Brief Introduction

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic is a reboot of the MLP franchise by Powerpuff Girls artist Lauren Faust, currently viewed by (almost) the entire Internet, not only the intended audience. Here is a place where we discuss the joy of friendship.

It's a clever show. It has excellent writing, character dynamics, humor, animation, and generally treats kids seriously rather than condescending to them. It has every right to be a 20 minute corporate committee designed infomercial, but it's not.

Pixar technically makes shows for little boys, and produce some of the best animation in the world.

No Brony could ask for more. I recommend watching the episodes in order. They're all up on Youtube. Unusually, Hasbro seems fine with having the entire series up in public because they've made no move to bring down any of the episodes. Search for "Friendship is Magic Episode 1" and you should find the series pretty easily... Or search for "Sharing is Magic" Google Doc. That is all.

Whoa, calm down there. The show is light hearted, optimistic fun but it's not for everyone. It's good fun, the community is good fun, and everyone can do with a reminder that friendship is magic but if it doesn't gel for you we'll love and tolerate you anyway. Plus, you might hit the wrong episode. Ask first?

> Derpy Hooves/Doctor Whoof

Two minor background characters who were adopted as emblems of 4chan. Derpy Hooves is so named due to an animation error in the first episode that had her eyes facing in different directions; 4chan has assigned her the role of Ponyville's mailpony, and her only line so far has been "Muffins". The show's animators are aware of Derpy's popularity and she's shown up a few times recently with her eyes obviously derped. Currently made canon in Feeling Pinkie Keen and in Faust's picture showcased below, Derpy was deemed important enough to appear in storyboards for Season II.

Dr. Whoof is a pony with an hourglass cutie mark; he and his kin save time and space very quietly off camera.

Deadly's Ironically Presented Anti-Spoiler Measures

DO YOU HATE SPOILER TAGS?

Well, Deadly's here to help you get rid of them... with a vengeance! Create a new bookmark in your browser and copy the code below as the link/url of said bookmark. Name it something helpful, like "Spoilers B GONE!" or whatever. Then whenever you view a thread here on GitP you just hit the bookmark and BAM! no more spoilers.

You won't even see the boxes, just the bare innards in all their gory glory.

It also makes sure that no image is wider than 600px, to avoid stretching pages, and will attempt to "intelligently" remove repeated images except avatars. Neat, huh? Sadly that last part means stuff like pony emotes may get lost but the forum doesn't make it easy for me to single out images in quotes as I'd have liked... that's an open problem, I guess.

Tested in Firefox, Chrome and Opera. Should work in any modern browser, but you never know with these things.

I keep getting told that Derpy and Rainbow are the "symbols" of bronydom, although I can't say that I agree. I'm much more like Twilight or Applejack (or both).

As for your other points:

Rainbow Dash losing wings in a sadfic? It's pretty much the easiest way to cripple someone, especially with Rainbow being all about flying. You could do the same with Twilight's horn, but people seem to prefer seeing the big brash character brought low. It's the reason you see so many broken-Trixie fics out there.

Rainbow Dash is the most shipped pony because so many people look at her and think "lesbian." Because of her rainbow hair. Which is quite ironic, as the whole point of Rainbow is not conforming to stereotypes - but then again, if I was good enough at writing to be putting out my own stories, I would do so.

I'm not sure if Rainbow Dash is shown to have a "soft side" any more than Applejack, or perhaps Rarity having a wild side. Or Pinkie having a serious side. Heck, are you sure there aren't more "Scootaloo secretly desires something girly" fics out there than ones that star Rainbow?

It's like the in-universe thing with her and Pinkie. There's an element to which it could be seen as going past exploration and examination into puppy-kicking.

I can't speak for others, but as someone who thinks Dash is great and awesome, who frequently put ponies through a lot of maiming (or so people say, I don't know where they get that from :smalltongue:), and who has Dash pegged as definitely a submissive type (in private), I think the reason is that it's often more interesting to subvert than to follow expectations, and to try to expand and analyze the character beyond what we normally see (or what is normally apparent, at least).

There's not much point in writing a story about a submissive Fluttershy (well, maybe, to subvert the subversion). Even the show writers like to show her wild and dominating side. Dash is a really great submissive type, keeping in mind that this sort of thing isn't about hate or torturing, it's about love and trust. That's no doubt difficult for many to understand, but we're all so very different as people.

Also, few people who write such stories get that across well or at all, but that's partly because it's really, really hard to write such things well in the first place. You certainly won't see it in your average, run-of-the-mill clopfic, or even in some of the more well-written ones, not even in many serious romance fics. That doesn't and shouldn't stop people from trying to express such ideas, though, even if they turn out terribly flawed. The only way to succeed is to make the attempt.

Rainbow Dash is also a very interesting and complex character under the surface. or so I tend to think. You can get very deep and thoughtful about her if you care about her enough to do so. A lot of people seem to fundamentally not get Rainbow Dash, because they only look skin deep, maybe because they don't care about her in the first place.

That may explain some of what you describe, especially where she isn't the focus of the story and only serves a minor role, but I actually doubt very much that most people bother to write stories about characters unless it's because they like those characters, because writing is a labor of love. Putting characters through horrifying and unusual experiences likely isn't done out of any hate or malice towards the characters, but rather out of a genuine interest in them.

Edit: I think what I'm saying in particular is, don't mistake a failed attempt for a successful one, or think that it was intended to be that way. The writer was perhaps trying to express something difficult that maybe they didn't quite understand themselves, and simply failed (or failed to make you in particular see it the same way they did, while maybe other people got something valuable from it).

I'll acknowledge that RD makes the most sense for lose-your-wing sadfics, but my question is about more than just that.

As for depictions of kink, a quick search through Derpiboo.ru demonstrates that you're incorrect. A search for "Applejack, Bondage" shows 460 results, while "Rainbow Dash, Bondage" shows 529 results. Even if you ignore the 136 results with both RD and AJ, that's still around 80 more pictures of RD than AJ.

As for the third claim... Let's see, how many AJ episodes have we had where she flat-out denies having the weakness? Two at least, maybe more. Yes, she admits the weakness at the end, but so does RD when she has similar episodes.

