Causes you to hit yourself or hit your allies?

I know of two monsters that I can think of that cause you to attack yourself (Raven-themed monster with gaze, can't find right now) or allies (Du'ulora Quori from Secrets of Sarlona 153) but unfortunately they're not SLAs but Supernatural abilities.

The intent is to create an Encounter Trap (Dungeonscape 120) where the PCs come across a statue that is so horrific they begin to mutilate themselves or each other. The PCs would need to work together to go about destroying parts of the statue and/or disabling its effect.

I just stumbled across Encounter Traps and I'm really enjoying what they do, instead of "everybody twiddle their thumbs while the Rogue takes care of it".

The CR I'm aiming for is 12, but I could go higher.

Suggestions?

What can you do with... BACKBITER (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=4571.msg84857#msg84857).

Confusion (http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/SRD:Confusion) does on a roll from 71-100.

With confusion (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/confusion.htm) there is at 40% chance to attack nearest creature (possibly a party member). If you are the DM, perhaps create a greater confusion spell that suits your needs.

The obvious Dominate Person (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/dominatePerson.htm) & Monster will make they do anything you like.

Backbiter has been mentioned, but there's a spell that tricks people into attacking allies in both Complete Scoundrel and PH2 IIRC.

Confusion (PH) and freind to foe the only spell I know of that can make you attack your allys.

of the two, confusion is better imo.

There's also both a good and evil one that turns creatures you summon against you.

I should've have known to put "And not Confusion".

The PCs have "all their faculties" when they're doing the cutting. They're not disorientated.

Friend to Foe might not be a bad idea, but I think Backbiter (if it is a real spell) gets the job done perfectly. I don't like Homebrew so I'm going to search to see if Backbiter is for realsies.

And now that its bothering me, anyone know of the raven eyed monster in a cloak that has a gaze attack that causes you to hit yourself? I could've sworn it was in Miniatures or Heroes of Horror but I can't find it.

I'm going to search to see if Backbiter is for realsies.

Backbiter (http://dndtools.eu/spells/spell-compendium--86/backbiter--3872/) is from Complete Arcane & Spell Compendium. Complete Arcane version is limited to two-handed weapons. Unlikely your entire party would qualify. Spell Compendium one looks pretty good.

EDIT: I updated my post to show both CA and SC sources.

Backbiter (http://dndtools.eu/spells/complete-arcane--55/backbiter--520/) is from Complete Arcane. Is limited to two-handed weapons. Unlikely your entire party would qualify.

Technically, it should be sourced from the Spell Compendium, but I believe that the wording is unchanged.

After going through it all, I went with the Death Urge as an Empowered Spell for the Encounter Trap.

Thank you very much for the help! The play ground is great.

Came out like this:
Horrific Statue
Search 27
Trigger: Gaze

Death Urge: If armed, Full Attack self. Hits are Crits. If unarmed, provoke from nearest attacker/Will 21

Duration 15 rds

Destruction: Statue AC 28; HP 54
Disable 31 (2d4 rds)

Now I'm thinking of whether I should add Hardness or how much. The HP and Will save are a little low. The PCs will be fighting another monster with this statue, so its not just a Solo CR 12 but combined with a CR 15 to make a CR 16 encounter. The Will 21 might be too low, but I'm unsure.

It is more interesting of a fight now, as the PCs can choose to fight blind or just deal with the chance that they might kill themselves.

Causes you to hit yourself or hit your allies? Xykon did it (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0448.html) with the Symbol of Insanity.

Do they need to know they are attacking their friends?

Is there a spell that can create a good enough illusion that they think their friends are foes?

That was the Friend to Foe suggestion. I also want them to have their brains, so Confusion and its ilk are out (trust me, I'm a huge fan).

Death Urge was the best suggestion for the theme. I wanted Lovecraftian horror at what the PCs see, which causes them to cut themselves or let them be eaten by the monster. Those who have high Will can avoid the fate and those who can't stop shuddering may close their eyes to fight the strange beast (and/or statue).

Friendly Fire does this for missile fire - I think it is in Elder Evils.

I wanted Lovecraftian horror at what the PCs see, which causes them to cut themselves or let them be eaten by the monster. Planar Binding (Obyrith)
All obyriths have Form of Madness (Sp): Obyriths appear in forms so noxious and horrific that those within 60 feet of an obyrith who observe it are subject to madness.
When a creature first encounters an obyrith, it must attempt a Will save (DC 10 + 1/2 the obyrith’s HD + the obyrith’s Cha modifier). Failure indicates that the victim is afflicted with some permanent form of madness or insanity. The kind of malady and its duration depends on the obyrith. A creature that makes a saving throw against an obyrith’s form of madness is immune to that particular effect for 24 hours. Blindness is no protection against an obyrith’s form of madness—their presence is an affront to all five senses. This is a mind-affecting ability. Chaotic evil outsiders are immune to an obyrith’s form of madness. The insanity caused by an obyrith’s form of madness ability is permanent in most cases, but can be removed by greater restoration, heal, limited wish, miracle, or wish.

Translocation Trick, maybe? Swap places with someone, but put an illusion over both of you that makes you look like the other, as though no switch happened. So your enemy would attack their ally, thinking it was you.

Black Karma Curse (http://dndtools.eu/spells/players-handbook-ii--80/black-karma-curse--2950/) from PHB2 also forces an opponent to attack themselves if they fail a will save, but works with anything they wield.

There's a fun spell in either SpC or PHBII that is like Baleful Transposition, except it disguises you and the enemy as each other. To an outside observer, nothing happened at all, and then they happily beat on "you."

Dire hunger (Spell Compendium). Forces them to bite the nearest creature, but it's not enchantment or mind-affecting.

Bonus points if the trap features a Magic Mouth shouting in a mocking tone "WHY ARE YOU HITTING YOURSELF? WHY ARE YOU HITTING YOURSELF?!"
