It may just be me, but I don't really like the pure white of the background here, and would much rather have it be a bit less of a contrast than black/white. Is there any way to change the background colour to something else?

I don't think there's an option built into the site, but you could use external browser plugins like Stylish (for Firefox (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/stylish/) and Chrome (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/stylish/fjnbnpbmkenffdnngjfgmeleoegfcffe)) to change the background color if you know any HTML or CSS.

There may be external resources that make it possible, like the ones PairO' Dice Lost posted, but as far as I know there's no way to do so within the current framework of the forum. It's also unlikely to be added, as the mods have a lot on their plate and have said there won't be any upgrades to the current version of the forum for the foreseeable future.

Try turning down the contrast on your monitor.

Here, use this (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/high-contrast/djcfdncoelnlbldjfhinnjlhdjlikmph) if you have Chrome.

That doesn't really make it much better, considering it affects everything, which makes a lot of stuff look weird. But too bad, then. I mean, the site is certainly still usable, but the layout won't ever be my favourite.

I know Stylish has per-site styles; I use it on these forums to resize post boxes and reduce unnecessary whitespace, and it works just fine without affecting any other sites. The plugin PallElendro linked to should do the same, since the screenshot there shows a "toggle for this site only" option.