Don't know why, but I had a weird idea for a fanfic. I would probably ever write it because I can't seem to write characters that aren't my own. The premis would be similar to that of why the Drakorans are in the RP thread. Bastara is sent to Equestria in search of a shard. However because of some magical reason he must become friends with someone to obtain the shard. I just think it would be humorous, at least for me, writing Bastara trying to be nice.

I'll admit that this paragraph confuses me. It sounds almost as if you're saying that Rainbow Dash is best suited to being abused.

This still doesn't answer my question: Why is Rainbow Dash so often the focus of abuse? I can think of no fewer than five fics where she's the submissive in a BDSM relationship, plus another three where she's the victim of violent rape and mind-altering 'training.' She's been turned into a baby by Fluttershy. Heck, she's been baked into a cupcake! Twice!

My theory would be that Rainbow is the one who raises herself the highest. She's brash, she's proud, and she's more than a little arrogant. However at the same time there's the hint of self-doubt and insecurity. So a lot of people figure that out of all of the mane 6, she's probably the most deserving of a helping of humble pie to kick her down a few notches.

I'm not saying it's good, but it's a little more interesting to see someone fall from the top rather than a further down point.

Examples:
Fluttershy's too easy, and most people would probably feel more than a little bad about kicking her even further down.

Applejack's proud and stubborn but she's not as cocky as Rainbow, plus she doesn't have the same bit of self-doubt that Dash has.

Pinkie Pie's very out there when it comes to that, but I think there's a similar vibe there to abusing Fluttershy. Pinkie's so happy that there's a bit too much stigmata attached to break her. Besides which, broken Pinkie's essentially Pinkamena, who has a set of issues that make for a much different story.

Rarity would be similar to Dash as a more pompous type that could use a little humility, except she doesn't really try to hide weakness like Dash does. She freaks out over everything so abuse is just a more extreme version of her usual reactions.

Twilight likewise freaks out over little things and doesn't even have brashness. So she like Rarity without the satisfaction of bringing her down.

I disagree. I don't read fics, but I've noticed that rainbow Dash seems to be the favorite from a high percentage of people.

It's like the in-universe thing with her and Pinkie. There's an element to which it could be seen as going past exploration and examination into puppy-kicking.

And I'm sure there are plenty of Fluttershy sadfics regardless. Some people just can't leave a puppy unkicked. :smallwink:

As for depictions of kink, a quick search through Derpiboo.ru demonstrates that you're incorrect. A search for "Applejack, Bondage" shows 460 results, while "Rainbow Dash, Bondage" shows 529 results. Even if you ignore the 136 results with both RD and AJ, that's still around 80 more pictures of RD than AJ.

Maybe try a site with less restrictions what can be put on it? :smallwink:

As for the third claim... Let's see, how many AJ episodes have we had where she flat-out denies having the weakness? Two at least, maybe more. Yes, she admits the weakness at the end, but so does RD when she has similar episodes.

In all three episodes, she admits it and asks for help. Dash doesn't, and judging by MMDW episode even rest of Mane 6 don't think she would.

Well, it doesn't have to be easy. Just needs a little creative effort. Fluttershy has gotten braver and more assertive as time goes by. If most of the fics think it's too easy to have her cry at the drop of a hat (maybe literally to some), that's pretty much flanderizing her personality.

I wonder if, perhaps, it has to do with people not seeing how she embodies her Element. I've run into people who are positive that Rainbow Dash is incredibly bad at being loyal (not counting the people who think she and Applejack should switch; that's a whole 'nother kettle of fish). Twilight is friendly, Pinkie is funny (usually), Fluttershy is kind, Applejack is honest. That last might be somewhat up for debate, but I think the general perception is that she's honest because most people don't account for honesty with the self and ability to realistically judge her own abilities (which is where most of the controversy comes from, I think). Whereas Rainbow has been known to put her ego above loyalty.

Of course, this does beg the question: why is Rarity not similarly victimized? Her moments of generosity are far quieter than her moments of greed or ambition, so if my theory is correct, Rarity should also be a victim to the same degree as Rainbow. And yet she is not. At least, not as far as I can tell.

Maybe it's simply a matter of convenience: who else but Rainbow Dash would brashly stumble into these kinds of situations? None of the others have that same blend of fearlessness and occasional stupidity that keeps getting Rainbow into trouble even in the canon, so perhaps they simply use Rainbow for those particular traits.

Personally, though, I still want to know why Applejack has no famous "psycho-fics".

She accepts help after, in order, almost fainting from exhaustion, being pinned to the ground, and being threatened with the loss of her farm. In none of these instances does she ask for help. At most, she accepts it when it's offered.

You say you don't mean to imply, but you're still saying being dominated is being abused, and the context makes it implicitly s/M. If you have someone enforcing their will over you bodily, that's not domination a-la BDSM, that's just rape. Violating someone else for the sense of power, kinda a big part of the definition. The play version usually removes 'violation' and 'abuse' from the equation entirely.

Show canon has it as Cup. Also without looking it up, I'm pretty sure it was Twilight that said it in "Baby Cakes", and I wouldn't be surprised if Pinkie'd said something there and/or in "Mmmystery on the Friendship Express".

Well, good day! It was my birthday RPG (which is of course sometime after my actual birthday, since usually mid-November is the earliest we can get everyone), followed by party tea. Good session! It was a murder mystery set in a Thayan city in our version of FR's future1, where we called in by a govenerment offical with little no information other than she wanted our help, just in time to see her falling off the lighthouse to her death. This advanture called for tact, diplomacy and investgaive skills.

Sadly, our 14th level party consisted of two Dwarves (who need really no other descirptor thatn "Dwarves..." and Fighter, psionic rogue, a gnome illusionst and my Naruto-ninja cleric/monk... Who with his charisma and social skills formed the face of the party. And by "charisma" I mean, "has charisma 12", and by "socials skills" I mean "has a +16 Bluff and one rank of Sense Motive." (The gnome is the supporting face, since he was the only other character who's charisma is actually as high as +0...)

