Can anything special come out of planar ranger?

CAn anything really nice or special come out of a planar ranger build, seems the animal suffers , as its type and abilities change enough, to not qualify for other classes progression.

Really, the only noticeable change is the net loss of one Knowledge as a class skill; everything else is pretty much a wash, and not even an interesting one.

Seems like a concept that'd take well to a homebrew fix; there's a number of takes on the Ranger out there, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's been done already.
