View Full Version : Rorschach?

Inspired by today's google doodle, I read the entry on wikipedia about the Rorschach ink blot test. Most of them are ambiguous, but the first one seems plainly obvious, though most people apparently 'see' moths or somesuch nonsense.

How could anyone not see that this is a picture of a robed magic-user of somekind, holding his hands (or pincered claws) above his inhuman head, while summoning two were-bears from behind him?

Clearly a picture of an illithid casting phantasmal killer.

For some reason, I thought of the iconic Decepticon symbol- not the whole face, just the lower part of it.

The picture is sideways. It's obviously an elephant looking at its own reflection in the water.

Perhaps I am not qualified to draw this conclusion, but I feel compelled to say that YOU'RE ALL CRAZY! ITS WEREBEARS AND THEIR MASTER!

No, see, it's definitely phantasmal killer. Phantasmal killer creates an image of what the target is most afraid of, and the creatures you see as being "summoned" are clearly werebears with giant drills for forearms.

Six-winged Seraph in a robe.

I thought it looked rather like two multi-winged angels kissing, each raising a hand above their head.

Call me loopy, but all I see is a pair of dire chihuahuas.

Goblin's face. He's got a long pointy nose. Such a cheerful smile and a look of mischief in his eyes.

It's clearly a griffon with a rabbit's tail standing on a mirror.

I don't know about all of that. Every time I have ever done one of these the test facilitator has gotten upset when I tell them "It would be ridiculous for me to repeat several times that the first thing I see is a piece of paper with ink blotted on it... Therefor I will tell describe to you the SECOND thing I see."

Surely you meant Piglet looking at his own reflection in a puddle...

This is a wonderful thread.

If there's interest, perhaps we should expand? Anyone else want to link some ink blots in which they see something from an RPG setting?

I thought this was going to be an alignment discussion about the Watchmen character.

Anyway, I see the viser of a stylized helm.

It is a delicate, gossamer-winged fairy, which has been pressed in a book.

(Not a picture of one - of course. It's the actual fairy.)

To me, this one looks like a stylized helm (fashioned after a dragon, and with an oversized nose guard).

Yeah, I thought this would be about that character as well, and got a bit excited because my profile image would be relevant.

Any fool could see that he's Lawful Neutral, of course.

I see a pair of elephants with their trunks and legs fused together. :smallconfused:

The first one? Mostly a mask/visor of sorts to me, although I can see the bear summoning.

The scond one, though? Ghaunadaur's profane, shadowy figure with his slimy tentacle hands reaching for your mortal soul from under his flowing robes with a stylized popped collar. Admittedly, though, his head looks less like a Drow and more like an alien but I think Ghaunadaur's connection with the dark elves is kind of incidental anyway.

Hmm, two bearded wizards with wings and a frog in a dress with its hands in the air between them.
Or a four eyed wolf.

Lawful Neutral was my first thought as well. Of course, he doesn't obey the government's laws, but he always adheres to his own strict code of behavior.

Slightly relevant anecdote. When I was in high school I took a psych class and my teacher did one of these tests on me. When he asked what I saw, I responded "The mask from the character Rorschach from Watchmen."

He didn't think it was funny.

This is why the Rorschach test is so silly.

In number two, I first saw a horned helmet, but then perspective shifted and I saw a flying dragon. With elephant tusks.

Number two. It's a man standing in front of a cave mouth styled after the face of a bat.

I got excited because I thought I'd be able to crowbar in a picture of my Hallowe'en costume:

(most people saw "MC Hammer, dancing" in my mask inkblot. Hmm.)

You guys are looking at it upside down, it's clearly Hephaestus showing off his mad forgery skills by hammering two anvils at once.

#1 I see some sort of fiendish rabbit
#2 I see nothing... except for the lady parts on the top. Which makes the whole thing very creepy. And it takes a lot to creep me.

1. It's a Balrog, he's just dropped his whip, that's all.

2. Skull

3. Cowman. Man with the face of a cow.

Here's another classic. The upper part looks like the hilt and pommel of a sword to me, one decorated with either fire- or celestial wing motives. It's stuck in something, but I'm not quite sure what it is. Some kind of giant arthropod, maybe, that's gripping it with its mouthparts. A weirdly shaped tick, those have mouthparts like that.

No — it's a Rust Monster pelt.

I can see that. Alternatively, it's a giant explosion and something winged flying out at the top.

I see a dragonfly carrying a tarp across the sky.

Man, I'm not seeing any RPG elements in these. Except maybe things for Merlanes to make.

...

I think this may be how the the idea of owlbears came into being.

I always thought the first one was a pair of angels, split in half.

The second one was either a dragon or some weird alien empress.

And the third...some sort of ruby rod embedded in a patch of forest. Maybe more of a skull rod, actually...with feathers on it, embedded in stone.