So. Yeah! We actually spent so long sorting through things, the DM has made it a two-parter! Not to say while we bumbled and stumbled through and investigation that has turned up no real clues it wasn't a huge blast. At the end of the five-hours or so we spent today, what we know can be summed up in, like, a few sentences.

The woman had found out something recently, had been a bit down for a few weeks. She was a rising star in the local government, being set to replace one of the three aging civic leaders. She called for aid from our oragnisation (but without saying much) and then apparently jumped, just as we were coming into the city. One of the other civic leader's people got a note which lured him out of the city, where he was killed by what we are fairly certain was a werewolf. So we're fairly sure that there is Something Going On - it' fairly clear she and this other chap were bumped off to keep them quiet - but so far we can't figure out what or why, other than the fact there's werewolves involved!

(I'm glad actually, it means as we can finish this at our Christmas session the advanture I'm writing can be pushed to our summer session, which is good because I'm losing another couple of Mondays (my quest-writing day), so I was getting a bit concerned about finishing it!)

Also, we punched a royal werewolf (i.e. akin to a greater werewolf) conscious. Well, I punched and the PsyRogue Sapped and everybody else just wholloped, but the effect is similar...!

Then we watched Funny Internet Videos (I showed the a couple of reviews of Ride to Hell Retribution among others) for a bit.

(Mine, the entirely crazy and enritely neutral Necromancer/Pale Master Invagrion - now a Lich - is very definitely still about, though the fates of the rest are deliberately left open).

I disagree. I don't read fics, but I've noticed that rainbow Dash seems to be the favorite from a high percentage of people.

She's probably in the overall top 3 of Best Pony if you quiz the fandom about it, but there are a number of people who openly despise her and hate her guts like the plague. It's hard to tell how many, but my impression is that there are more than just a few, and that a lot of them feel that way because they apparently haven't paid attention since Dragonshy.

You also see quite a bit of hate levied at Luna, despite or in fact because of her massive fan following. In Luna's case it very much appears to be a reaction to other people liking her and how she always wins every poll on EqD. Some people don't like that others like her so much, or they think that everyone who likes her is just pretending or only like her because of the fan depictions.

I can imagine it's partly the same for Dash. She's popular, but a lot of people maybe can't accept that.

Well, to be fair most "Evil" versions of the mane 6 are just terrible and tend to have nothing to do with the pony beyond sharing a name and a few biographical details.

So it's no surprise that a version I suggest wouldn't really mesh with Cupcakes or Rainbow Factory style alter-egos. You know?
I mean, if that's the aim, then it's much easier to work with in a sense. I just don't see the point. Applejack as Leatherface is just Leatherface in the general shape of an adorable pony.

And that as a darkfic concept is still far too organic to Applejack as a character to really match the oc's in mane 6 clothing that are Rainbow Factory Dash and Cupcakes Pinky.

I can't comment on Rainbow Factory... but most of the Pinkamena type Pinkie stuff I do feel has some natural extensions. Not a lot mind you but I can see say Pinkie or Twilight going off the deep end.

Not much to do with the show but not *quite* an OC playing dress up.

Obviously it wouldn't happen for any of them.

The fic kind of doesn't. Ironically, the general pop culture version of Pinkemena comes much closer to doing this than the fic in question. In art and references, it's often all because of Pinky's neuroses and insecurities and stuff. In the fic, it's just something she arbitrarily does for no raisin and which despite her having done it to like, half of ponyville, has not been discovered.

Rainbow Factory is even more out of character, even in the context of grimdark. Great tune, though.

Uh. Think I'm probably overdue to turn in. I had a big old rant half written, but I'm thinking better of it. I'll leave what I'd already put into words below, box it up and leave it at that.

Durkon was flat. He was a character in a holding pattern, with little depth and a single joke. (Oh no, a tree!) This is entirely because the idea was that he'd get fanged up eventually, so he really doesn't even start being a character until now.

AJ is only similar in the narrowest of ways and under the most shallow of examinations.

Frankly, the AJ = Background pony thing I find not so much unfunny as I do depressing, because it suggests that people are incapable of appreciating a pony who isn't wacky or a complete mess. (That may actually not be the case, but it's certainly what that over-tired running joke implies, to my mind). And the counter-argument that she should be fixed by turning her into some kind of passive aggressive snarky jerkass leaves me cold as well.

So, ignore that. Have this instead;

Yeah. Before, his story was done. He sort of had a good run, enjoyed himself, and retired to an easy life of watching humans be silly and run around and so what he did a century ago. The vampirism is an oddly dynamic shift; not because of any actual dynamism – D&D undead are notoriously static – but because of the potential for gossip, revelation and exposition.

Apple Jack does feel that way, too. I am mostly with Tiki Snakes. AJ isn't exactly the kind of pony you want to watch or hear about, but she is the kind of pony you'd want as a friend. I think that's good enough.

If you are going to subvert and darken AJ, you'd be better off taking the Apple Family Mafia route. Family above all else, including morality and law. Not slashed instability or deranged mania, just the quiet certainty that there is nothin' she would not do for the Apples.

While I admit your idea has potential, allow me to offer three counterpoints:

1: It's been done before. Mafia Applejack may not be quite as ubiquitous as the other psycho Mane Six, but it's been done. Knight Templar is somewhat more unexplored territory.

2: Since when do the psychopathic versions need to resemble their canon counterparts? Cupcakes Pinkie is horribly OOC (except maybe the bad jokes), Rainbow Dash is a mad scientist crossed with the Hulk in Rainbow Factory, Little Miss Rarity has no grounding in canon, Fluttershy in Pattycakes couldn't touch her canon counterpart with a thirty-nine-and-a-half foot pole, and while not part of the Mane Six, Cheerilee in Cheerilee's Garden is so far from her stern but kind portrayal in the show it's not even funny. Researcher Twilight comes the closest, but she still does things that canon Twilight wouldn't even conceive of, let alone do.

3: Even if we accept that you need resemblance, an Applejack who breaks wings and horns is simply a more extreme version of the "no cheating" Applejack in Fall Weather Friends. She proved there that she's a) obsessed enough with fairness to make Rainbow tie her wings up and b) willing to do things she normally wouldn't to even the scores if necessary. All I'd have to do is flanderize that to psychopathic levels.

