If Laurin doesn't directly know Julio? T and J must have met before Tarquin started his own team! Or.... Did maybe T and J work toghether?

Julio is Tarquin's father.

Julio is Tarquin's second husband.

I don't know... maybe they were pupils to the same master in that classic "good disciple, evil disciple", but chaotic/lawful in this case.

But my personal theory includes Elan's mother, who still didn't appear directly in this story. What if Julio was involved in whatever happened to Elan's parents to divorce? Tarquin was really jealous in that time, you know (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0760.html)?

I have serious doubts that those two guys could ever tolerate working together.

As for when they met, I don't have enough info to deduce when it happened. For all I know, it might have been two years of cat-and-mouse intrigue, filled with plots and pursuits and disguises and surprises. Or possibly, it could have been a ten-minute duel in a marketplace (possibly involving the 60% chance of a hero stopping a tyrant from whipping an elderly slave (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0511.html)), and then they never saw each other again. There's fanfiction fodder in that, but there's not much else to see at the moment.

One bit we do know is that Tarquin led Laurin and the rest of the party back in the day, but they parted ways after that, up until he developed a new retirement plan (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0758.html). And then after that, they split up into three groups again, with the occasional partner swap (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0759.html).

That leaves at least three spans for Julio to have shown up: before Tarquin ever teamed up with Laurin, after the party dispersed, and after they paired off for their new jobs. Yeah, not easy to narrow down.

Still, it would've been a hoot to see that battle, no matter what age Tarquin and Julio were at the time.

Julio is Tarquin's father.

Is this going to turn into a thread like this (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=314423) one?

They met for the first time in #930.

But you'll have to wait for the precuel to see them meet for the last time.

My prediction is that Julio and his crew were hired to lead the assault on Tarquin's original empire, so Laurin and the other 4 wouldn't be there.

Julio née Juliana, used to be Elan's Mommy.

Maybe they're brothers!

But then again... why would Tarquin call him "Scoundrel" if they were brothers? Because they would have the same last name so it wouldn't make that much sense...

When Tarquin and Julio first met?
Here (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0930.html) Panel 6.

That is the first time that they meet in the comic (baring disguises).

In a more history of the world of the Order of the Stick sense.

When Tarquin and Julio first met?
In the past.

When Tarquin and Julio first met, it was a passionate romance from the first, leading to Tarquin divorcing Elan's mother to make way for his new amour, rather than simply killing her outright. However, signs of strain began to appear when Julio kept making jokes that Tarquin considered "too chaotic." :smallcool:

Something tells me Scoundrel is a nickname, not a surname =)
However, we may very well see Julio's father in prequel - some sort of respectable lawyer with last name "Scoundrel" =)

Julio née Juliana, used to be Elan's Mommy.

After a tumultous partnership as rogue swordsmen, Tarquin tricked Julio into wearing a cursed girdle of femininity, forced him to marry Tarq, and knocked him up with twins.

Later, after Elan grew up, Julio uncursed and removed the girdle. Scoundrél finally returned to the form he always planned on resuming (even to the point of keeping photos) once his maternal responsibilities were fulfilled.

Still, there was the matter of looking after the training of his adult son, so Julio took his airship to Cliffport and helped Elan without revealing his true maternity.

This would be outright stupid, if it wasn't so plausible in DnD-ish OotSverse...

note that julio calss tarquin "general tarquin" so i'm guessing it's after he became a (self proclaimed or not) general. (i just woke up. can't speculate beyond obvious.)

My guess is they were sworn foes from the moment they met on the maternity ward.

But it's obvious! Very few men in the strip wear V-necked clothes. Dorukan (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0276.html) and Julio are the only such people. Clearly they must be brothers. Tarquin met Dorukan when he did some private research on Xykon and the gates Nale told him about (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0821.html), and Dorukan introduced him to his brother Julio.

Tarquin, not Julio, is Elan's true mother. She donned the Girdle of Feminity/Masculinity after understanding that, due to the influence of Patriarchy on the tradition of dramatic conventions, she would had a greater chance at becoming a legendary villiain as a male character.

Julio, who of course is the Twins true father, managed to snatch Elan from Tarquinia. But being the CN adventurer he is, he couldn't commit to raising a child, and handed him over to the first barmaid he meet, who became Elan's putative mother.

All the "divorce" thing was made up to fool the audience. Julio has never told anyone about the true nature of Tarquinia's gendre as he understands that would ruin the Great Reveal which will invariably happen at the relevant time.

He has attempted to "rescue" Nale from Tarquinia's clutches many times, trough. Hence their long story of rivalry and clashes together.

They just met. Pretending they have a long-lasting feud makes the whole thing way more dramatically.
