Showdown in the Playground!
On Pokemon Showdown (http://play.pokemonshowdown.com/), we can play (kind of) competitively without having to go through with all the bother of breeding for the perfect IVs, Natures, and movesets. Not to mention EV training, what a hassle! :smalltongue:

Also, there's no need for any downloads. The only thing you need to do is sign up and make a team, then you're ready!

So I'm considering trying to run a tournament. Pokemon Showdown has already provided us with a handy-dandy format list, ranging from Smogon tiers from the past generations, to a beta system for Gen VI. It's all mostly up in the air! So let's figure something out. How shall we do it? We can do multiple ones for different formats, if some people fancy double battles and so on. So far, I believe the majority favors Gen6, pre-Pokebank, but if you don't speak up I can't hear you, eh? :smalltongue:

Bear in mind, it's still a beta, so things might not be perfect yet. Moves and abilities might not work exactly as they might in-game, but I haven't seen anything particularly egregious yet.

I'd be up for 6th gen pre-Pokébank or 6th gen only. I used to be decent at Smogon Doubled in 5th gen, so I'd be up for doubles or singles. My name is noparlpf over there too, if they still have me. I haven't played since before they updated the servers several months back, I think.

Pre-Bank 6th, and if there's a Triples I'd like that. Singles if not.

I'm qwertystop there too.

Any idea when they'll have triples and rotation battles coded? I like rotation.

Happy Gravity

I dunno, it's not exactly the most competitive of formats. It's probably an afterthought. :/

Edit - Also, if you could chime in with what days/time you have available, that would be helpful with scheduling later, possibly!

I'm on there as well, name is the same as on here. I'm free just about always, and I'm happy to play in any generation, but i really prefer single battles.. Also i don't own gen 6 so i have no idea what pre pokebank means?

I'm Derjuin on Showdown as well. I'd be up for regular Singles OU or pokebank LC, if anyone's down for those.

Generally I'm available nightly, except on thursdays and fridays.

ScionoftheVoid

ScionoftheVoid, same as here. Available pretty much any day except Monday, Tuesday or this Wednesday. Sundays aren't great but are manageable.

Pre-pokebank sounds good. Preference to singles but I could probably do equally well badly in doubles.

Considered trying a trick room team.. How would Goodra be as a special wall?
Is it slow enough to be useful on such a team?

With minimal speed IVs and a hindering nature it could be fine. And even as a special wall, acting second against a slow heavy-hitter is not that much of a problem because of its bulk.

Hmm, if the consensus is to do gen 6 i might need some help with a team, i don't have the games yet so i know almost nothing about the new stuff in it. I would go to smogon but they are still setting everything up from what i understand.

Pre-Bank Gen 6 Singles is cool for me. Not really a fan of the idea of Gen 6 only- there's only like 32 fully evolved pokemon added this gen, 35 if you include the legendaries (another 26 if you include mega-evolutions, and a few more if you include +Fairy changes). Which... looking at it a second time isn't all that bad. But I like some of my oldies that didn't get all the nice updates :smalltongue:

As for the Goodra question, 80 base speed isn't amazing but it's nothing to snark at either. If you really want to use it in Trick Room you can run a speed hindering nature/IV, and possibly run a mixed set given its decent but-not-too-far-apart 100/115 attacking stats. As Shades of Gray point out, the thing is beyond bulky, so it should be fine going second.

Okay, I think I got this working. The application itself doesn't run on MacOS 10.6, so I'm just going to use the browser-based thingy and I've at least tossed together a team that should get ridiculously pummeled. I've registered under Oracle of Wuffing, and my schedule is, um... Yeah. Put me down for "Um... Yeah." :smalltongue:

If you want help, PM me or something. Note that some Pokemon got fewer changes than others, so Smogon should still help you out even with GenV builds for something like, say, Conkeldurr or Rotom-W.

Smogon actually does have info available, you just need to peruse its forums (especially Uncharted and Analyses) for it. Conkeldurr is actually very different atm, missing many crucial tutor moves from BW2 as well as facing a meta-game which resists fighting more and throws out moves advantageous against fighting more often.

Thinking about participating, but I've developed an emotional attachment to my team in-game after so much effort putting it together.

You can join me in probably trying to use the stats and movesets of my in-game team even if they're not all OU. At least we spent the time to breed up five-31 Pokémon, right?

One thing that's irking me is that we currently can't store replays due to heavy load (or something). We can still copy-paste the text but it's a bit inconvenient.