Uh. Think I'm probably overdue to turn in. I had a big old rant half written, but I'm thinking better of it. I'll leave what I'd already put into words below, box it up and leave it at that.

Durkon was flat. He was a character in a holding pattern, with little depth and a single joke. (Oh no, a tree!) This is entirely because the idea was that he'd get fanged up eventually, so he really doesn't even start being a character until now.

AJ is only similar in the narrowest of ways and under the most shallow of examinations.

Frankly, the AJ = Background pony thing I find not so much unfunny as I do depressing, because it suggests that people are incapable of appreciating a pony who isn't wacky or a complete mess. (That may actually not be the case, but it's certainly what that over-tired running joke implies, to my mind). And the counter-argument that she should be fixed by turning her into some kind of passive aggressive snarky jerkass leaves me cold as well.

So, ignore that. Have this instead;

I like Applejack. She doesn't get the spotlight that frequently, but she does a good job of pointing out her traits when she does. Plus, I sometimes wonder about how people talk about AJ sometimes. When AJ does something and messes up, she gets called flat or terrible or dishonest or a bad background pony. When everyone else does the same, then are said to have depth and character growth.

I can't comment on Rainbow Factory... but most of the Pinkamena type Pinkie stuff I do feel has some natural extensions. Not a lot mind you but I can see say Pinkie or Twilight going off the deep end.

Not much to do with the show but not *quite* an OC playing dress up.

Obviously it wouldn't happen for any of them.
I don't see any connection to the psycho-Pinkamena from most fics and the Pinkie Pie from the show. Even when sad or serious, Pinkie isn't anything like that. I've actually seen far more similarity between psycho-Twilight and regular Twilight than psycho-Pinkamena and, well, anyone.

IT'S TIME FOR THE HEROIC AND SURGICAL ADVENTURRRRRESSSS OF COMET KICKEERRRRRRR!!!

So game starts and we start cuttin' into Rock Solid. Turns out the Hatecrystal inserted into his heart by the Priestess is turning his body into evil crystals and spreading rapidly throughout his body. Oh no! But we soldier on our way to the Vault where Rock's father, the raider warlord Solid Steel, lives. We arrive in full armour and regalia, surrounded by storms and lightning. Solid Steel's ponies let us through - with one condition.

"The machine stays here," said the guard, indicating the Technodrome.

We all exchanged significant glances.

"That's fair," we all agreed.

So then, proceeding into the depths of the Stable, we arrived in front of Solid Steel. Solid Steel asked to speak to his son in private, so Poppyfields, Fasanoma and Comet had to stand around in the corridor outside. Which is when Comet Kicker sprung the question.

"Hey Fasanoma, when we break into the Luna's Horn military base and take over the wastelands what do you intend to do about it?"

"Blow up the crystals seems like a good start."

"And then what?"

"I hadn't really thought about it. Save the wastes, fight the bad, stop the fighting and all that good stuff."

"So establish a government."

"Well... no, not as such."

"If you want to consistently enforce your will upon others you need to form a government."

"I was more thinking just... killing those doing the wrong."

"Really? And who's that? The Steel Rangers? Do we apply our superweapon against the army of Steel Rangers outside the base? Then what do we do with the rest back at their base? Hope they forget about it? Let them keep enslaving ponies and forcing them to mine out tech?"

"I don't know, I hadn't thought that far ahead."

"I have. Which is why I want you to support me as Princess."

Surprise. Comet Kicker has just revealed her secret ambition: Declare herself pretty Pony Princess of the Canterbury region, backed up by an arcane technomagic doomfortress.

"You want to be princess? You?"

"Yes. Somepony has to do it, and if I have that base I'll be in the best position to do so."

"Ahah... Poppyfields, what do you think of this crazy plan."

Poppyfields: "I have no objections to it."

Fasanoma: "What!?"

Poppyfields: "Comet Kicker asked me earlier. It actually sounds like a pretty reasonable plan. Plus if she turns evil we can just kill her."

Comet: "It's true! If there's one thing we all have the power to do, it's kill each other!"

Fasanoma: "I - but -"

Poppyfields: "Let me put it this way: Is there anypony in the entire wastes who you'd prefer to have as princess to Comet Kicker?"

Fasanoma: "... no, not really."

Poppyfields: "I guess there's you?"

Fasanoma: "NO!"

Comet Kicker: "It's settled then!"

At about this point, we see Solid Steel pull out a Super Sledge and smash Rock Solid in the face through the Atrium window.

Poppyfields reacts first. She fires a missile at the window, blasting a massive crater through the wall. Rock Solid picks himself up, dives out the window, and bodyslams Comet Kicker. Comet Kicker makes a squeaky sound as she's crushed by her earth pony buddy.

"Stop fighting him!" said Rock. "He was trying to knock me out!"

Poppyfields: "Why? What?"

"I'm possessed. I can't control myself," said Rock. "The Priestess sent me to assassinate Solid Steel."

"Oh, so that's why you tackled me!" said Comet brightly.

"... no, I wanted to do that."

"Look," said Fasanoma, in her long-suffering doctor voice. "If you need to be knocked out we can do it painlessly with magic instead of bashing your skull in with a blunt object." To demonstrate, she immediately put Rock Solid under with an anesthetic spell.

Still on top of Comet Kicker. Poor Comet tried to struggle for escape.

Later, in the Stable medical bay, we're looking at the crystal growth inside Rock under advanced medical conditions. We're trying whatever we can think of to reduce the growth. Comet Kicker suggested that we "Try reversing it with the magic of friendship!"

Fasanoma decided this was a great idea and used Alter Physiology to send us on massive endorphin rushes that made us all ridiculously calm and happy and friendly. Comet Kicker immediately set about brushing Poppyfields' mane. Didn't seem to inflict more than minor damage on the crystal. "One day," said Comet Kicker, "I hope we'll be able to tap into the magic of friendship without brain-altering chemistry."

