View Full Version : Flavorful Wizard Prestige Classes for Evoker?

After a recent all but 1 person TPK, a lot of us are rerolling.

Our petal psion, bit the dust as well, she wants to make a grey elf Evoker.

Are there any prestige classes that just flow nicely with this specialty for RP reasons?

I like Eunuch Warlock, which got updated to 8/10 caster progression. Requires Evil and cutting off your nuts though. But "mighty spell" fits into the theme of what you'd think of as an Evoker with some signature spells. Leadership for your thralls who are devoted to your arcane might, etc. Not the best PrC... but it's pretty fun.

On a slightly higher optimization? Stormcaster out of Stormwrack: It's Wet Outside. 9/10 progression, the ability for your spells to stun lock people for free, burning spells for AoE stun and damage centered around you, and a few other effects. It feeds into the "single element" trap, in this case Electricity, which is a downer if you face down a lot of Outsiders as I can't recall if they gave Electricity an equivalent of Searing Spell. At the very least the Thunderclap thing where you trade out a spell for a Sonic damage and stun means you can do something with it if you run into immune enemies. And I don't recall any enemies off the top of my head that are immune to both Sonic and Electric.

Slaadi are resistant but not immune to both.

Force Missile Mage+Argent Savant go well flavor-wise with a force-based Evoker. Other than that, not much out there for Evokers specifically as opposed to just wizards in general.

I quite like Spellwarp Sniper: Take an AoE spell with instantaneous duration and turn it into a ray. It allows no saving throw so long as the original spell's save was reflex negates or reflex partial (tip: use it with blasts that carry a rider effect). Furthermore you can use it with any other effect that affects rays (such as Split Ray). I want to import it into pathfinder and combine it with Dazing Spell.

I never realized there is so much stuff for force subtype.

Suprised there is not firey wizard of doom or something lol. Or some sort of elemental (not creature), but acid/electric/fire/cold elemental classes.

Force Missile Mage is quite famous.

It's not Evoker-specific, but Magelord is a cool PrC that rarely gets mentioned because it's tricky to get into. It progresses SA, so it works well with Spellwarp Sniper, and lets you do some neat on-the-fly prepared spell conversion, so you're never without your favourite boomstick.

Elemental Savant for that fiery mage of doom if you want it.

Unfortunately it's awful. Four levels are maybe justifiable if you're taking the prerequisites anyway and you can't think of anything else to spend them on. More is never a good idea.

I quite like Winterhaunt of Iborighu (Frostburn) if you're going cold focus. Requires divine spellcasting but can advance arcane, and has much better "focus on one element" crunch than Elemental Savant, which just kind of makes you worse at everything.

War Wizard from some Dragonlance book. Among the other things, it gives Cha to AC and up to +3 damage for each dice a damaging spell rolls. So 10d6 becomes 10d6+30.

It's in Age of Mortals (which makes it third-party), and it's actually called War Mage.

The class was also errata'd in Towers of High Sorcery to limit the number of times per day that you could benefit from the bonus damage.

This makes me sad. I liked the class. D:

If choosing to play as a Sorcerer rather than a Wizard (but still with a focus on Evocation), there's the Heartwarder prestige class in Faiths & Pantheons (Forgotten Realms). It requires a few odd feats, but every other level, you will increase your Charisma, thus giving you quite hefty DCs and bonus spells over time. I did this once and had much fun with it.

Incantatrix requires you to ban an additional school of magic (and you cannot ban Abjuration), but it provides solid Metamagic-tricks for you to play with, as well as giving bonus Metamagic feats.

Although unlike Elemental Savant, you can still prepare and cast spells using other elements.

Freaking awesome stuff here.

I'll let her know.

I'm a druid so, anything she sacrifices for being focused on evocation, I'm sure I can make up in some way.

We still have one person who is making their character so who knows what he'll be,.

Awful but flavorful. *shrug*

Is it really that flavorful? I ask because it seems like a fairly generic "I use an element" class. Compared to something like Stormcaster, which is also "I use an element" as the class. But more flavorful as it's thematically tied into the thunder and fury of a storm. Sort of the problem the Fighter class has, it's generalist nature means it lacks compelling flavor on its own. I mean, yeah, you CAN do something flavorful with it. Particularly if you pick an adaptation element to it like Metal or something. But it doesn't really come as a packaged deal.

I agree. Elemental Savant is incredibly boring, as it makes even fewer attempts to specialize in different elements than the Fighter does in fighting styles. They may not be equally useful, but Combat Reflexes, Combat Expertise, Power Attack, Two-Weapon Fighting and Shield Focus at least make the fighters who choose them look distinctly different.

Domain Wizard with Evocation domain

Also, ACFs: Counterfire (PH2), Arcane Reabsorbtion (Dr348 p88), or Focus Caster (DR348 p88)

Frost Mage (unsurprisingly a PrC out of Frostburn) is worth a glance or two if you/she intend/s to blast. It actually helps with overcoming cold resistance and immunity, so you can pick a theme and still feel like you're doing something with it.