So I have yet to make an account for it but if Legion is open I'll go for that. Chose the name ArceanLegion. Anyway I would be up for X/Y Singles if thats an option (does it have megas cuz I'm fine with that too), but I'd say ban legendaries.

Yea i know, my problem is that i have a deep love of the fighting type, and a lot of my teams seem to wind up with two or so on them. Heck when we tried to start a GITP league i was the fighting gym leader. So now i have to start changing my schtick.

It was a shame that never really took off past the gym/elite placements. Luckily my poison types just got better this gen. Mmm Speed Boost Scoli. And Nidoking got a physical buff, I guess.

I'm up for the tourney too, by the way. Same name as here. Usually free every afternoon, moreso next week.

Alright! Here’s the situation. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jiBeQctWa8)

We have a very precarious situation here, and I have a lot more to lose. A +6 Aegislash is nothing to scoff at. However, it’s not as bad as it looks. I have a chance.

He has three possible moves to use. Swords Dance has served its purpose - He’s maxed on attack, there’s no reason to use it except to stall and let us both heal from Leftovers.

Similarly, I have only three possible moves to use at this point. Roost will make me vulnerable to Sacred Sword (even more…) and won’t serve much of a purpose as I’m already healed.

Substitute, Brave Bird, and Sucker Punch vs King’s Shield, Sacred Sword, and Shadow Sneak. Our metaphorical Rock, Paper, and Scissors.

If he Shadow Sneaks to break a Substitute, he’s lowering his defenses and my Brave Bird will hit much harder. 3-4 Brave Birds will knock him out, and I’ve already managed to get a few hits in. I’ve managed to slip in attacks during his Swords Dances and his attacking turns. I will probably be able to live a Shadow Sneak, allowing me to revenge kill him with another Pokemon if I get that hit with Brave Bird. My entire team is Dark type, so most of my Pokemon resist Ghost. My bulkier Pokemon should be able to take a +6 Shadow Sneak. Shadow Sneak loses to Brave Bird and beats Substitute (and Sucker Punch, but this is a metaphor shut up).

King’s Shield will reduce my attack again if I Brave Bird. That’ll make Honchkrow completely useless here. I’d have to switch or stay and die. If he Shields on my Sub, though, I get a free hit with Brave Bird or a Roost. King’s Shield loses to Substitute, ties with Sucker Punch (nothing happens), and beats Brave Bird.

The third option is Sacred Sword. With this option, if I hit him with Brave Bird, it’ll be reduced damage because he’s still in Shield mode when I hit him. Then Sacred Sword will wreck me. He’ll also kill my Substitute if I try that, meaning that Substitute isn’t a sustainable option. Sucker Punch, however, will likely take him out in one hit. Sacred Sword loses to Sucker Punch, ties with Substitute (kind of, he gets leftovers and I lost 19% of my HP), and beats Brave Bird.

It’s not an entirely fair game of Rock Paper Scissors, but it’s an analogy anyways. I’m going for the Sucker Punch.

Pretty well played on your part. Odd that he started with Bulk Up against a Drapion though. IMO, Talonflame should restrain itself from using boosting moves unless it's clearly forcing a switch or something similar.

Name is Bugcatcher Fabio, i'm online sometimes. I have a Pokebank Ubers and a 5th gen UU team (with mostly legendaries, i actually use it against OU and Ubers, it's really fun).

Trying OU too, but i'm pretty bad at it.

I'd be happy to share my teams if anyone's interested

Man, I don't know what it is, but playing Showdown around 9-11 pm EST seems to draw out all the bad players. I'm not talking skill bad - I mean the players you don't want to battle with. The ones that complain you're taking too long, or say GG U LOOSE halfway through the match, or do nothing but try to talk trash.

I've had one battle out of maybe twelve this evening that didn't make me want to choke a trainer. :smallsigh: Earlier today (1pm-3pm EST) was chock full of silent and/or nicely spoken folk.

I take it everyone here is at least moderately interested in participating, so admissions will be OPEN for the first disorganized tournament, up until Friday! :D

Alright, if I'm looking at things correctly and if everyone who hasn't spoken up is still interested (maybe not, I know...), we have 16 people.

I'll be sending out a mass PM asking for confirmation. I'm thinking that after that's done, I'll randomize the matchups and have you guys work out when to battle your opponent by yourselves. I'd like to spectate on these too, so let me know that as well.

Edit: Togath's PM box is full. o.O If anyone else currently on the list (Read: Not ScionoftheVoid, noparlpf, or Elhann) didn't get the PM, let me know.