So, as the logical followup to failed friendship, we immediately turned to blackest necromancy. Solid Steel brought out a little blue-white stone which he said was notorious for "sucking souls". We stuck it in Rock's chest and immediately the crystal shrank back so it only covered his heart. Success! However, as tempting as the idea of stacking arcane horrors in Rock's chest cavity until they all balanced out was, this called for more severe cyber surgery.

So it was that we headed back to the Doom Fortress of Alcoltraz, the Canterbury Commons penitentiary! Since speed was of the essence, Comet slammed together a cloud chariot. We left the Technodrome behind in Raider territory with the instructions "Be good" (we are horrible ponies sometimes).

Back at the penitentiary, Poppyfields made a brand new cyber-heart for Rock, and inserted a bunch of unnecessary bonus features purely on the grounds that they were cool. Poppyfields' approach to magic isn't 'how does this work', it's 'I know that I don't understand half of the things that I'm capable of, I'm just the middleman between magic and reality'. She also armour-plated Rock's spine just for the hell of it. Fasanoma went ahead and performed the heart switch, rendering Rock a severely augmented Cyberpony.

Finally, for the hell of it, Poppyfields made some cyber wings and slammed them on Rock Solid's back. Rock Solid can now fly! Slowly! Comet had great fun teaching him how to fly.

But then it was time to be on our way again. Our plan was to head for the Ministry of Awesome base, checking on as many towns as we could along the way. If the Priestess had a habit of coercing local leadership as a bid to extend her control we wanted to check community leaders for hidden agents.

We left Rock's crystal heart in the doom tower alongside the corpsejacker tube. That seems to be our horrifying doomsday device room. We took the soulsucking necromancy orb.

The following scene must be described in full prose.

The guards stood well back as the group entered the town council chamber. They had cause to be afraid, for they had never seen ponies quite like them. The pegasus was tall and graceful in the colours of indigo, and stormclouds crackled through her mane and tail. The earth pony was immense and muscular, bright pink cybernetic eye glowing through his armour plating. The two unicorns were splattered with blood, pink and blue, horns that bore the scorch-marks of wielding the elements themselves. No town guard was going to get in their way.

Outside, the crystal spires crackled and grew, and the town was besieged by the forces of darkness. The sky was the stormy midnight that had held ever since the great spire had gone up.

The town council room was dominated by the morbidly obese figure of the Mayor. "Who the devil are you?" he barked.

"We are the saviours of the wasteland," said Rock Solid.

"My name is Comet Kicker," said Comet. "And we're here to save you all."

"Save us? We don't need saving! Our plans are working perfectly!" blustered the mayor.

"If your plan is cower behind your walls until some heroes show up to bail you out, well - congratulations! It worked!" said Comet.

"We're here to check for sleeper agents in your community," said Poppyfields.

"So, could you tell us how your supplies are doing? Food and water and medicine and stuff?" asked Fasanoma.

"Why do we need to know that?" asked Comet, confused.

"Why? So you can SABOTAGE them?" roared the Mayor.

"Look, we don't need to know that stuff. We just need to check you for crystal subversion and then we'll destroy the spires and be on our way," said Comet.

"I refuse! What an utter invasion of privacy!" the Mayor blustered.

Rock Solid punched him out.

"Any other objections?" asked Rock. "Okay, I guess we're doing this."

"So, go ahead, Fasanoma! Work your magic! Find out if he's evil!"

"How am I meant to do that?!"

"I dunno, use your unicorn magic or something."

"I don't know any spells for that!"

"Then how did you check Rock?"

"I cut him open and looked around inside!"

Comet Kicker looked at her expectantly.

"I - argh fine!" Fasanoma said. She lifted the fat pony onto the table, sighed, and pulled out her scalpel. After a few deep breaths she started performing exploratory surgery right there on the council's meeting desk.

"Well, he's not infected by crystals, but there's a lot of fat in his arteries. He'll probably risk a stroke if he doesn't have a doctor look at cleaning this out soon," observed Fasanoma.

"Do it now!" said Comet.

"What?"

"He'll need surgery at some pony? Do it now! Let's not have cut him open for no reason!" said Comet.

"I - that's not - fine okay," Fasnoma relented, and proceeded to perform unnecessary open heart surgery. "Fine. Done. Can we go?"

"Sure!" said Comet. Fasanoma closed up the Mayor, cast clean to make all the blood disappear, and we walked for the door.

Poppyfields left on the note of "If anypony else comes in and tries to do what we just did, they're probably crystal spies and you shouldn't trust them."

And then we left through the front gate, leaving possibly the most shell-shocked town council meeting of all time in our wake.

The next morning all the crystal spires were blown to pieces, and future Princess Comet Kicker was well on her way south.

She's probably in the overall top 3 of Best Pony if you quiz the fandom about it, but there are a number of people who openly despise her and hate her guts like the plague. It's hard to tell how many, but my impression is that there are more than just a few, and that a lot of them feel that way because they apparently haven't paid attention since Dragonshy.

You also see quite a bit of hate levied at Luna, despite or in fact because of her massive fan following. In Luna's case it very much appears to be a reaction to other people liking her and how she always wins every poll on EqD. Some people don't like that others like her so much, or they think that everyone who likes her is just pretending or only like her because of the fan depictions.

I don't get the love for Luna. For the same reason I don't get massive followings of background characters. It's all fan-made personality, and I can't see why people treat it...I don't know, almost as canon.

On Dash, Dragonshy was her low point, but she hasn't changed much. She's still reckless and brash, and Wonderbolt Academy is the only place where you really see her improving. Maybe we'll get to see more in season 4, but for now, she's down on my list.

Early in the fandom when there were like eight episodes, everyone was wondering 'When the hell is Princess Luna coming back? And when she does, what's she going to be like after a thousand years imprisoned on the moon, possessed by a demon?'

People started putting forwards theories. Theories started snowballing.

For the same reason I don't get massive followings of background characters.

Because great things are built on small things. A meme becomes a comic becomes a fanart becomes a beautiful full-length fanfiction. This is how culture happens.

It's all fan-made personality, and I can't see why people treat it...I don't know, almost as canon.

Do you think Sherlock Holmes would have been written if detective novels weren't popular at the time? Or Shakespeare have written his plays if plays were not in vogue in the streets of London?

