnny's cash, maybe we can find something in that directions. Menkar or Pulcherrima are just past Wezen."

Kera

Kera brings the ship in like a bullet, dodges deftly around another ship, and spins it around to land as directed. "Yeah, I could use some shut-eye myself," she says casually while swooping around. "Between Evayn and me, I'll bet we could scare up some work." The landing itself is gentle, and she is already unfastening her harness while the ship is still settling onto its landing gear.

Daine

Daine stabs the comm next to the console he was watching the power systems on as he notices the draw to the aft cannon. "Stand down on the gun," he calls over it. "This is how she always flies. She likes to come in hard," he says with a chuckle. He leans back against the opposite wall where he had wedged himself, one boot firmly placed next to the console to hold him in place as the ship swooped its way to the pad. As the ship settles he runs starts a diagnostic on the ships power systems, keeping his foot securely wedged until he sees Kera coming down from the bridge.

"Yeah, I'm pretty beat too." Kaff says as he climbs back up to the rec room, "I'll watch the unloading of the cargo and then hit the sack. Uh . . . we should probably also do something about . . . uh, you know - Vicks."

Kaff pauses a minute before continuing, "and we should probably see what we can do about these spidermice - whatever they are?"

Kera

Coming down the stairs, Kera gives Daine a smirk as she sees him unbrace himself. "No point going slow here. The sooner we can get the cargo out, the better. The spider mice can wait." She heads to the cargo bay to get the bay doors open.

JZ shudders when Kaff mentions Vicks. After a moment or two JZ says, "I guess, if Kera and Evayn are going to line up some cargo, I can head into the Titus City government offices and register his death. I am the captain after all and that makes it my responsibility. Maybe I can find some information on whatever death customs they have on his home planet while I am there."

JZ gets up and makes his way down to the cargo area to supervise the unload.

Daine

"I'll start checking the ship over, see what I need to pull dents out of then," Daine says with a slight smile. "Make sure the cargo hold is tight as well," he adds. "Might as well make sure we can handle any cargo."

Kera heads down to the cargo hold and struggles to open the door to the cargo hold. Looking through the window, the cargo hold floor is strewn with small rocks and debris. When JZ arrives she steps aside and he puts his weight into it. The door opens with a crack. The grating on the floor is covered with small rocks and pieces of ore which got shaken out of the ore containers.

JZ crunches his way across the debris to the main door controls and opens the outer door. A warm breeze blows through, instantly freshening the air in the cargo hold. JZ turns around to Kera and says, "Nice flying hotshot. Grab a shovel and see if we can get some of this ore back in the containers before they are fully unloaded."

Turning back around to exit the ship JZ is startled to find a silver protocol droid standing at the hatchway with a data pad and portable scanner. The droid uses the scanner, and begins tapping out data into the datapad while it says, "Five standard Talkos Mark 3 containers, opening has 2.16 meters lateral clearance and 1.3 meter vertical clearance."

Turning to JZ the droid says, "Greetings. Welcome to 'Solid Commodities Traders Incorporated'. I am C-6Y2. I see you have a load of ore for processing. May we begin the unloading and processing of you delivery?"

JZ slaps the droid in the shoulder as he walks by and says, "Of course, of course. Start right away." JZ steps clear of the ship putting his hands over his ears. Daine follow JZ out of the ship and begins inpecting the hull for recent damage.

The droid staggers from the slap and the uneven footing and says, "Thank you. Due to unusual delivery volume we don't expect your ore to be completely evaluated for approximately 7 hours, 52 minutes, 16 point 2 seconds. You will need to return at that time for your estimate."

Without further ado, a large mechanical armlike crane unfolds and swings out and grabs the ore container closest to the exit. Once secure, the arm slowly swings it over and begins pouring the container of rock into a large cone sticking out of the ground near the landing pad. The noise from the dumping rock is totally deafening.
