Confusion on Dog hengeyokai and scent?

So question , dog hengeyokai gets a +4 on wilderness checks when using scent.

hengeyokai don't get the abilities of the animals they assume, I had thought, so hengeyokai dog's get a bonus to an ability they dont have?