Establish precedent, and a cast of colourful characters and historical figures, to help people navigate new and unfamiliar media. It's all incredibly basic storytelling technique to use and evolve familiar figures.

On Dash, Dragonshy was her low point, but she hasn't changed much. She's still reckless and brash, and Wonderbolt Academy is the only place where you really see her improving. Maybe we'll get to see more in season 4, but for now, she's down on my list.

I don't get the dislike for Applejack either. I like Applejack.

How much? Well, up until I saw Applejack, I hated the type of Southern accent that they used for her because every single character I have seen on TV or film with that type of accent has been the type of character I want to throw a building site's worth of bricks at. With a trebuchet.

And then along came Applejack. And suddenly, a character that I actually liked, and one where the accent fitted her like a glove. And the reaction cascaded down to her family.

And as far as the "main character" issue is concerned: Having the spotlight does not a main character make. She is regularly interacting with the rest of the mane cast and she plays a significant part in many of the stories. Claiming that she is not a main character is a little like claming that the person at work who just gets on with the job and doesn't flaunt themselves in front of the management isn't an important part of the team.

Marching Band is over. We had an amazing, kick A, turned it up to 11, full on intensity performance at the state finals...

And got 6th place.

Ah well, there is always next year, and really the scores are more of an opinion than anything.

My thoughts on Applejack. She is clearly the most emotionally and mentally stable of all the ponies. We really have seen her have only two major flaws, unwilling to accept help and not willing to accept her failure, and those flaws were resolved in the episode they appeared in. What's more, she has a number of positive traits going for her. Namely tat she cares for her family and is very hard working. In fact, I look up to Applejack because she conquered her flaws and is an otherwise extremely rational and happy pony.

Oh, we're terrible by any normal standard. The only point in our defense is that the number of NPCs in this setting that aren't even more terrible can be counted on a pony's hooves, and all of those guys are ineffective civilians. We have virtually nopony we can trust not to screw everything up. Given the circumstances we're not doing that badly!

We've basically hit the level of power where we can demolish armies and major population centres, which makes us unaccountable badasses even before we get inside the doom fortress. Dr. Fasanoma can heal several hundred HP in a single turn and raise the dead, Poppyfields is capable of layering enough buffs to suffocate a Cleric, Rock Solid is a sentient piece of industrial mining equipment, and Comet Kicker is a Category Five tropical cyclone that ran over a grenade factory. When we work together we're basically the most well optimised party the system can handle. The 'mooks' we go up against have something like 2-3 times the HP they're supposed to just to give us a challenge, and it's frequently implied we're blasting through dozens of lesser encounters without working up a sweat.

With all this power going to our heads it's probably no surprise that we're okay with performing surprise nonconsentual public open heart surgery on regional authority figures.

Early in the fandom when there were like eight episodes, everyone was wondering 'When the hell is Princess Luna coming back? And when she does, what's she going to be like after a thousand years imprisoned on the moon, possessed by a demon?'

People started putting forwards theories. Theories started snowballing.

Because great things are built on small things. A meme becomes a comic becomes a fanart becomes a beautiful full-length fanfiction. This is how culture happens.
If you know a tiny fraction of a character, they'll become more popular than if you know everything. The fraction is a hook to get people invested.
Then they can fill in the gaps. People fill in the gaps with their own headcanon, and, because the resulting fanon is mostly their work, they are FAR more invested than they could be for someone else's character.

Incidentally. Applejack is a known quantity. There are few to no unknown things about her. You put her in a situation, you know how she'll react.

It might be that I just don't identify with Applejack. I don't have things in common with her, and she doesn't have traits I idealise. I share things with twilight, I wish I was more like Pinkie or Rarity, and Rainbow is the kind of person who I may not really idealise, but might daydream about being.

But yes. Most of my dislike towards Applejack is because of things that aren't her fault. Mostly, it's because characters deeper in her corner of the archetype map are absolutely abhorrent to me, and while she's alright, she makes me think of them.

Phew. So this weekend I've been playing Zelda 3 with the Derpy mod (Legend of Derpy?) on a quest to beat the game with zero deaths. I've honestly NEVER finished this game before so this is kinda of a... what's the word? Right, crazy waste of time. Personal Challenge. :smalltongue:

On Dash, Dragonshy was her low point, but she hasn't changed much. She's still reckless and brash, and Wonderbolt Academy is the only place where you really see her improving. Maybe we'll get to see more in season 4, but for now, she's down on my list.

If you look at her role in Hurricane Fluttershy, and her joust with Fluttershy in the Crystal Empire, you get a look not only at how she's improved but also how Dragonshy affected her. Dash has learned a lot, but it hasn't changed her personality, and it shouldn't, because her personality is great. She just needed a few lessons to channel it correctly.

Rainbow Dash wants others to be the best they can be, just like she wants herself to be. She pushes them to achieve their best and to overcome their weaknesses, like she pushes herself. In Dragonshy she was faced with a pony who gave the impression of being completely hopeless, who broke down under the least bit of pressure instead of even trying. Rainbow Dash didn't know how to handle that, and subsequently failed horribly.

At the end she learned how strong Fluttershy really could be if encouraged correctly, which confirmed her view that with the right pushing, anypony can overcome their weaknesses and get better. She just wasn't pushing right with Fluttershy.

Later, in Hurricane Fluttershy and the Crystal Empire, we see her trying to encourage and push Fluttershy to do better. She starts by pushing, but only until Fluttershy starts to break, after which she immediately switches to comfort her. She is quickly learning just how hard she can push Fluttershy before she breaks, and she keeps pushing only hard enough to encourage her and to move that barrier a little further every time.

Rainbow Dash is learning and becoming a better pony throughout the series. She shows great concern for her friends and want to push them to success.

There's something in there true of the fan-atic segment I guess. Which almost by definition though is only going to be a fraction of the general participation in anything seeing more then minor success.

I frankly rather doubt the "ability to make up your own" details is actually a general asset for a character. Most people do not actually watch something and go "ooh ooh what if..." and those that do show a strong tendency towards disappointment when their speculations do not occur in reality.

