Has anyone else noticed that the Order seems to be developing a notable collection of pets? First we had Blackwing, then we picked up Mr. Scruffy after the Battle Of Azure City, now we've added Bloodfeast The Extreme-inator to the list. Where is this going?

They're gonna need an army to fight Xykon.

Well, Durkon can summon a variety of animals and vermin as a vampire power. He can also create his own vampire spawn or true vampire thralls, as well as casting Dominate Person at will, so he has plenty of capacity to "recruit" new "pets" in a morally-questionable-at-best fashion.

Bloodfeast the Extreme-inator. Watch yourself, Belkar has force-fed people their own intestines for a lot less.

And lets not forget Roy's bag of tricks, maybe we haven't seem the last of beaver, rat, other rat and rhino.

Actually, he fed the guard Eviceratus's intestins.

Do you seriously believe that Belkar has never force-fed someone their own intestines before?

Summons don't count, they're not permanent. Also, by "pets" I meant non-sentient animals, not humanoids.

That seems like an unnecessarily restrictive menagerie.

In all seriousness, I was joking before. Durkon's the only member of the group who has follower-related abilities that he hasn't used yet, though (unless you count V knowing Dominate Person, as well, but it's not quite as useful if you actually have to prepare slots for it).

I not only expect he did it, but also that he was totally blindsided when they got mad at him for it.

Was he blindsided by the fact they were still alive after he forcefed them their own intestines? That would blindside me.

Sooner or later that thing will disgorge a Sharktopus and then it will all be worthwhile.

Speaking of which, slightly off topic, did we ever see what was O-Chul's mount?

No, but keep in mind that Paladin's don't get their mounts until Level 5. We know he was a Fighter for years, so he could have been something like Fighter 10/Paladin 4. That puts him right just below the Order in terms of power.

Roy: Bag of Tricks Animals
Vaarsuvius: Blackwing
Belkar: Mr. Scruffy and Bloodfeast the Extremeinator
Durkon: Bat!Durkon and Wolves/Bats
Elan: Can learn Summoning magic
Haley: Throw Money at people?

Well, they took offense long before the process was complete. Besides, this is OOTS, where people shake off being gored by a dinosaur.

But!

Only one person so far has shaken off being gored by a dinosaur.

And that one person did not shake off falling 300ft from the back of a zombie dragon. So even he had his limits....

Haley, Belkar and Roy could have also received a few fleas from Ian in the prison.

The Order has picked up (and lost) a collection of animals, mounts, animal companions and one familiar over the course of the strip.

First, and foremost, is Blackwing (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0003.html) who popped up (rather literally!) in strip #3 to give V the benefits of the Alertness feat. (Alas this meagre +2 bonus was not enough for V to notice Xykon's Goblin Ninjas.)

Next, Belkar somehow acquired a Goat with the Minimal template (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0081.html), which he sacrificed to Banjo.

After discovering he hadn't earned enough XP to level, Belkar stabbed a "poor little rat" (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0124.html), which did not even give Belkar a single Experience Point, since it was too low of a CR.

Roy drew the shortest straw (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0130.html), and ended up with the Bag of Tricks the party recovered in the dungeon. The Bag of Tricks has conjured the following:

A cat (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0163.html)
A beaver (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0165.html)
A rat (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0165.html)
Another rat (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0165.html)
A weasel (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0144.html)
A badger (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0146.html)
A rhinocerous, though only for comic relief purposes (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0167.html)

Before leaving town to head into Wooden Forest to recover the starmetal to reforge Roy's ancestral greatsword, Roy bought mounts for the entire party (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0140.html):

Four horses
One pony
One dauschund
Yes, it's called a dauschund, not a "weiner dog"
Stop calling it a "weiner dog"!

Haley chose to call her horse "Whisper", while Roy chose to call his "Silver". V had difficulty getting her horse back from a Half-Orc parking attendent, because she had lost her ticket. All of the mounts, save Durkon's pony (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0251.html), were abandoned at the inn when they were defeated by Miko and dragged in chains to Azure City (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0321.html).

Belkar found Mr. Scruffy inside a Hobgoblin granary (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0516.html), during the Resistance's mission to liberate slaves and steal food. Having Mr. Scruffy gave Belkar a Circumstance bonus to his Disguise check to impersonate Lord Shojo. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0524.html) Mr. Scruffy's presence convinced the warring factions of Azurites to join the Resistance under Thanh's leadership (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0533.html); they let Belkar keep Mr. Scruffy since they wanted to get rid of Haley and Belkar. Mr. Scruffy is for all intents and purposes Belkar's Animal Companion (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/classes/ranger.htm#animalCompanion). That makes him even deadlier against Commoners than a regular house cat!

Vaarsuvius acquired three tropical birds (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0554.html) to use in her spell Vaarsuvius' Animal Messenger. While the spell worked, Haley shot the birds down and Belkar cooked them (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0563.html), since they hadn't eaten meat in days.

After learning of the Ancient Black Dragon's plan to murder and bind the souls of V's children, V accepted Qarr into her service (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0630.html). Imps (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/devil.htm#imp) can assume the form of a boar, among other animals, and given that he acts like pig, I'm including Qarr on this list. :smallyuk:

V cast Charm Monster on a Purple Worm (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0689.html), which the Order rode to where they thought Girard's Gate was (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0690.html).

BLOODFEAST THE EXTREME-INATOR! (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0778.html)

BLOODFEAST THE EXTREME-INATOR! (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0784.html)

In that case your whole thread pretty much disappears up its own overly-restrictive definition, because Blackwing is definitely sentient and there's a good chance Mr Scruffy is too. Which leaves the count at: 1. Which is not so much a menagerie as a mascot, really.

But I look forward to seeing how Belkar tricks Xykon into casting Break Enchantment on that lizard...

Um, I think I just listed every single animal the Order's ever used as a mount, animal companion, distraction or familiar. It's pretty long.

So ... did Belkar just gain a second animal companion? I'm not aware of any way for rangers to have more than one at a time, and as much as I would dearly love for BLOODFEAST THE EXTREME-INATOR to become a recurring character, I like Mr. Scruffy more.

Belkar is using Wild Empathy to control BLOODFEAST THE EXTREME-INATOR. Mr. Scruffy is Belkar's Animal Companion.

In D&D 3.5 Druids and Rangers can only have one Animal Companion at a time.

I think there's a feat that allows for an additional animal companion, but don't have access to my game library to check.
