I've been looking to play a kobold (with very minor amounts of cheese), and I was wanting to take ranks in craft traps. From what I gather the rules on trapmaking are unrealistic or PCs, so I was wondering if there were any implementable rules for trapmaking or if someone had good ideas. I would also be interested in fun ideas for traps that could be crafted :)

Booby Traps in the DMG II are nice, as it the Trapmaster PrC. If third party is allowed, the Quintessential Kobold has a background archetype that lets you make minor traps as a full round action(provokes AoO, one 5ft square, Ref DC 10+Int+1/2 lvl, 1d6 slashing, may add sneak attack, only 1 trap per 3 character levels may be active, unfortunately it seems to be DM decision on difficulty of the check to create). The Create Device feat could be very helpful for traps.

You could take some ideas from this build (http://community.wizards.com/content/forum-topic/3413191).

Seconding Booby Traps.
I like being an Artificer and setting Unseen Crafter to building them to defend campsites at night or to obstruct passageways that the party doesn't plan on returning to for a while.

I've also looked into using Shapesand (Sa) to replace the physical components for traps you plan to recollect or for traps where the Shapesand will be destroyed so the enemy doesn't get to use it. (Unseen Crafter can help replace lost Shapesand too.)

Have you considered specializing in runic traps and how to use them to their fullest? Explosive Runes book-bombs, glyph traps on equipment, and so on? Maybe start as a wizard and move into geometer, runecaster, or runesmith? Or perhaps dip into more than one?

Fellow Playgrounders who also like being sneaky:
I am both delighted others have noticed this problem and saddened that our collective DM's have yet to help us in this. In my experience the player had to fashion the traps (Malian Mancatcher, punji trap, Explosive runes etched onto the subject eyelids using fluorescent ink), by their own ingenuity.
While this is less than one could hope for, I just wanted to mention that there are ways to work around this.
For example: Brazilian kite string is made using a sturdy chord, ground up glass shards and strong glue. The result is string that can slice through flesh (not joking). Any of a Ranger's snares (simple nooses fashioned for prey to walk into headfirst) could be adapted to this purpose.

//Note: this is a dark part of gaming, and I am not claiming responsibility for where this will lead your party. Razor wire nooses are not lawful good, nor are they for playing with in actual life.

Check out my sig, look at the weapon handbook. Traps make attack rolls, therefore traps are weapons. In fact, there is a subsection called Traps. Not quite the traps you are looking for, but traps that can be used in combat.

HERE (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=4571.msg77861#msg77861) is my work on the spell Create Trap.

I forgot to mention you can always create a giant ramp, telekinesis a boulder at the top, and rig it for a tripwire. It never works mind you, but it is a classic.