I'm not even sure it holds up in the fan segments. Twilight has popped up numerous times in polls as the Herd favorite. I think this has little to do with feeling we don't know the pony with the most screen time... and more to do with her being a modestly anti-social nerd type and you're asking a bunch of nerds who their favorite pony is. Or just for being the mane character of the mane six, protags generally score high in popularity.

I rather tend think we have a good idea baseline on that with everypony. Otherwise you could never say if something seemed "in character" or not for them.

However AJ you would generally expect to act sanely, practically and without that much showing off. And nobody wants their entertainment to go "Problem was X, problem was solved sensibly and realistically and everybody acted like reasonable adults" all that because if we wanted reality we wouldn't be seeking fiction.

Of course not every character should or even can be the center of attention. A cast of unique and super special snowflakes looses impact quickly. Having a range of types though creates contrasts that balance, and improve the show as whole.

Entertainment would be a far poorer realm without the AJ out there doing their quite and probably unappreciated jobs.

Not into maybe liking AJ... but in tolerating the character type without needing language like "abhorrent" for something you've admitted here is pretty far into personal preference. If AJ was the only thing on the menu maybe, but that not the case... honestly this sound to me precisely like wanting all entertainment to revolve around your specific and superior tastes.

Which since I very clearly do not share... well yeah that's a problem.

If there's one thing our resident military undead hates more strongly than certain types of annoying characters/villains of a certain type, it's villains reforming.

So, uh, I doubt very much a reformed Gilda would be let off the hook. Least, far as I follow and understand the situation. :smallsmile:

Why the love for Luna (based on show material only, not fan media)? Seems pretty simple:

1. Just enough tease of a character arc to establish headcanons.
2. Said headcanon usually is corralled by the show's teasers into involving a fairly shonen character arc, and especially unique in context of MLP... involving angst from previous feelings of neglect/underappreciation, from subsequent fall from grace... and then subsequent journey to find oneself and quest for redemption in an unfamiliar environment.
3. Character design fits this very well for the target demographic, i.e. a special snowflake who resembles a mid-late teenager in design, rather than chibi (most normal ponies) or adult/maternal (Celestia).
4. Alter ego is (in-universe) badass; overflows into normal self. Hence, a badass special snowflake who feels underappreciated... yeah. :smallwink:
5. Subsequent episodes establish her as physically badass (not just narratively), but still vulnerable to peer pressure and socially awkward.

On a different note... you're practicing guilt by association against an entire spectrum of characters. And that's even granting there IS a guilty party which is pretty hard if were talking anything archetype level in my book.

You know I never really liked that term, Drony, for a dragon/pony hybrid. I know it's a combo and sounds better than Dragony (which just sounds like a descriptor) but it seems lazy, and too much like a Drone.

I've always preferred Kirin, equine dragon things, very mystical sounding.(Especially since Draconeques refers to something very different).

I've also had similar problems with Zonies (Zebra ponies) but I don't know about a better alternative. Hipogrifs are fine though, and I wish we saw more of them in fanart. (rather than just a bunch of griffons with rainbow hair whenever anyone's shipping Gilda and Rainbow.)

Well, that's the wonderful--and horrifying--side of this fandom. There's something for everyone. "Griffon the Brush Off" has some overtones that Dash and Gilda were together. You've even admitted that in the past.

Breaking up is only one interpretation of the events, anyway. An argument is just as possible, as is a later reconciliation. Clearly, things aren't nearly as clear-cut as you think. :smalltongue:

That's what I'm talking about. I don't care if you want to ignore "Griffon the Brush Off". I don't care if you want to ship Rainbow and Gilda and have them have a lesbian baby. I don't even really care if it has hair on its feathers (though it does bug me a little bit).

There's something in there true of the fan-atic segment I guess. Which almost by definition though is only going to be a fraction of the general participation in anything seeing more then minor success.

I started posting about Pony without an introduction and in turn no one posted a welcome. I simply jumped into the conversation and was accepted like one of the gang. Then, on page 14 of thread 39, I had written a contrary response to a question Forum Explorer asked about what we consider a bad twist in fanfics:

So I really can't win. Today, I discovered, through the naruto thread, that after TWELVE YEARS OF USE Virgin media decided my Fanfiction.net alerts were spam a month or so ago, so I haven't been getting any of the updates.

Which of course requires arsing about getting in Virgin Media email accoutn and not my Outlook Express one, unspamming the ones in my Spam folder, and going back through the unsortable mess and finding every alert prior that I wasn't sure about, and then cross checking them with the "update date" on my Fanfic alerts... Fortunately, I don't think I've missed much and I can catch up, but by FRAG it's just one more thing I could have done without having to do.

(And of course it took so long to spot since it's been so chaotic and the last months have blended together and sometimes my fanfic alerts sit for a week or few until I get to them, hense not noticing.)

That's actually really common. Emails and stuff are changing their standards all the time using an evolving and, often, bass-ackwards and multi-managerial understanding of what they want to achieve (ie no idea what they're doing, how or why) and stuff gets shifted around a lot.

TWELVE YEARS, bearing in mind fanfic is my primary reading source and work on the basis that I don't ever delete them, since it's as good a way for me to find them again (or the authors) if I want to re-read anything.

I wouldn't even hazard a guess.

JUST the ones that are updating currently (or have updated in the last couple of months) ran to nearly twenty. (And that's only the ones on FanFiction, not FimFiction as well...)

If, Hypothetically, I were to homebrew Ponies as a playable race in Dungeons: The Dragoning (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/TabletopGame/DungeonsTheDragoning), would it make more sense to stat the three tribes as separate races, or have them the same race, with a variable racial feature to determine the tribe of the pony?

Bat ponies and Crystal Ponies, regardless of the choice made, will be incorporated as Creation only racial feats for Pegasi and Earth Ponies

I enjoyed it as much as the others.

And the climax has the best pure Nanoha moment of awesome ever. (Soras knows what I mean, don't you?)

Also, the music was superlative.

Speaking of Nanoha and thinking of fanfic (hooray, I got a notification through on Outlook which means the spam filter was smart enough to unspam fanfic!) I STRONGLY recommend Mozco's Infinity (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/5144486/1/Infinity) (or indeed anything other Nanoha story he's done) as being extremely good (if, towards the end, somewhat power-creep-y) and above all stupendously funny.

