[PF] How do you keep an animal companion with you?

I don't know if I'm missing something or if my campaign is atypical, but I'm having a problem.

Sometimes my animal companion can't follow me because I need to move stealthy, or because I go through a narrow passage, or because of terrain or because of not having enough spells for it (share spells no longer really share spells). A paladin may magically call her horse to her side at the end of the gnome-sized tunnel, but a ranger cannot.

Solutions?