It's probably my favorite. It completes the transformation from Magical Girl show to Police Procedural (with magitech and explosions). We have new protagonists while still giving Nanoha, Fate, and Hayate plenty of time. Seeing grown up Nanoha and Fate is awesome.

Twilight A's updated. Plot wise I think this is actually even better than the Nanoha A's finale because it has really managed to include everyone and give them something to do. The scale here is more on the level of the StrikerS finale, with a huge ass battle against a ship sized monster over the moon.

I'm sorry.... but Nanoha A's finale almost literally can not give more people anything to do since it would involve empowering the Nanoha's two normal friends.

And no fic will have Brave Phoenix. Your argument is invalid.

I enjoyed it as much as the others.

Mind you, I have so many DVDs and movies that I haven't watched...

(Also, why in the heck has StrikerS not come out on DVD yet! And. on checking, the frack the DVDs are expensive now, I'm glad I bought them when I did...)

But basically, it's just fracking awesome.

So, yeah, in the regard that like pony or avatar, it's a very well done series (albiet with slightly more explosions and starships) is a reason.

Also, don't read any of the aforementioned stories (especially Infinity) until you've watched at least season 2, mostly because A's introduces a frack-ton of new characters.

So, I'm working a seasonal position at Toys 'R' Us. A mother who was obviously shopping for a younger daughter asked me to direct her to some My Little Pony merchandise that were supposed to be on sale. When we got to the aisle, we found that she shelves were empty. So I called up the back on my walkie-talkie and they brought out some. As my co-worker got there, he started pulling out the different ones to show the mother. The interesting thing was, my co-worker referred to each pony as "white", "pink", "orange", "blue" pony. The mother referred to them as "white", "pink", "orange", "blue" pony. And then there was me in the middle calling them Rarity, Pinkie Pie, Sunset Shimmer, and Rainbow Dash. I was greatly amused at the situation.:smallbiggrin:

I have now watched Spike at Your Service.

Spike seemed to have a lost a lot of basic assisting competency in this episode. Kinda lame, kinda lame.

The show is very cute, though. Voice acting and animation, top notch.

Timber King (he had a little crown!) perished to the might of the pebble. A cautionary tale if there ever was one. I liked how when he was coughing he extended an arm and a finger, as if to say "hold on one moment, I have something in my throat". It was a nice touch.

It felt like Spike had become a bit of a clown during the episode, but besides that, I found the episode enjoyable enough.

I ascribe it to CMC Symdrome. That is, that Spike was getting so caught up in the Trying To Be Helpful that he wsn't actually paying attention to the job at hand - in the same way the CMC are always doing things to earn their cutie marks and thus not for th task itself. They're so focussed on the end goal (cutie mark and Being Helpful) that they're not looking at the means. They're focussing on the destination, not the journey - or the reason for the journey, if you see what I mean.

Well, the first Nanoha had two major characters (three if you count Fate's "mother") and two relatively minor characters. Nanoha A's introduced 5 more characters, all major.

StrikerS introduces four new major protagonists, one "main" antagonist and another twelve antagonists as well - although you'll probably only remember two of three of those. And one other important character halfway through.

So yeah, lots of new characters.

As an aside, StrikerS is quite different from the original/A's. The first two were very much magical girl shows with some mecha aspects in them. StrikerS follows a similar formula, but exchanges the magical girl aspects for a bit of a school/academy aspect.

I also felt like it dropped plot points too frequently to be consistent, but I'll let you decide if that's the case.

So, I'm working a seasonal position at Toys 'R' Us. As a side note, I did find some interesting little comic "fun packs" (http://comicscrux.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/comics-crux-my-little-pony-micro-fun-pack.jpg) at Toys 'R' Us. They contain the Micro-Series for four of the ponies (Twilight, Applejack, Rainbow, and Pinkie) and a few stickers/mini poster. Pony Tales is a better deal, for $20 for all six in full size, rather than $4 each and half the size.

Still, nice to see they're getting the comics out to people other than comic book loyalists, at least.

And frankly there's no comparison qualitatively either in my book. Jokes about the few males aside, Nanoha does a much better job of not actually forgetting about people and giving them character arcs.

They actually do a good job with the characters, though. I didn't care much for Nanoha overall, but A's does very well introducing the new antagonists and highlighting their reasons for fighting. StrikerS does a very good job in introducing the four new protagonists, and actually spends most of the first third or so of the series doing so.

In fact, I was kind of disappointed with how much the dropped stuff in StrikerS and how much Nanoha/Fate/[spoilery character] took over things at the end instead.

Far better than Bleach in my opinion, although I don't have much of a high opinion for Bleach. So take that as you will.

Yeah, I think that was my one major gripe with that episode. It could have worked better if instead Spike simply organized things differently than AJ did. For example, AJ couldn't find the baking tins for making pies because Spike sorted everything by color and size in separate drawers because that's the OCD kind of thing Twilight did.

Indeed. My daughter was upset that she might not wake up at 6:30 Saturday morning to catch the opening of the mini-mareathon. I was like "Okay, I love pony too, but we have all those episodes on DVD. I'm sleeping in till 8am." :smalltongue:

Not D&d. Dungeons:the Dragoning:40000:7th edition.

It's a combination of D&d 3.5 an 4th edition, Exalted, Scion, Both WOD, Dark Herasy, fluff and Races from Base WH40K, and it include elements from Planescape and Spelljammer.

and the best part is, everything is almost completely balanced.

And I'm making Pones for it.

And the comparison is factually wrong and can only lead you to false conclusions. Seriously style wise these shows would I think need conscious effort to be farther apart.

Its about like saying "well bananas must taste just like apples because they're both fruit"... no, just no.

Bleach is 600 chapters more/less in one big damn story.

MGLN is three series totaling 52 episodes, and some spin-off mangas.

More importantly each season (MGLN, A's, and StrikerS) represent complete storylines in and of themselves. They're seriously nothing at all like the arcs of the big shonen series because there is no big plot arc.

The show introduces new characters sure... but it actually completes characters' stories too.
